I actually don't think this is THAT unexpected. This is just like what happened in ES21, Deimon played Shinryuji in the first round which is considered the best team in the region.

I'm sticking with my prediction of Alice throwing the match in the end.

This DOES come as a surprise. Alice WAS supposedly the biggest hurdle for Souma, so going by standard unwritten shounen rules, there should be an incredible black horse on the other side of the bracket.

It should be one of these 3: Erina's Aid (least likely), Megumi(whatchugonnado), Brazilianmysteryman (most probable)

It WON'T be TAKUMI / HAYAMA. Hayama basically fulfilled his role and should only have another appearance, proving that Souma outgrew him. I don't think Alice's aid is suited to be a final round competitor either so one of the remaining 3.

Anyone who expects takumi to have even the slightest bit of relevance in souma's growth should find a good explanation, cuz I'm curious what else he could bring to the table besides being fodder.

Megumi is going to be final boss in this arc. Soma has the judges and audiences in his mind when he is cooking his dishes, and Megumi only has Soma in her mind when she is preparing her dishes.

The judges ate Megumi's dishes, and can feel the abundance taste of love put into the food, and declares that Megumi's dishes is superior than Soma. Soma can't believe it and ask Megumi for what had she done to her dishes, and Megumi simply answer " I am thinking of you when I am making the food". Soma finally realized the secret of cooking ultimate dishes that his father trying to pass down on him. Megumi blushed. Erina make a call for the best assassin in the world, because there is a pest she need to terminate on the spot.

That a good way of making me to INSTA-DROP on the manga if this kind of sh!t happened and I'll cancel my pre-order on the manga on Amazon. But thankfully it won't, so I'm happy.

(Honesty I'll much prefer Megumi to be replaced and have Sakaki to be the heroine instead)

Your will never be fulfill, since Megumi is the main heroine and will always be.

I think that the main heroine is Erina,Fwarlord.
Erina appeared before Megumi,then Erina is the main heroine.

At this point I don't care for Erina, but I will give the mangaka a chance to maybe convince me she's a decent character.

I am still in the "undecided" camp. IMO Erina, as she is, is a total mismatch for Souma. They are both quite strong willed. Erina constantly looks down on Souma, and tries to belittle him, however Souma has a strong self-esteem and it seems that he is completely immune against her "Queen Power". This leads to a deadlock, unless at least one of them changes.

Souma seems to usually be honest to himself, while Erina is... well a tsundere... In many mangas, tsundere girl pairings work because the MC is a wimp, or at least a wimp around the tsundere girl (there are exceptions though where they can pull it off without using this "wimpy MC card"). However as we know Souma is anything but a wimp MC, so the typical way of having the relationship with the tsundere just turning her tsun side on/off at random is impossible or at least veeeery unlikely, because it just does not... work like that usually. The "melting of the ice queen" is a complete neccesity here, but that has to be done in a subtle way.

If they can pull this off in an acceptable way, where the characters are not completely OOC and the development leading to it is good, then fine, however the author/artist team screwes it up by rushed development, or Erina "suddenly" becoming all deredere, then good bye SnS, I'd drop it in an instant.

As I mentioned already, that is why Megumi probably exists. She is the failsafe, should the mangaka(s) not manage to pull the Erina ending off, or if for some reason they decide to go the drama route and go completely for Megumi for some reason with Erina as the Archrival.

Well my train of thought may seem a bit confusing, so I'll just leave it at that for now.

we are barely 62 chapters in and you guys are debating a fact that hasn't even been touched on for the most part by the author.

If you guys haven't noticed that deciding on a heroine in shounen can be far too unreliable, I suggest reading up on Ichigo 100% and Ultimate Hentai Kamen. For the manga gourmets out there, I warmly recommend Molester man, which is probably the single best manga out there.
