Oh NOOOOOOO.

Also, they removed the "I love you scene" from the boat. At least these are rumors I heard.
Honestly, all these girls who wanted to hear the final admittance of love, and these bastard producers left them hanging.

Anyway, aside from the above and the fact that the animation was, again, made in the Land of Very Tight Budgets, it was a pretty cool episode. And the flying scene was pretty beautiful (I guess that's where the budget went ). And the end... waaaah. ;_;

But no Aloha shirt. *phew* THANK YOU, COSTUME DESIGNER! (PS, I want Satoru's shoes.)

I am so jealous of all the people who have read the novel. Both in terms of being able to actually read the story in detail and also because they've been able to experience (or at least from what I'm seeing from everybody who has read it) fulfilling Satoru and Saki scenes. Gaaaaaah anime producers, why?!

Another incredibly tense episode ..

I wish I hadn't watched the preview either, it's going to make this next week extremely long.

My heart breaks for Tomiko. ;_; I figured Saki was the right person for her job, but I didn't see the torch being passed so soon...

If anyone thought Yakomaru was just messing around, those water mutants just confirm that he's going for total annihilation. It's honestly quite a genius, effective way to bring about destruction. I'm not rooting for him, but you have to admit that even without the Akki, Yakomaru is ridiculously capable against the humans. I hope they shed some light on his intel.

Spoke too soon about A-1 Pictures actually giving this show some budget, because wow Part A had some special artwork. Though they did put budget where it was particularly poignant, e.g. the flying in the sky scene and the fight with the other child. Next week looks like it'll have a lot of action, so hopefully the animation quality goes back up.

I've been meaning to check out the BDs, but I'm curious if they fixed animation quirks? IIRC the first half of the series didn't have such drastic animation drops, though...

At this point, I wish I had the patience to wait until it's all over and marathon until the end. There's no way I could survive not watching weekly, though -- my curiosity is already difficult to bear. Almost picked up the books at Kinokuniya just the other day, but I know I wouldn't be able to hold back from reading it all.

@kuromitsu:
Yeah, I think those were lilies. Have read enough yuri manga to recognise them at least, despite my lack of plant knowledge

I'm guessing the director read the source material and ships Maria/Saki something fierce. I don't mind it, but I do think it's unfair to the story and its fans if you take other relationship details away for whatever reason. I'm curious if that's a time restraint/pacing choice or what, because as a non-novel reader, I think the pacing is pretty solid.

This anime knows how to properly build up. Anyways, really enjoyable and even more tense than some previous episodes.

Heh, I'm just not surprised at all. Such a shame really. The budget I can let slide since it's quite acceptable overall but these unnecessary quirks are an irritating itch on an otherwise great show. I know that Saki is the narrator and all but come on, first the extra lily pandering and now usurping the spotlight from the only other living main character in the cast? She even gets the narrative totally focused on her most of the time, including this episode since she got separated from Satoru, so it's not like she's in need of any more. =/

Urgh, now I have to either hope my reading skills improve fast enough so I can read the novels or if Vertical gets convinced to release them in English.

Rant aside, it really was another good episode. The mention of power leakage in the preview just screams all sorts of bad things even if humans end up eventually winning the war.

They gave us something different but at least as interesting: the two of them realizing the one they both loved was the faceless one, more than they loved each other.
Spoiler for speculation:

I don't mind novel readers adding information from the source material to further enhance our knowledge of what was presented in the anime, but I don't particularly enjoy novel readers complaining about how they changed the anime in ways that they did not like. The anime presents its story the way the producers and directors want, and as anime only viewers, we like to see how the story progresses from what we've seen. If people want to talk about the novel on how it is different or better, then there is the novel thread or other threads for that. Thank you.

As for the episode, it was very intense. I enjoyed quite a bit of it. During the explosion, it seems like someone was pushing Saki up in the air, protecting her. From flashbacks of Maria saying that she will protect Saki, it makes me wonder if that was Maria saving Saki during the explosion.

Also, I wonder if Squera drugged Maria and Mamoru, like he did with his queen. They could have caused them to go crazy or even die.

