is there anime where the fight is done in strategical way?

in a tactical sense a "smart" battle? so instead of the usual brute/power up/friendship, its terrain advantage, knowing weakness, correct tool/utility/weapon, stuff like that.

the logic/reason doesn't need to be make sense, as long the tactic is there (you cant demand a lot in anime after all)

so far i only got...
- grancrest senki - not bad but the pacing is amazingly fast.
- arslan senki - kind of like grancrest so its okay i guess.
- aldnoah zero - plot aside, i actually enjoy the battle a lot.
- log horizon - the MC is the brain of the series, nuff said.

anything else?

So you haven't watched Code Geass? Every time Lulu starts a fight he's already won. He's so far ahead of his enemies, that one time he even recorded himself on tape talking to an opponent and fooled that guy into thinking that it was a live conversation.

Why is there no one mentioning "Death Note" ?! that's the epitome of "smart" MC, though the battle is more of "duel of mind" rather in battleground...

and (maybe) for the others :
- Madan no Ou to Vanadis
- Nejimaki Seirei no Alderamin
- Rokka no Yuusha
- Oda Nobuna no Yabou,
can be considered too, yeah?

The currently-airing Anglomois about the Mongol invasion of Japan has some of this. A small band of Japanese are trying to fend off the occupation of Tsushima Island between Korea and Japan while awaiting reinforcements.

Utawarerumono comes to mind. Also, though some have argued about the validity of the strategies, the new series The Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of the Einherjar should fit well.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Sengoku Musou - kinda fits. There are moments, where brute power is used to overcome enemies, but there are also moments, where show goes very deep into strategy used.
Shinshaku Sengoku Eiyuu Densetsu: Sanada Juu Yuushi special - overlaps with Sengoku Musou (entire special covers one of the battles also shown in SM). Goes even more into strategy.
Second season of Kingdom (they go more into warfare stuff there)
Berserk (both TV series and movie trlogy fits).
Nobunaga no Shinobi, while being a comedy, still goes into quite a lot of details about strategies used in battles.

No. New series is a new adaptation of the books. Though I would recommend watching an old series anyway. There’s really no guarantee that new adaptation will complete the story, since first season hasn’t even covered the first book.

I'd like to point out that this can be interpreted in two distinct ways.

1) Skilled/technical fighting where the characters fight directly with their opponents in largely technical ways like an MMA/Boxing match. A lot of focus is given on how the fighter will counter the other persons ability or the mind games that they may play with each other when it gets a bit non-conventional/guerrilla-esque. Examples of these would be:
  • Hunter x Hunter (Takes a while to get into it though)
  • Baby Steps (It's actually a sports anime. I only include it because these tennis matches get real intricate and sophisticated yet thrilling like an action fight)
  • Fullmetal Panic
  • Katanagatari
  • Parasyte
  • Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
  • Assassination Classroom
  • Btooom!
  • Raildex franchise (it has its ups and downs)
  • Aldnoah.Zero

The above list is in order of how well I think this particular element is done. Not saying Aldnoah.Zero is bad but I do like how the others do it more.

2) The Strategist - Basically where the focus is on a character who may or may not stay out of direct fighting but largely decides battles through troop tactics and chess like strategy.
  • Death Note
  • Code Geass (It's hammy as hell but I did like it)
  • Legend of Arslan
  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes (same writer as above)
  • Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (technically a mix of both but I classify it more as this one)
  • Space Ship Yamato 2199
  • The Saga of Tanya the Evil

These aren't in any particular order because I've never been wow'd by this trope except with Death Note.

^i just finish baby step and i really like it. Its the sort of “battle” i want.

I did watch the raildex but it got... how do i say it.. monotone? After a while the main guy just do exactly the same thing over and over, one punch the enemy and thats it the next thing i know the enemy suddenly become good person.

Its not bad, i actually watch the entire thing and i found myself interested but after a while i just skim through the fight part and actually more engrossed on the drama part

There is World Trigger as well, all the fight are tactical by nature, though it is in Hiatus

I agree with that sentiment 100%. I guess I'm just a little partial to it because I really loved the arcs in the beginning before it started getting repetitive.

I guess Yugioh but...

Also, Hunter x Hunter but there seems to be a system. Togashi provides multiple rules to a fight, encounter or anything. However, once a certain character has revealed all of his rules, we might never see a fight anymore because another battle would be repetetive. Even if he returns, the character might pull something out of nowhere. Kurapica and Hisoka might be two of these examples.
