Well I've been a fan of both for ages (it seems) and I'm approaching 2199 as an entirely new version of the original series.
So I'm open to anything that Izubuchi wants to add, change, improve, or keep the same.

I'm just totally jazzed that Yamato is getting a retelling.

I've always loved the musical score of the original, and I'm glad that 2199 is staying mostly true to the original music.

They should do a special "DVD/Bluray only" filler episode where Analyzer gets a strange virus that oddly changes his personality to the one in the original series and _crazy nostalgic antics_ ensue (in a non-cannon way).

I've not been listening to the Yamato Radio show/drama (YRA) but it is hosted by the actress that does Yuria and the actor that does Analyzer. So there is no telling what that robot does on the air.

The first 9 minutes of "Desperate Struggle in the Heliosphere" are now available at Bandai Channel. For those unable to watch it due to the site country/IP lock, here's the lowdown.
Contains SPOILERS

Spoiler for Episode 3, 9 Minute Preview:

The episode opens with the Yamato leaving the atmosphere. As Shima retracts the wings, Yuki spots a signal in the radar screen. Kodai uses his binoculars to get a visual. It's the Kirishima. As the Yamato passes her, Hijikata, Yamanami and the rest of their crew salute the Yamato. Okita salutes back from his quarters. (All the while the Kirishima signals a message wich his read allowd by Aihara). The main engine fires and the Yamato speeds away.
Okita uses the PA to call the main staff to a meating to discuss the upcoming warp maneuvre.

A Gamilas spy plane (much like the one in episode 1) is hidden behind the moon and relaying images of the Yamato to Pluto where they're watched by a baffled Schulz and Ganz.

1- We get to see Shulz and Ganz out of the shadows and i'm glad to report that visual upgrade non-widstanding, Shulz looks as scheemy as ever.

2- The Gamilas seem to have taken an intensive course in Japanese since they are now all talking not in Gamilasian but crisp Nihongo XD )

In the Yamato the main staff is in the conference room (?) going over teir next step. The floor panel shows a beautiful zoom out from Earth, showing several tactical reference grids until the Milky Way is in full view and then a zoom in to the Great Magelanic Cloud and Iscandar. Captain Okita talks about the long distance they have to travel wich leads to Sanada presenting the concet behind the Yamato's Warp system, including the consequence of an error in timing. This leads to Niimi introducing herself and projecting the schematics for the Wave Motion Gun (i get the feeling that the WMG initial function was to act as an energy release valve in case of miss-warping (???), there is also the mention of a mini black-hole involved in the process), with mixed reactions from the crew. Yuki seems especially shocked. They then set out to prepare for the warp test and disband, leaving only Yuki and Kodai behind. Yuki looks sadly at the image of Mars in the screen and mentions Sasha (or Sasha's grave) to a surprised Kodai. The frame disolves into an image of the Yamato passing one of Mars moons and setting into orbit. As Kodai looks to Mars from the starboard observation deck (i believe he actually prays to Sasha to look upon them in their long voyage), Yuki goes out of an air-lock with a bouquet of flowers. (For something that got so much debate about who the "mysterious" person might be, the episode dispatches that quite quickly). Okita also gazes upon Mars from his quarters. Kodai suddenly realizes he is not alone. Yamamoto is there too looking upon her home world. The camera pans from Sasha's grave up into the skies where the distant silhouette of the Yamato ignites its engine. The Yamato flies off leaving a lonely bouquet floating in space. -fade to black-

In the engine room, Tokugawa and Yabu are looking at the engine schematics (Tokugawa wearing glasses

) and look upon the massive spining flywheel. In the bridge Shima and Ota are busy prepping for warp. (Note: Everyone on board is now wearing space suits. And yes, Captain Okita has taken his hat off. XD ) Tokugawa gives the go ahead and the engine fires, shifting from an orange "exhaust" to blue. The ship roars forward, accelerating and shaking. Ahead of the Yamato a ball of light like a new star appears.
Cut to Dr. Sado in his office. Drinking. Heavily. XDDD While his nurse covers her ears (whther not to ear him or because of all the rattling is unknown). The shaking makes him loose his balance and keel over. Cut to the fighter pilots room where, while his squadron is seated and buckled in, Kato is standing defiantly in the middle of the room, throwing darts (badly, i might add). The pilots look at him in disbelief... at his lack of skill.
On the bridge, Yuki begins the countdown and the Yamato breaks the dimensional barier. Kato throws another dart just as time itself seems to come to a screaching halt. The Yamato punches through time and space and after a blinding flash of light... only the vastness of space is left. In a dimension filled with streams of light, the Yamato looks as if it is sinking in a vast ocean. Inside Kato and his pilots are suspended in time looking at the dart that hans in mid-air. Dr. Sado is also frozen in time as he lunges towards his sake. Whole sections of the ship seem to vanish momentarily (as well as Yuki's clothes XD ). Eventualy the Yamato hits a reflection of itself and as it does, another flash of light and, as an ice covered Yamato emerges to normal space... Kato's dart hits the bullseye. Time flows again.

