One Piece - FOX BOX (4Kids) episode discussion
Since One Piece will be here the 18th (9:30/10:30 central) on FOX, I thought that it would be really good to have a discussion on this 4Kids version of One Piece.

I thought I should mention something, and something VERY SURPRISING.
4Kids has released episode 1's title name, and guess what? It's identical to the japanese ver. of the name with the exception "I'm Luffy!" is removed. Could this mean something? |

The thing that probably bugs me most of all is the foxbox itself. They don't have a weekday schedule so they only show an episode once and virtually never again. So if you miss one, you can get so totally lost you lose intrest all together. I would have felt better if WB had gotten it because hey, they played the poo out of popular shows like yugioh and pokemon. The more i think about it, the more frusterated i get. *goes to write an angry letter* As for waking up, I get up at 5:00 to go to school everyday anyway, so getting up at 8:30 is like sleeping in. |

4Kids - amateur-ish - dedicated to the "kiddies" and pre-teens Bandai Entertainment, VIZ, FUNi etc... - dub dedicated to older teens > adults (excluding SD Gundam Force) - anime edited (only on tv) - anime unedited (only on DVD and International channel) U.S > Japan (difference in letters in how the names are pronounced) Japan's R would be the U.S' L, see the difference? So it'd probably make sense.

The problem I have with Zolo is that he was pretty much named after Zorro not Zollo so it should definitely be pronounced as an r but whatever, I'm not really going to watch this since I teach a class at 9:45 but I will hope for uncut subtitled dvds.

The only reason I'd ever hope that this butchered version of the show will get big is so that they'll release merchandise and I can buy it all non-import. That'd be nice. |

Zoro becomes Zolo for the same reason that they changed the title of Conan's show. Japanese compyright law is lot more relaxed than the American version. Over here, the name Zorro belongs to the heirs of the original author, and is licensed for use by the studios that make the movies. Those people might not like their character associated (however loosely) with a cartoon about pirates, so the name has to change to avoid a lawsuit.
I doubt that it would actually have been a problem for them to leave it as it was, but 4kids does have a good reason to fret about it. |

heh, Knowing 4Kids. They'd be willing to change stuff dramatically from the original anime's form. And have us bash them for it. Like name change etc... I think they should get their cue of how Bandai or any other company edits their anime for tv viewing.
At least Bandai wouldn't come up with something corny as having Sanji chewing on a lollipop. Rather, they'd digitally edit the cigarette and have him biting on a twig. Which kinda looks more better. Though unfortunately, it was handed down to 4Kids.
