Because Episode 48 was the end of the original 4 cour season and the second wasn't green lit early enough for episode 49 to be ready.

Think the anime did a better job making me feel some sympathy for Laxus. It's just weird overall considering how far he went during this incident. You got to love Igneel who really has one heck of a temper when pushed.

I don't mind buffer/filler episodes, really, as long as they don't go too far off the material and they don't take up 100+ episodes (I'm looking at you, Naruto).

they aren't filler, or at least none of them are except possibly the "Special Mission" one

Yeah, I wouldn't call them filler necessarily, just non-arc episodes in between the major stories. Same classification as Loke's little mini-arc (which was two episodes I believe?)

The special mission one adapts one of the bonus chapters. So it's all non-filler in the sense that it all adapts something done by Mashima. On the other hand, for two of the episodes it's going to require some reframing on the part of the anime staff, somewhat similar to what episode 20 required.

If you're curious as to what episode title corresponds to what chapter for these episodes:

Spoiler for Title's source chapter numbers:

In case anyone is wondering the "Miss Fairy Tail Contest" was actually held in real life when it happened in the manga.

They asked readers to send in post cards with their vote, tallied them up, and then 2 volumes later he made the results public in this chapter.

So the ranking Erza->Lucy->Juvia is actually based on the fan feedback when it came out in the manga. (I don't know what he would have done if Lucy had won... he probably had something planned where she wouldn't get the money anyway ).

Anyway, Wild Mass Guessing time: The dragons are in the spirit world. Natsu was able to pass through with Virgo, which Lucy thought was impossible. Natsu and Gadjeel couldn't leave the guild when Fried put his "no one over 80 can leave" barrier up. Thus, I think the dragons left some of their essence in their protoge's, which triggered the "over 80" clause, and also will let them go to the spirit world to find the dragons eventually. Lucy will probably be key to getting them there.

/end Wild Mass Guessing

Episode 49:

OP: Spoilers, many spoilers. Most of the surprises of this arc were revealed.

The episode was a combination of 2 fillers and the manga plothole was avoided.

Also, wendy appearing constantly in the town, which doesn't make much sense.
And which was lucy fateful encounter?. It was wendy or natsu?. I don't think it was wendy, but the episode made it look like that.

It doesn't make much sense, the cana said fateful (unlucky), why was lucy so happy about it?.

Next episode will be a filler again.

"unmei" (fated) doesn't have a bad meaning in Japanese in this context.

The translation of "Fateful Encounter" was somewhat forced on me to match what was written on that book... In english that doesn't necessarily have a bad meaning, but it's not as positive as in the Japanese.

only half of it was a manga special filler

the reporter part was in the actual story, it was just skipped before. it took place before the fairy festival arc.

and yea it seems the fated reunion was this blue haired girl, which they decided to randomly have be shopping in town all episode for no reason than to hint at future.

Why do manga readers, who read the manga and thus already know whats going to happen, worry about spoilers in the opening?
