Angry Video Game Nerd aka James Rolfe

I don't think anyone's made a thread about AVGN so I thought I'd make a general discussion thread about him.

In case you don't know who he is, the AVGN is a self-explanatory character played by James Rolfe who reviews bad old school games and makes fun of them. You can find his videos on Youtube or Gametrailers or his website Cinemassacre.

I've heard of this guy a while back but I didn't watch his reviews until recently. While I think he occasionally goes too far with the vulgarities I think his reviews are generally funny with my personal favorites being the Die Hard, Dragon's Lair, and the 2nd 2007 Christmas special reviews.

It's kind of interesting watching these reviews since I haven't played or even heard of the majority of the games he's talking about. Nevertheless, the jokes are accessible and don't rely too much on insider knowledge or anything to get. Watching his videos have kind of jogged my memory about certain games. I had almost forgotten about the first TMNT game and The Karate Kid VG adaptations until I watched the respective reviews. It kind of made me nostalgic watching those videos, and I fully agree with him that those games were ridiculously hard.

So what do you guys think of him?

The lack of links in the OP amuses me.

AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic are the best. Period. With Spoony as a follow-up.

Wow, not much people in AnimeSuki likes Angry Video Game Nerd, well I've been watching since November 19th, 2006. It's going downhill for a little for me, but who cares it's great. I don't own the DVDS, maybe for a good reason, because it's cheaper if you watch them on the internet. In real-life I too sometimes act like Angry Video Game Nerd.

oh yes. Definitely a lot of curses. Hell his entire theme song is pretty much one obscenity after another.

I never found this guy funny, just cause I don't find pointless raging jabber and continuous cursing very good humor.

The Nostalgia Critic on the other hand is a different story. Guy makes me laugh every episode.~

Heck even his one review of the Bebe's Kids game was x100 more funny than any of AVGN's reviews.

I remember being really into his videos a few months ago to the point of marathon'ing them. Haven't watched one in a while though.

He swears alot, but behind that he does actually raise a lot of good points, and I especially like his reviews on the older systems (Odyssey, Atari, etc).

People dislike him for being angry? Tell me one person who doesn't get angry.

In case anyone doesn't know or gets the wrong idea about him, the real James Rolfe is nothing like the Angry Video Game Nerd, much like how the real Doug Walker is nothing like Nostalgia Critic or Chester A. Bum. If you watch clips where he reviews as himself, he's considerably calmer and more generous.

Also, he doesn't swear that much, if at all, in his board game review series, Board James, which is quite funny in its own way.

What a shitload of fuck!

For the most part, he easily personifies the Exactly what it says on the tin trope.

The main thing I like is that he parodies the internet tendency to rant obsessively about stuff they hate (so why are we so obsessed with stuff we don't like?). Thanks to the Nerd, I've found out about games I've never wanted to.

I enjoy The Angry Video Game Nerd and he makes a good point about games in a funny way. Games are either too hard or the controls are too hard to operate, especially his latest review, Action 52... 52 shitty games for $200 with glitchy graphics, broken gameplay, broken controls, etc.

Also enjoy his Board James series as well...

I enjoy his videos. His other works are pretty cool too. I also like Nostalgia Critic and SpoonyOne. Linkara is also very amusing and informative and I don't like comics! Too bad there is none like them for anime stuff, maybe MarzGurl and ThatDudeintheSuede (when he still was doing his stuff). I enjoy JewMario, LordKat, and Benzaie too.

I've only watched reviews of things I had heard about or am familiar with. I enjoyed them a lot, except for his Turtles III movie review.

Action 52: The Cheetahmen is up now, and wow it really did suck. So that means Action 52 ain't worth the money, although The Cheetahmen isn't as bad, why not released it as a separate cartiage? Would you pay $200 for the Cheetahmen? No, I might as well wait for Super Nintendo.

Speaking of Super Nintendo, there was about to be a version of Action 52 to be released, but it got cancelled. I guess it's because of the lock-out chip inside or maybe Nintendo sued them before releasing it.

A very funny review though I'm surprised he didn't mention the music since it seems widely agreed that the music's the only good thing to come out of Cheetahmen.