On the bridge Shima and Kodai raise their heads only to be startled by the unexpected sight of Jupiter looming over them. Caught in its massive gravity well the Yamato drifts out of control towards the atmosphere. Shima tries to regain control but his helm refuses to respond. Tokugawa reports. The engine releases plumes of steam (overheated, i guess) They manage to engage the auxiliary engines but it's not enough to escape. Just then, Yuki picks up a massive signal bellow them, inside the clouds. The captain orders the main video panel to switch to (undifined spectral vision! XD ) revealing a gigantic object aproaching them rapidly. The crew look in disbelief.

Fade to black.

Hmm. (blasted region locks).

Sounds interesting (Why wouldnt it...it is Yamato).

Likely someone will put it someplace were people other than the Japanese can see it as well. I mean it won't effect their sales on my account since I already bought the BD for this one about a month ago (and won't get it until probably July 30th).

Spoiler for Analysis:

Things moved fairly quickly. Yet it didn't seem quick.
You can see the remains of the explosion from the previous episode as Yamato finishes her roll to have Earth "above" the ship.
Yamato really moves out once it gets past Kirishima. The main engine puts out a lot of thrust it seems.
Didn't catch everything in the warp mission briefing. That they also brought up the Wave Motion Gun is interesting. What a "mini-black hole" has to do with it I don't know.
Kodai seems introspective for the first time in the series as they pass Mars.
The warp was slightly different than in the past. They seem to have mixed a few things together. It seems to take a bunch of space for them to accelerate to the Wormhole that I image they generated. The time stop effect seemed sort of like the one in the Wing Commander movie. That is somewhat different (maybe). That Kato wasn't strapped in didn't seem to effect him at all. (unlike the Marines from the second season that seem to go all over the place in Warp). The lead up to the Warp and the entry into warp seemed a bit like a mix of the effects from the Harlock SSX series/Yamato 2520 and newer Star Treks (with the star streaks and the sort of flash at the end).
The in Warp sequence was similar to the original one....trippy. The same music. The same vanishing of Yuki's clothing in stages (just from a more interesting angle). Just no random weirdness like flying over dinos or cavemen. They did live the Yamato encountering herself, but made that more effective my having that be the end of the line. The ice covering does make the old effect of the ship coming out white more logical (I suppose).

Mokoto was listening to music from a little MP3-ish like player (sort of like what Yuria was listening to on the bus in the previous episode) That she was nodding with the beat is interesting. Wonder what it was.

That Kodai is using binoculars to spot things is interesting. Guessing based on the number in his set that the Kirishima was about 82,000 km away. I'm guessing that is what the larger number on the left is as it has digits for up to the thousanths place, which would be meters. and all they would normally need to get targeting data for shells and the like.

I watched it. Could guess at a few things. Would rather know what is being asked and said, but it doesn't effect me much. Ono D. Isn't quite as much of a pretty boy as he was five or six years ago for those Haruhi events.

Yamamoto is now in her Cosmo Falcons uniform only.
And there are two additional Gamilas Empire persons added.

One a a large man with a strong chin and beard. Named Yaentry. He seems to be of the same race and ranking structure as Schultz and Gantz.

The other is a female. Named Cerestera. She has sort of light maybe white skin (vampire white) and purple hair. She has pointed, pronounced ears. She has a more traditional Gamilas officer's uniform (save the colors are different to match her skin rather that the usual green uniforms). She also has a cape, skirt, and thigh high boots.

