Sad, depressing drama

So, I've just finished watching Asatte no Houkou yesterday, and right now I am pretty much overwhelmed by the serious drama in the anime. I'm wondering if there are any more anime out there that has a depressing and dramatic plot (can also have romance and some fantasy thrown in). I've already watched all the Key-adapted anime out there, True Tears, Kiminozo, Kashimashi, and what else that's close.

Wolf's Rain is rather sad, and depressing. Also a great anime. Quite a bit into the magic.
Hanbun no Tsuki I found sad too, though not really depressing. Sweet-sad romance.

Clannad/After story should be pretty dramatic...I think.

Same here. Some of the people in here need to pay closer attention to the OP's posts. ;>

Now and Then, Here and There is a damn depressing little series. Bokura ga Ita, while not ridiculously depressing, will still hit you hard at times. It's a lovely little portrayal of young love and the trouble that comes with it. Nana is sort of similar to BGI; it's very realistic and focuses a lot on the choices the main characters make in their lives. Personally, no series has hit me harder than Toward the Terra; it puts a lot of emphasis on the characters and their relationships, and the series itself is beautifully done and, of course, depressing like whoa. I found Texhnolyze sad (or maybe just brutal?) too, but it lacked the impact of those other series, imho.

If you don't mind films, you can't go wrong with 5 Centimeters Per Second, Grave of the Fireflies or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. 5 Cm/Sec and Girl will make you reflect on the impact time can have on relationships, and Grave is a hideously sad WWII drama.

I suppose I'll give Bokura ga Ita and Texhnolyze a try since those two seems interesting, thanks!

Texhnolyze is a real slow-burner though, first episode is even without dialogue. It works for me as I find Hamazaki's direction particularly engaging and emotional in a very understated sort of way. It is a depressing watch, to the point that it felt like someone was constantly punching me in the gut, but not as fatalistic as it may initially appear.

As for reccomendations, have you watched Ayakashi Horror Tales' Goblin Cat? Amazing artwork and nuances to the characters, it's a prequel to Mononoke, which is nothing short of impressive as well.

Hah. It wouldn't be me if I didn't second Texhnolyze and Now and then, Here and There. But there you go. ^^

You should watch Grave of the Fireflies, depressing like hell.It is not a series but a movie.

Casshern Sins ( they always talk about death)
HanTsuki
Jigoku Shoujo(Ppl going to hell, you don't call that not depressing but sometimes they deserve it)
Shigofumi
Shin Hakkenden ( An old anime, I doubt you can find it. I watched when it aired on AXN)
Ayashi no Ceres
Soukyuu no Fafner
Natsume Yuujinchou ( Some episodes are quite touching)

That is true. But his comment was like what ticked me off enough to comment it. I mean, before I posted that, I browsed through like 5-6 suggestions threads, and it would seem that in each of them people only read the topic title, and then post. They don't read the posts.

Ps. I didn't know it's #88th biggest company either ^^.

Welcome to the NHK! is a good choice. One of the few animes that I could truly be connected to the main character's feelings in life. It was quite depressing because it was so true.

How has Honey and Clover not been said yet? "Depressing and dramatic plot that can also have romance" pretty much defines it.

Though it can be rather uplifting in the end, which is nice.
