I have to say I enjoyed the episode, though I understand why some people don't. I think the main problem here is that the show's trying to be a jack of all trades but a master of none, which is why when every episode comes out there's always very polarised reactions.

While I know opinions are divided, I really liked Episode 4 of this show. And Episode 3 wasn't downright bad, in my view. From my perspective, KnK was at least showing the possibility of becoming "legit good" with Episodes 3 and 4. Then we had a slower-paced Episode 5 - I had some issues with it, but I did think it was good for Mirai and Mitsuki's character development.

So after 3 decent-to-strong episodes, I felt this show might turn it around. And then I'm hit with this...

I can see why someone who's already given up on the show being "legit good" might find Episode 6 very amusing. But given that I still had faint hope this show could turn into a "legit good" supernatural action series, Episode 6 was painful, because it has basically killed what hope I had left.

What a whacky episode.

Looking forward to some people doing this IRL.

I thought this episode of fun and not bad at all. But I do agree that it should have been an OVA episode instead.

Which one? The "dancing like idols and being doused in Mountain Dew" shtick?

Interesting... No Kigami... I wonder if the last 3 episodes will have him in it or will this mean that he's busy in another project. I'm ok with him being the director just as long as he doesn't do the script.

Well this isn't an idol show to begin with. What they pulled out here just shows that they can do a good job with another well choreographed dance even without Yamakan.

Otoh, I haven't watched macross frontier so I won't judge. im@s was definitely well done. It's a mix bag of outsource though. AKB0048 and Love Live were mostly CG so nope.

Leaving aside choreography and animation techniques, all of those shows had a lot of "heart" and thus was pleasing to look/listen to. Kyoukai's ep on the other hand, just made me laugh at how absurd it is rather than how good it was

Haven't watched AKB, but Love Live was a pretty good idol show and pretty decent show in general. The CG doesn't even detract from from the overall goodness. I'd give it a shot. Anyway...

This episode was so ridiculous. So ridiculous. I felt that Mirai was being even more annoying this episode with her usual shit, and I felt the same with Akihito and his explicit fetish. But the last idol bit redeemed it all for me...until the next ep. The song was decent, and the animationz and choreography were awesome. I also loved it when Ai came out. She's so hnnnggggg, and so was Sweet Potato. :3

Couldn't agree more. In fact I found myself fast-forwarding several times during this episode, which usually says a lot about my (lack of) enjoyment of a show...

To me, this episode was absolutely dreadful. It was already hard to deal with the inserted gags during the more serious episodes, so a full reta-... gag episode was a bit too much to take.

Don't really get what this means.

I enjoyed the episode, though was sad they never beat it.

It did show two things:

1. Ai looks like May J.
2. It kind of shows how feminine the dances for co-ed groups can be. I don't know why though. Even AAA who is pretty good with it does that despite having 5 boys and only 2 girls.

Well, it is true that the animation sequences for the finale were very good, and I myself was very happy they did not use cgi for it, something which I dislike in idol related animation to begin with.

But I guess (having had a day to process the ep after the sneak attack) that is not really the issue. The issue is the incongruity. I was fine with the ep up until after the first failed attempt ith the youma. After that it spun wildly in an unexpected direction. It is the contrast and incongruity with the overall tenor of the series as a whole that blindsided me.

Yes, the animation was very good for the idol sequence, and I felt the slapstickish humor and all that to even be light hearted and silly in an effective way at times. But that is not the point. At least for me.

I really do feel it would have been better to release this as an OVA, but better in the sense of preserving the continuity of the story and series I already was enjoying.

Hmph! So there!

'Fagging' is another term for 'fanboying.' So he means that Mitsuki's awesome, but that she can only take the series so far for those who don't enjoy much else about Kyoukai no Kanata. (I personally enjoy the series and liked this episode as well, but yeah)

I'm beginning to wonder if KyoAni isn't just using this series as a test bed for other genres. We saw action scenes back with Rikka/Touka, then action OVAs afterward, now we see action plus magic plus idol singing. I think they may have a couple of projects in mind and we're watching the research.

In short KnK watchers are just beta testers.

i don't think this kind of episode is out of place at all for a show about high school spirit warriors.
Things like the hollow shadow isn't the norm. Most seem to do it as a side-job, and have regular real world jobs.

This being a "monster of the week" type isn't what makes it out of place. Sure, most of what's hunted will be more like that, and not like the Hollow Shadow. That's to be expected.

What makes it out of place is that serious spirit warriors should not be this dumb at what they do (especially when at least one of them does it as a job to earn money).

Episode 6 was very out of place given what came before.
