Also it's amazing how everyone instantly assumes eroge = nukige despite the massive amount of companies that make them based on plot. I suppose manga are now porno magazines because H-manga exist eh?
Not me, there are many sex visual novels where there is actually a plot. Not all are just pure sex.

I suppose straight up porn vs something with a story could be comparable to having sex with someone you've just met vs someone you've come to care about. The point being that giving a shit about something makes it a better emotional investment.

Bingo. I find "porn" to be boring as hell. Get me to care about the people, show them developing a relationship, make it matter, and zing, that's a hell of a lot more erotic.

Considering most of my favourite VNs do not contain H-Scenes (The Kyokugen Dasshutsu Series, Dangan Ronpa, the Kagaku Adventure Series) and those that do could have VERY WELL done without (or would even be better, like the TypeMoon games) I voted Nay.

But really, it depends on the story. If it's a lovecomedy, I guess ero scenes kind of fit.

Ero works if there is an emotional investment into the characters - great examples of that are the various storylines in Crescendo and the climax (figurative, storytelling, sexual ) of Meiya's route in Muv-Luv Extra. Otherwise it's just fanservice and doesn't really have a point.

But of course the ones who do like it always love somethiing with words and visuals and music to maximize the strength to pump to.

If you don't want it, don't play it.

Is there any worth in a poll like this?

No, the polls pretty stupid. Its like asking if there should ever be ero in games, to which I answer let people do wtf they want if its not hurting anyone man.

I beg the question:
Will investing in All-Ages version of quality visual novels help promote the foreign VN market?
I think it might be good to unlink "sex" with "VNs" to appeal to a larger audience.

Who knows, but even then, that's not a major concern for eroge makers since the foreign market makes up such a tiny source of their revenue anyway

VN's already only appeal to a pretty select and almost limited audience in the first place. If an all ages VN don't sell that well in japan, what chances do you think that one will be succesfull in foreign countries?

Plus all the extra costs (translation, marketing etc.) for bringing those games to the foreign market combined with a low chance of succes/profit and it's not that strange why we haven't seen that many English translated VN's in the west.

I do think non-ero VNs have something to offer to anyone who wants a good story (provided the given VN is good), so it's a matter of reaching out to the intended audience. I think anime fans would be top of that list; I myself find them a refreshing alternative to just watching something. And when you're given a choice to make in the story, you care that much more because you're making that choice.

Meh, I couldnt care less about VNs being officially localized. If they are, fine, but Im not going to sit and talk about how it should be done, b/c I think theyre not meant to appeal to many people, at least not the typical ones. Too many mainstream games that havent left Japan that Id rather rally for localization.

Weve even seen mainstream VNs like Gyakuten series and Prof. Layton do well outside of Japan, but that hasnt really affected the other VNs at all.

Eroge is a visual novel.

Not all visual novels have erotic content, hell some of them aren't even about sex or romance.

A lot of people play eroge for their erotic content. They don't play visual novels just for ero.

Unless eroge isn't a visual novel, the exclusion of erotic content from all visual novels would make sense.

But eroge is a visual novel, with erotic content.

I don't give a damn about erotic scenes in some visual novels I played, I find it annoying. But there are time when I play eroge for erotic content (and I don't give a damn about raising flag there).

Hence erotic content is fine for eroge. But I just wish there were more all age visual novels where I don't have to waste my time with erotic scenes while trying to conquer all roads.

Except that Gyakuten Saiban and Layton aren't visual novels, so they're not directly comparable with 'other VNs'.

They follow the basic visual novel format... character sprites on a background image with text scrolling at the bottom or on screen, and music.

How is that not a visual novel??

By your vague interpretation many RPG's are also a VN, because it also has character sprites talking with scrolling texts >_>
You probably have to look at what game element is the most dominent one to somewhat make a conclusion.

IMO gyakutan saiban games are pretty much primarily VN's with some point and click elements and minor puzzle elements, while i think the layton games are rather more a puzzle game with VN elements because it has a story.

Obviously not games with small sprites like rpgs, man. I'm talking about full body sprites that you can't control, they just are there on the screen and talk to each other. And have you ever played an RPG where the main character narrates during gameplay???

Regardless, that doesn't change the fact that Gyakuten Saiban is a visual novel. I have a feeling that Redkey said GS isn't one just because GS doesnt have moe graphics or focus on love or something that has nothing to do with what a VN fundamentally is. I included Professor Layton to get my point across, because it's enough of a visual novel to introduce many non-Japanese gamers to how VNs work.

You mean most Shin Megaten games, Persona games, some wild arms games like x fire, almost every atelier serie game, the newer Phantasy Star games, Disgaea games, Valkyria chronicle games, certain final fantasy games like the tactic series and many many others?
Heck even non RPG's like corpse party and blazblue have that format.

I never denied that the gyakuten Saiban games aren't VN's (i even said that it was primarily a VN), i was more doubting on your statement that the layton games were VN's.
