He is not entirely good or evil, however, I'd place him as more of an anti-villain than an anti-hero.

As many people he pointed out, Saazbaum is guilty of war crimes on the level of the Nazis, specifically ordering the deaths of millions of unarmed civilians and the genocide of another race.

In this way, he can be considered like Hitler in that he is motivated in part by (perceived) revenge- Hitler believed the Jews betrayed Germany in World War I (obviously they didn't), and Saazbaum intends to kill millions of, and possibly even wipe out the Terrans as revenge for his dead fiancee (it is not clear if the UFE had any role in destroying the hyper gate and triggering Heaven's Fall, but it is clear that none of the millions of civilian he killed were in any way guilty)

Now, enough ad Hitleram, regarding the "less evil" side to Saazbaum:

He realizes full well that the feudal system of the Vers Empire was foolish and, based on his comments in Ep. 14, intends to change it to some form of more egalitarian system.

Now, from this point of view, he can be considered more of an anti-villain- Saazbaum is a character willing to commit heinous crimes to achieve a justifiable goal, namely freeing Mars from feudalism.

That said, when the Russian tried to same thing, it quickly turned into a brutal dictatorship far worse than the absolute monarchy they had ended....
Judging by how he's acted so far... He's a nobleman who wants to take the power away from royalty and put it in the nobles' hands. He's not the first.

For all the "beginnings of democracy" stuff they say about the Magna Carta, that's essentially what it did- the common people couldn't vote for centuries afterwards.

Now, a little thing I noticed in the mecha and weapons thread that, if it is true, supports something that has been bouncing around in my head related to Slaine for a while:

If the power of Tharsis really is time manipulation, that might further support that Slaine is becoming something of a Homura to Asseylum's Madoka.

Look at the similarities:

1. Both of them had their lives saved by their love interest (Asseylum/Madoka) when they first met.

2. Both of them swore to save their love interest when they discover they are in danger. This becomes an obsession.

3. Both are separated from their love interest.

4. When they discover the enemy has successfully harmed their love interest (events of Madoka Rebellion/Childhood's End), they "turn to the dark side", becoming increasing psychologically damaged and going more "yandere". Eventually they inadvertently turn against the wishes of their love interest.

Mind you, there is a difference in that Homura still seems to have the chance to kiss and make up (perhaps literally) with Madoka, while Slaine, probably not....

Btw, for those who still find polls interesting, Slaine finally made it into the Newtype one, at #10!

Inaho was back in at #7.

(And the winners were the main characters from Psycho-Pass )

Crunchyroll isn't listing a new A.Z episode for this coming Saturday (Mar 14). Has there been an announcement or something that confirms no new episode this week?

I just checked the schedule in Japan for Tokyo MX's official site, and Aldnoah.Zero episode 22 is still listed to be shown Saturday night. Maybe Crunchyroll has not updated their website, or maybe something got delayed?

That's good to know. I was puzzled because the other Saturday CR shows had their listings already. Thanks for checking for me!

I'm speculating that it's related to Mr. Shinji Ogawa's passing... I'm hoping that his character passed away as well instead of having another voice actor take over Emperor Reyregalia Vers.

Bumping this because unlike most people here I waited before giving this series a watch. Last week I marathoned the entire first half in a single day and since the day before yesterday I marathoned the second half including the final episode which aired today. I have to say, this was one really awesome series through and through! The only thing I didn't like was the music and how the second half slowly got more fan servicy, but otherwise I liked everything including the art (which was top notch), the cast not being annoying, there was good writing and a conspiracy theory to boot, it had plenty of action, the mechs and ships were unique, and the pacing was well done. Even the ending seemed very fitting. You know a series is going to be good when a guy who doesn't shut up about women gets killed off in the second episode. With that said here is where I rank both halves:

Spoiler:

Now we wait for the count down on the official site to lead to something.

I felt a little bad Hark died. But that's what happen when you try to imitate Kira Yamato's beam-spamming style.
