(That sig...!!!) So I got a mindburst of inspiration and did a small wiki article about Audacious Space Traders... Meet the Crest Eagle and her crew. Guess this infodump should satisfy those dying for details.

Spoiler:
edit When the 1st PV (with Black Holy) was shown, the Japanese said it was lame. After "Mugen no Ai" was introduced, their reaction was like "Hurr, give us angela" and "Black Holy was better" (angela was the group who did Stelvia's OP and ED). Of course, when the full version of Black Holy is played, Marika's fans wanted the song to be the OP. For me, they go like this: Black Holy = Lost Child > Mugen no Ai

Hakuchou
I just had a thought... What we have in this storyline is the idea of privateers or licenced pirates. We have backstory about the Hakuchou, the seven original ships operating under Letters of Marque.
Japanese storytelling is replete with tales of masterless ronin, samurai who call no man lord living in a world where they are effectively "beyond the pale" although they still possess some rank and status. You could consider the privateers of the Mo-retsu universe as effectively being space ronin. And there are seven of them. Hmmm, where have I seen that plot before?

Mobirates 07 - Let's Make a Show Of It
So even the space battles can be mock shows. Pirating, at this point, really does seem to be far more about entertaining people, which I don't really have a problem with. Marika's proving herself to be not wholly perfect either, which is something that was missing from the previous episodes. Part time jobs can be a strain, especially if that job involves a fancy jacket and hat like hers. Of course, it wouldn't be pirates without royalty getting involved. Still, for an episode that looked to spell the end of things, it continued on with largely the same tone from the last one. Now next week, that's where the die is cast. |

I'll type more on this episode later, but I did enjoy it. Chiaki-chan is so adorably tsundere in this episode. Yeah, nobody's buying the "I-It's Not like I came all this way to see you" denial. |

Interesting change to the opening narration this week. It really felt something out of one of those Super Robot series "Fight Kato Marika" and all that. Well at least in her dream, Marika didn't say "Release the Gunda*s"
I liked how Marika's biggest struggle right now is finding the right balance between her job as a space privateer captain(entertainers in space and reserve military officers) and being a high school student. I would like to see some followup to this in future episodes as her dual life could produce some conflict that would grow her character. I mean, that was part of the whole plot of Spiderman 2 after all. I appriciate that they're giving Mami some more screentime as Marika's non-privateer involved friend and the one who tries to keep her mind on her schoolwork. I can see how being a meido/waitress at the Lamp Cafe is soothing to Marika, but she also needs to find some time for her schoolwork too. Mami also seems to be able to see through Chiaki's feelings(although it is fairly obvious to us that Dark Queen Chiaki wants some of the Captain's booty. ) Nice moment of comedy too with Mami dropping her soft-serve ice cream. In this world-building front, "Blaster" Ririka looks like she's a kind of air traffic controller person at the airport. I guess she goes for the high-stress jobs doesn't she? I'm also guessing that the Corback-class ships get to get in some wargames practice in addition to whatever monies the shipping company gave it as part of the "pirating package". I certainly saw the Bentenmaru versus the Corback ships designated as "Alpha, Bravo and Charlie"(first three letters of the U.S military alphabet) as two military units doing a friendly wargame. Obviously, when there isn't a war, you have to find some way to keep the military busy. LOL at all the obstacles Marika has to dodge in order to make it to the bridge in that costume. I bet that she gets better at it over time. Next episode looks to be interesting with a child princess(34 kg is around 70 lbs I think. So Loli princess is around 11-12?) negoiating with Marika. Hopefully we'll learn some things about how the royal family figures into all of this with the Galactic Empire and all. I wouldn't be surprised if that academy was a place that trained future military officers and all that. It could very well be the Sea of the Morningstar's equivalent to Eton, where the Duke of Wellington(Arthur Wellesley) was taught military strategy and all. We know that Jenny is the daughter of a interstellar shipping magnate and these girls seem to have some interesting backstories too. On the Star Trek front, I think we'll know who our McCoy is if Misa or Mami says "He's dead, Marika." |

This episode rather confirms that the majority of "piracy" basically consists of putting on shows for paying clients. Just another form of entertainment for the customers on board a space-liner. For a moment there, I thought the escort squadron had a burr up its butt about its professional pride and was going to genuinely try to shoot it out, but no such luck. (I will say, I would have liked to see Marika stare at Misa and basically tell her where to shove all her "dragging me around like a rag doll" crap, on the grounds of "Exactly what the hell is so important about being a glorified in-flight movie that you're taking so much time out of my life that I'm flunking out of high school?" Mind you, that would be completely OOC for Marika. Chiaki, maybe. On the other hand, if the Bentenmaru isn't out there privateering, that crew isn't getting paid, and if space pirates are anything like historical pirates were, not a damn one of 'em has bothered to set up a 401(k) or a decent nest egg for financial security. Which is probably why they're out in space a heck of a lot more often than one job every 50 days until Marika graduates (which would only be seven acts of piracy a year). It's very annoying that the past two episodes have basically taken away what was one of the best aspects of the first five: the fact that nobody was shoving the whole pirate-captain job down Marika's throat but letting her make up her own mind.) ...Of course, next episode could change all that. Hints of real plot, perhaps? That princess looks like she might be the girl with the Sailor Moon hair in the opening credits... Oh, one thing I genuinely disliked: Spoiler for The worst thing about the whole series thus far!:

I wonder where is the sample of Black Holy. Would be useful for my own fic. EDIT: Found it. Too bad the lyrics don't fit... But I wonder what this angela song were the Japanese asking for.

Things got interested with that princess onboard. Based on the preview it seems that she force her to go to school with Marika as some sort of bargain agreement to whatever it is.
Marika with that makeup was a bit over the top. This is slowly becoming my favorite show of the season. |

So Marika is having a hard time balancing school and pirating. What was up with her makeup, she really needs to fix that. Like how its an obstacle course from her room to the bridge. So Chiaki made a visit, but Marika was away. Wow how bad are they if they allow a stowaway.

I believe she did hide in a create you can't check every piece of cargo you know...
Anyway it seems that our young captain is still a little scared when it comes to actual combat not wanting have to kill and all maybe with time she'll get over the idea.

(Honestly, I can't shake the idea that if you gave Jenny and the Yacht Club five years' worth of training and real-world experience, they'd take the Bentenmaru's crew out behind the barn for an old-fashioned whipping in any direct confrontation.)

What is with **** Subs calling the Bentenmaru the Bicentary? What the heck? That is just plain outright bad subbing.
