I remember that. One documentary about the 1980s revealed that the country's ruler, Nicolae Ceaușescu, was hoping to use Dallas themes of greed and riches to show his people how corrupt and disgusting capitalism is so they would reject it and accept communism (and his dictatorial rule and forget his bad handling of the economy). Instead, they wanted the things they saw on the show and ask why couldn't they have great lives like the cast of Dallas.

http://wapo.st/2zawQHMNorth Korean shadow hangs over the Winter Olympics

Worries that the DPRK might disrupt the Olympics have suppressed ticket sales, with foreign countries expressing concerns about their athletes' safety. Past history is not reassuring:
Quote:
North Korea has made things difficult before for South Korea ahead of sporting events. A year before the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, North Korean agents bombed a Korean Air flight, killing everyone on board. And during the 2002 World Cup, a North Korean warship opened fire on a South Korean patrol boat, leaving six soldiers dead.

They didn't want to give away that their sword arms are good enough to throw one into a missile that high up.

And their Gundam, magical girls, and Yamato are reserved for alien invader types and true end of the world scenarios.

Japan should simply bring back Koizumi and then wreck other countries trough mahjong, and then fight nazi on the moon.

what the hell this guy is doing in japan??? trump want to start another "china x japan war???, serious why japanese prime minister accepted the "human" walking joke in his country specially when trump popularity in japan is so low and after the "samurai missile" he keep doing his "trump things" now in "asia" and bring more "laughts" around where he pass.

well he is really a "com" men.

situation in Asia already pretty bad with NK and trump doing his "trump things" on Asia can make things even worst.

Contrary to anime, Samurai can't jump that high.

What he should have asked is ask why Japan didn't deploy mecha to stop it.

One way to explain this is the US is trying to provoke Japan into raising tensions with North Korea
eventually a conflict will start with Japan and the US can declare war on North Korea,
thus, bypassing China's "If you attack first, we attack you" clause

This situation just makes me cry.

This North Korean soldier who was able to escape from North Korea in that condition, it is definitely not normal.
Just how was this soldier in that condition able to came out of North Korea barely alive?

And this internal dispute over what is right and wrong situation is just too ridiculous.
I'm way more disappointed in South Korea than the North Korea.

Not entirely related, but as a partial consequence of the situation the US Navy is stretched too thin it seems.

The British would probably just think its cute to have that problem, seeing as they had as much water to patrol, but more territory to defend. With more ships. Only a hundred year ago.

NK is saying, "Hey, you've threatening us with fire and fury and how you're totally going to destroy North Korea all over the media. Guess what, If you attack us, we nuke your assets"

but how things will be interpreted will unfortunately be "OMG WE MUST DESTROY NORTH KOREA NOW"
I'm pretty sure that was not the intent of NK, but that's how it's going to be.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-n...-idUSKCN1BQ1LP

let's hope this saber rattling doesn't become catastrophic

Edit: https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-no...-idUKKBN1DV3F3

It seems the other Korea is also daring NK to escalate things.

You've probably heard the good news by now.
The Koreas are planning to officially put an end to their cold civil war

I have to admit that Trump was a factor.
either by being the first president to ever accept an invitation by North Korea
or by being an existential threat that accelerated these talks

I'm glad this didn't escalate to war

Now if only Palestine and Israel....

Ah, turns out Kim Jong Un isn't completely suicidal.

Good for the rest of us.

The question will be the aftermath and the less fortifed border.

When I think of Trump accepting the invitation, I can't do otherwise but think of the times when Barack Obama was crucified for just letting out the prospect of holding talks with North Korea even though the whole process with the Iran nuclear deal was spectacular in itself.

As for the option of Trump being an existential threat, I don't know. Any other president would have ordered the 7th Fleet and B-2 bombers to go in the area from the very moment Kim comes close of going too far. I don't see what is different here.

I'm just baffled that we don't have more concrete information as to why Kim suddenly changed his policy within months.

It might be because his testing site collapsed. Oops.

ah yes. The military industrial complex

"While stock markets in Asia are breathing a sigh of relief after North and South Korea’s leaders shared a friendly handshake and vowed to work toward wiping away nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula Friday, once high-flying defense stocks are taking the hit."
