Ha, those thieves messed with the wrong guys and girls. However, I'd say that the real hero for this episode would be Kokopo, the giant bird. Not only cute but also tough when she needs to be.

The pink-haired girl has feathered ears. Interesting.

I was hoping Kuon would take a hand in stopping the thieves, but apparently the final credit has to go to the chocobo kokopo's crush.

And here I was thinking there's no way that fat bird could be cooler than a giant tiger. Boy, was I wrong

So, now we have a sister-type, who might also be a fujoshi, and what seems to be a mix of Karura and Touka (Please be as cute as the latter). Not bad at all. On another note, the series also manages to stay classy (and hilarious) during a bath scene, quite the achievement.

Next time seems to be more slow paced stuff, which is fine, though a bit weird for anyone who remembers what happened in the first series

P.S: Right, this is the first time I post in an episode thread, so to make it clear, Kuon is glorious. That is all.

The male friendship thing sounded more like an excuse than fujoshi-ness, though.

First 2 in Haku's harem: effeminate courtier and giant bird

Giant bird is awesome, so no complaints.

From Kuon's comment about the relative sizes of the capitals, I'm guessing Tuskuru is a relatively small regional empire, with the original Utawareumono taking place over a corner of the land mass. That's one way to avoid conflict with the original game's empire: Just make the setting bigger than the original setting implied.

I feel cheated, why isn't the masked guy the main guy from the first series? >_>

The first Utaware was in Japan, whereas this is clearly in China, so yeah, probably.

Just deducing from clues

1. We already know the map of Japan from the first Utaware, and this massive land and nations of Kujuri & Yamato is absent.
2. While the first Utaware's world was heavily based on ancient Japan (most notably, Tusukuru is Ainu), this False Mask's setting while having a Japanese name for a country, is Chinese in clothing and architecture. I saw the game's screenshots too, and they were entirely Chinese.

EDIT: Looked up wiki to see if anything supports this,
Spoiler:

Actually, there was a map published in a japanese gaming/anime magazine ( I guess the map is probably included in the game manual) and it shows that Yamato is based in the lands around the real world Sea of Okhotsk, so in other words, Yamato is set in real world far eastern Russia. You were close, tough.

Ah, interesting. The anime DOES indeed look pretty cold.
The culture is clearly Chinese based though, perhaps with a dash of Mongolian.

Because that would be too obvious? Relax. There's no way Hakuoro won't factor into this somehow.

I continue to love seeing the expressiveness of the girls' animal features. It's delightful every time their ears fidget. I was also amused by how Kuon seemed to be eyeing that general as he rode away. The look on her face and the way her tail was waving back and forth seem to suggest something, at least, which I'm reading as speculative interest.

In other news, Haku's complete lack of reaction to Kuon having charged naked out of the bath is worth a laugh. Can't blame him girl, you brought that one on yourself, and he didn't even seem interested (which makes me wonder what's wrong with him ).

Okhotsk? !O_o

Uwah...no wonder it looks so cold...

Anyway, another enjoyable episode on the whole, though the courtier shtick got old pretty fast for me.

My only complaint is that we did not get more screentime for Kuon...also, was very thankful Kuon did not clobber Haku for seeing her like that. Thank you for avoiding that cliche! Kinda refreshing, actually.

Kuon seems to have a decent sense of fairness. I can't see her getting upset at him for something that was her fault. Maybe if he'd leered at her or something, but that's not really Haku's style anyway.

Or you could look at it as saying that the author doesn't need to resort to cliches like that to characterize Kuon, because she's already shaping into a nice, unstereotypical character of her own.
