Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the crow or its associates are responsible for destroying Rei's world.

I just watched Episode 5 of this. Wonderful episode. It was probably a good idea to only show brief glimpses of Vivid Heroine vs. Alone fights this episode. The change of pace is good for this particular episode, and it allows the more disturbing feel caused by the focus on Rei to shine through well.

Rei, I think, is a cross between Homura and Fate Testarossa. Rei's appearance, mannerisms, and combat style is much more Homura-esque, but Rei's motivations and place in the narrative is more Fate-esque.

I'm 95% sure that Rei is being duped. The Crow is crudely manipulating her just as Fate was crudely manipulated by Precia. Rei is "fighting for her parents", while Fate "fought for her mother". It's very sympathetic, but it doesn't mean that her cause is right in the bigger picture.

Why do i think that Rei is being duped? Here are my reasons:

1. Crow imagery is almost as ominous as it gets. Actual crows are scavengers. Perhaps that's saying something about the Alones...

2. I don't think this show will be as dark and deconstruction-y as Madoka was. The BGM and mood is too consistently upbeat.

My 5% doubt here is for two reasons:

1. There's always a chance a show could go in an unexpected direction.

2. I do have very slight misgivings about this world's setup. Don't get me wrong. Everybody's heart is in the right place, and it seems like a real utopia (or close to it) to me. But 90% of the entire world's energy supply being located in one place? It's not hard to see how that could backfire horribly.

I think that VRO cleverly takes inspiration from a lot of different sources (Nanoha, Madoka, PreCure, and Strike Witches) and blends them together in a way to give the show an overall distinctive feel while still paying a certain homage to these other properties. I very much like this approach.

Not to mention entire facilities needed to distribute that energy to the rest of the world, as we saw with Himawari's episode.

And yeah, while free energy around the whole world could definitely help things, that alone wouldn't end all conflict and war. Humans would just find new things to war over, sadly, and/or try to use that free energy for more advanced and powerful weaponry and whatnot...and then there's still corporations who would try to monopolize it, manipulate things, and so on...

Not to mention, even if the Engine can supply 95% of the world's demand for energy now, demand for power is always increasing. New sources will be needed in a few more years.
In fact, they should be building them already. 95% simply doesn't have enough margin to accomodate spikes in demand.

Well if the Engine is actually capable of producing infinite energy through some pseudo-scientific means, then the only bottleneck is the distribution.

The crow wants her to destroy Akane's world, supposedly to somehow restore Rei's own. Her objection when Rei saved the child makes that plain. There is no way that can be justified. I don't think Rei has actually thought about that yet. Even after this episode, I'm not sure she's quite been pushed far enough to really see what she's being made to do. She knows bits of it, but she is fighting very hard not to realize the truth, because she doesn't want to understand what she's doing. She doesn't want to risk thinking about anything that can distract her from her need to bring back all the people she loves, so she is struggling very hard not to think about what the cost might be.

I think this episode is highlighting that Rei is just that desperate to save her world. She's well aware of what she's doing and what it's causing judging by her reaction to the kids talking about their damaged house and she is trying as hard as she can not to think about it. She has morals and is clearly a good hearted person as she saved that kid but that just serves to further demonstrated how bad she wants what she's been promised.

The pain in her heart is clearly growing, her dialouge with Akane there when Rei found out that Akane experienced loss in her family due to death she broached the question of, "What would you do/sacrifice to get your loved ones back if you could?" However indirectly she phrased it, it's clearly on her mind.

Also, did anyone else find Rei's dialogue with her pet parakeet painfully cute? Seeing the mask fall away to reveal the lonely girl underneath.

What about Sailor Moon? That was at the back of my mind watching this episode considering it also has an introverted girl named Rei who fires arrows and talks to crows.

Wouldn't be surprised if the crow destroyed Rei's world and is using her. Felt a little bad for Rei, but she should listen to how Akane would do things.

I'm sure we're all sick of the PMMM comparisons, but that scene where the crow offers to grant Rei a way to change fate was a double-take inducing mirror of a specific contract scene in Madoka episode 10. From the context, to the way the bird materialized into existence, straight down to some of the camera angles used. I'd like to see a screenshot comparison, but there would be too many spoilers.

Having said that, I think the Nanoha comparisons others mentioned will prove to be more indicative of where things are going in the long run. Rei needs to take out a massive befriending insurance policy, pronto.

Also, bums. So many bums.

This show is rapidly becoming a huge homage to Nanoha, with Akane being the title character, Rei Fate and the crow Precia manipulating her. I think any similarities with Madoka are purely coincidental.

I'm expecting Rei to be 'befriended' before the end of the show. Probably when the real truth behind her world's destruction is made clear to her.

Also, what will happen to Rei if she keeps being 'disobedient'? Will she too be getting whipped into shape (either literally or figuratively), like Fate was? So far, the signs seem to point in that direction. And what is the true motivation of the crow – love, peace and happiness for all? I think it's more like pain, death and destruction.

I like Sakura Ayane's performance in this show. She's good at voicing these kinds of characters.
