I've got to ask something. Why is this show so popular? It's not the worst or anything, but it sure sells and gets talked about a lot for a mostly generic harem series that doesn't do anything all that different.

Why? No love for Ichika? For the love of God he's at least 3-times more badass than average harem hero (bar exceptions, like Tenchi) that ALSO doubles as generic Shonen action hero, hey, 2 product for a single price.

Yeah, but Strike Witches originated from a generation I'm not familiar with, so I could let that slide. This series is good for what it is, but around the 2010-11 time frame, it's not like it's giving anything the audience didn't know it wanted like most of the other popular series on this forum.

Yeah, I.S. is rather generic, but unlike average harem it has POTENTIAL to speak of. War, Politics, Romance. The readers/ viewer has rather large expectation from this series, its seems.

Notice how wildly different one fanfic to another (except the common theme of OC male pilots or quirky author-stand in secret agents)...and those ramblings in the Fanfic Discussion thread alternate between crazy boarding high school antics, romance fluff and tragic war story. This, despite there's few fic out there.

This say something about POTENTIAL that only mainstream Shonen could have, bear in mind, Infinite Stratos is NOT one, it's still a cult-followed works aimed at harem-themed market.

As you said (probably I'm misunderstand) either because of Market, editor, author's, or less likely, fandom, they wasted a perfectly serious plot material in favor of upping the harem antics AGAIN recently.

...the fans was disappointed, but they still didn't lost their hope.

I admit, I did think that the fact that women became more powerful than men thanks to the I.S. was an interesting plotline, but it wasn't fleshed out enough.

As for what I meant, for the most part, popular series deliver the audience's expectations, but they also deliver something unexpected. Madoka Magica did this. Durarara almost did this. Infinite Stratos didn't really make much of an attempt to stand out amongst other series like it besides combining females in mecha with harem. I don't think it's a bad show, but at the same time, it's not a good show.

Basically, it all comes down to the fact that I can't really see how it achieved its cult status. I guess I'll just have to accept that it's something I'm missing.

Ranked third in Japan's Light Novel sales for a 'generic' harem novel = cult.

By cult following, I mean in it's original place, in Japan. We talked about light novel, had yet to leave Japan (it reached Chinese actually, but stopped by author himself).

Then again, it's a matter of personal opinion.