That sure looks like Maria in the next episode preview, though in a state that makes me more and more thinking she's been tortured/lobotomized/etc. I mean, if those rats had to use some of her real bones to fool Asahina, then I can only imagine what they did to Maria to keep her alive (and, in a state that doesn't have her exterminate the lot of them).

My only real complaint this episode (besides it not moving the story forward much), was that with all the power available to them via their Cantus, they really can't move a wounded woman?

Anyways, can't wait 'till next week.

edit: One day, animesuki will have two episode threads for anime with pre-existing material; one for those who derive pleasure in comparing an anime with the source, and one where the rest of us can avoid passive-aggressive spoilers.

You talking about Shun or Mamoru?

^Mamoru FTW!! Poor kid, nobody loves him - except, maybe, the tainted cats

Well humans were always vain(more-so now that they have so much power). No wonder Squealer stuck it to them so spectacularly. Die of thirst or die being burnt. This is looking more and more like an non-salvageable situation for humans. Unless Saki or/& Satoru somehow find Squealer and make him Squeal

Novel readers are allowed to compare source material in episode threads. You may not like that they are unhappy with the differences, but the spoiler rules do allow for limited comparisons to events that have already happened. Future spoilers are not allowed, however, but that rule has not been broken in the previous posts.

The way that Saki and Satoru seemed to forget Mamoru existed was harsh. What lousy friends, only remembering the friends they loved romantically (okay, so they thought they were about to die, but still). Maria was better than that.

I don't think the Fiend is Maria, and right now I don't even think that Maria is still alive. Remember, one scene in the credits shows the curled up figure of a person who looks about the right age to be Maria and Mamoru's child, whose figure does not fit anyone else notable in the cast. Saki said that so many people wouldn't have died if Maria wasn't born, and that is just as consistent with the Fiend being her child as it is for it being her or Mamoru. Probably more consistent, actually, given that Maria and Mamoru's bones were supposedly found and delivered by Yakomaru.

Although...thinking about this for a moment, Maria's best skill is the ability to float. She, in particular, might be able to manage with less bones than other people while still remaining mobile. But at this point of the series I'm beginning to doubt that we will have a legless Maria-Fiend sprung on us. It would really have helped if we were told whether the skeletons were complete.

Interesting that Tomiko is being shown to pass over the torch to Saki in a sympathetic manner. I think it's a good choice, given the context of this ep.

If the anime writers are leaving out Saki/Satoru and Satoru moments in favour of things like Maria flashbacks and so forth, I think it's a really bad choice. Saki and Satoru are our main characters now. It's idiocy for a series to go out of its way to minimise interaction between two main cast members who are carrying the show together. If Maria is still alive, it's a bit more excusable as she of course would remain part of the core cast, but if she's dead and therefore unable to play a meaningful role, I think it's a bad choice.

The next ep preview worried me. It might be out of context, but didn't it look as if Saki and Satoru were standing together while Saki talked about cantus leakage? This would be a really bad time for Satoru to come down with that. On the other hand, it could be pretty interesting if it's something affecting a reasonable proportion of the humans: aren't they taught to direct their negative feelings (rather, PK spillage) outside the barrier, or something like that? If the stress of the attacks affects them badly, maybe they will start to stop directing negative thoughts outside there.

I found it very interesting that Saki wondered why Yakomaru wanted to attack them so badly. Perhaps it's a sign that the series is going to cover that in some depth later on?

I didn't expect Tomiko to pass the torch to Saki already. It appears this is the end of the line for our GILF. She won't be able to get her revenge on Yakomaru.

As much as I hate the guy, I have to say I'm impressed with Yakomaru's strategy. He's studied his enemies well and taken everything into account. He's completely overwhelming the humans even without the use of his secret weapon and he's successfully taken advantage of the confusion. Furthermore, those giants mutant fishes or whatever the hell they are are deadly weapons. He's clearly been preparing this invasion for a long time and he's well on his way to win this war. At this point I think only Shisei can turn the tables around. The populace is too scared and helpless.

That flying scene was indeed beautiful and very nicely animated. I wish the whole anime could look as good, but alas... (man, A-1 has been having some serious budgeting problems lately).

You talking about Shin or Mamoru?
Poor Mamoru. They've totally forgotten his existence already, and that didn't require any brainwashing. It's sad how little they care about him. He was really the fifth wheel of the group (at least he had Maria).
