ArmA 2 Zombie Mod Alpha, "DayZ"
G'day blokes and blokettes,
I don't know if anyone else on these boards has seen this but there's been a Zombie Survival mod in the works for a few months which has finally gone Alpha about two weeks ago. I've been playing for the last few nights and had some very fun times even if just by myself. Here's the website; http://www.dayzmod.com/index.php And some videos to show the awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOB7YGgREFg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSWRfI4SkWc It's definitely a game to play as a group with everyone in a TS or Vent server with mics and working together. There are some very good videos of players working together on YouTube showing how even a small group can dispatch an entire town of Zombies and reap the benefits. That said you don't even have to be friendly and what I found playing solo is that a chance encounter with another survivor can be anything but profitable. I've watched helplessly in the distance as noob players are ambushed by Bandits armed to the teeth. I've seen RPGs used on players holed up in buildings. Unsuspecting survivors picked off by Bandit Snipers. Even witnessed a Survivor camp raided by a God damn Blackhawk with working door guns... It can be just as much fun to hunker down and watch other players than to get in the action yourself. Here's a short blurb of my first session posted on another forum to spread the word; Spoiler for Long Story:
tldr; Zombies. Massive Sand Box World. Do what you want! For an Alpha it has a lot of potential and with more community support I think we're one step closer to that ideal zombie survival mod we all dream about.

The game's pretty messed up at the minute. People just generally being mean and killing each other all the time so you lose your crap. I don't really see the appeal in it myself and it's still extremely buggy but maybe if they make it a stand-alone game it will be a lot better. I have some hope for this :P

"People just generally being mean and killing each other all the time so you lose your crap" is sort of the point. DayZ is a dream for EVE griefers and players like myself as it doesn't hold your hand and doesn't have any rules. I'm the type of player that will avoid battle when I can, and I don't team up with strangers, but I will kill anyone that tries to approach me "just because".
That said, it does mean it doesn't cater to a big crowd and it's very hit and miss. It's quite unique in that regard, just like EVE. It really becomes good once you get a team of people you know. EDIT: Unrelated.

I know it's a valid mechanic for the mod, but what I've heard is that the game started out alright but once a lot of people got onto it people just started shooting each other on sight, and there's problems with hackers. I mean shooting people on sight is perfectly okay, but isn't the point of the game more to team up with people and survive? I don't know, everyone plays differently but that's just how I view it.
