lol, not sure if people will start complaining about me suggesting Haruhi in every suggestion thread I visit.
But yes, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, you'll find that Haruhi-sama is theoretically a goddess, but she's literally a goddess as well.

Kamichu! -- a middle-school student becomes a god. My favorite of recent series.
There's a ontological aspect to Serial Experiments Lain, and you can argue that in some sense Lain is a god (some parallels between Haruhi and Lain occur to me). |

Ayashi no Ceres is based around the legend of a vengeful Angel. Pretty close, since she has god-like powers.
Fushigi Yuugi (same author as Ayashi no Ceres) is about girls on journeys trying to summon guardian gods. Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Hachiyoushou is about a girl who has a dragon god's power inside of her. While it can be used to protect their country, there are some who want to manipulate and abuse this power. Death Note is about "gods of death" (Shinigami) so maybe that counts It's becoming an anime this fall. Only thing with Valkyries I can think of is the video game "Valkyrie Profile". "Ragnarok the Animation" is an anime based roughly on Norse mythology and may have a Valkyrie in it (like the game it's based on does), but the anime is terrible and I never got far enough in it to find out. Meitantei Loki Ragnarok has more Norse mythology stuff. My memory is a bit rusty, but I'm pretty sure there were gods involved. |