There are possible spoilers if you have never seen the show in any form. Spoiler for Episode 3: Well there is the traditional shot of Kodai getting ready to fire the Wave Motion Gun. Analyzer in a fluid enviroment in what my guess would be in one of Jupiter's cloud layers...on the floating continent. Admiral Hijikata, Captain Yamamani, and the crew of the Kirishima giving Admiral Okita and Yamato a proper sendoff (and you can see the windows on the other side of the bridge, so they were polite enough not to turn the ship's guns at Yamato). Then there is a show of a woman is a spacesuit likely tossing flowers at Mars. Now she's definately in a yellow suit, so this is most likely Yuki instead of Yamamoto. Gives another layer of suspicion that Yuki is the youngest Iscandarian sister. There is the three image spread of Yamato going into Warp with the new effects and styling. Also the one image of Yuki during the Warp...wonder how that will play out. Last time she was eventually naked. A group of four Gamilus warships floating just over the ground. A Heavy Crusier/battlecruiser and three destroyers. They are not ready for combat yet as their intakes are still green. And a shot of Yamato firing the Wave Motion Gun for the first time. Analysis: Yamato gets a send off from Earth by Commander of all Earth Naval Forces (Hijikata) and his flagship...which aside from Yamato is likely the Entire Defense Force. It then moves on the Mars to prepare for their first warp test. Yuki drops off flowers to honor Sasha and perhaps also those on Mars that lost their lives in the War. Warp test brings them to Jupiter. Possibly some engine trouble forces them to land on the floating continent. There they engage several Gamilas warships, then decide to test the Wave Motion Gun on the enemy base...with interetsting results. Spoiler for Episode 4: Here is something somewhat different than before. Yuki and Kodai appear to be investigating a frozxen wreck on a moon of Saturn. (The next image is of the Pluto Base) Yamato investigates a canyon with her own spotlights is new. Looks like they found a wreck or maybe several wrecks. Makoto in a spacesuit hiding behind Analyzer. I have no real context here so it is difficult to guess what is going on. The burning wreckage on the ice plain is definately one of Yamato's auxiliary craft (Cosmo Seagull?). Yamato in the canyon being attacked...by what I don't know. Cosmo Zero "02" launching. I'm going to assume this is Yamamoto, though it could be Kato. Also from the starboard side catapult. Kodai always seemed to launch from the port side catapult so that fits. Gamilus Tanks. Not sure if that is gun fire from Yamato's people or if that is the tank's anti-personal gun firing. The new flying thingy. A Gamilus Assualt Ship. And of course the Cosmo Zero again. Analysis: This may be the same and yet different. Yamato goes to Saturn, supposely because of a distress call or some other earth signal. They find wreckage of Earth ship(s) there. They are attacked by an Assault Ship and its tanks. Perhaps more. Yuki and Kodai, possibly with others including Makoto and Analyzer are attacked by the tanks. Yamamoto, perhaps against orders, takes a Cosmo Zero out to help. I can guess they find the wreck of the Yukikaze...but there might be a twist to this. Spoiler for Episode 5: Yamato getting hit by the Reflex Gun. Yuria on duty. Must be the night shift on the bridge. Niimi and Sanada in the science office judging by the chairs. Kodai and Yuki someplace on the ship. Maybe the rear observation dome? Kodai and Yamamato in fighter jackets as Yamamato is formally included as one of Yamato's fighter pilots. My guess is she saved Kodai's butt using the Cosmo Zero last episode. Kodai's Cosmo Zero ("01") folded up and armed to the teeth. A Cosmo Falcon just after launch, so I guess there will be an interesting dogfight this episode. And the Reflex Gun firing and being fired by the Gamilus Commander on Pluto. Analysis: Yamato heads to Pluto to take care of the Gamilas Base as it is still a threat to Earth. It wouldn't be nice if Yamato got the Cleaning Device from Iscandar only to find Earth's population killed or enslaved by the Pluto Base troops because Kirishima alone can't stop the Gamilas. Probably in for a nice action episode with a big scene with the Cosmo Falcons. Either against Gamilas fighters or warships. Possibly some character building as well before the main fight starts at Pluto. Also likely a cliffhanger type with the Reflex Gun and the Cosmo Zeros. Spoiler for Episode 6: The primary bad guy for this series. Dessler. Pluto Base Commander Schultz, likely taking to the homeworld. Dessler enjoying the luxuries afforded him as ruler of the Empire. Hiss, Dessler's right hand...or maybe his left, seems to still be somewhat of a joke. At least with Dessler's women (be they concubines or bodyguards (unknown which presently). Two Cosmo Zeros (Kodai and either Kato or Yamamoto) on a raid against the Pluto Base. Kodai in his Cosmo Zero. Captain Okita likely giving an important order. Gamilus anti-air defenses (I know we've seen these guns before on Balan (in 1974), but I don't think we ever saw them fire) The Reflex Gun charging for another shot. Yamato taking off just in time to avoid a Reflex Gun shot. Analysis: Probabaly the end of the Pluto Base due to the Cosmo Zeros. Dessler may be amused by this set of events. Can't tell if this is the end for Schultz and crew or if they will get a showdown in space with the fleet in the next film. The old episode would have one more after the Pluto Base's destruction for the Fleet to try to take out Yamato. That episode would introduce us to the Asteroid Ring that is sort of iconic...even though they only used it twice that I recall. Don't know if they will keep that or not. Wonder what it was. That Kodai is using binoculars to spot things is interesting. Guessing based on the number in his set that the Kirishima was about 82,000 km away. And there are two additional Gamilas Empire persons added. One a a large man with a strong chin and beard. Named Yaentry. He seems to be of the same race and ranking structure as Schultz and Gantz. The other is a female. Named Cerestera. She has sort of light maybe white skin (vampire white) and purple hair. She has pointed, pronounced ears. She has a more traditional Gamilas officer's uniform (save the colors are different to match her skin rather that the usual green uniforms). She also has a cape, skirt, and thigh high boots. __________________
