I believe it was a gag Hubbard wrote in response to some conversations with Heinlein about various cons endemic to mankind. Sometime later someone figured out it was a moneymaker and it continues to attract somewhat less than critical thinkers to this day.

but when i went to Anime News Network to check for the seiyuus of Tmos
then i look for the ratings and it suprised me

858 votes of the total 1458 are excellent
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency...me.php?id=6430

Well, it's ranked 7th using a Bayesian weighting scheme as described on that page, so yes.

It's kind of all over the place actually. I never trusted the ANN ranking system. To much emphasis on the newest series because of current popularity and then they fall of the chart within a few months (that and I don't really like what most people do so its not terribly helpful to me in choosing a series, although I am trying to branch out more and close the gap between my 80's anime and most folks modern favorites with mixed results). I remember Haruhi was #1 for a day during its peak (The singing episode) and has been sliding ever since given a few bumps every now and then. I've noticed a trend where the older a series gets the less Masterpiece and Excellent ranking votes it receives though. Still I'd kill to see what the chart looked like in the early days of the site though for curiosity purposes.

In the new issue of Newtype USA (October 2006) there is a two page article on The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya using this pic as background:

I have no idea how much was translated and kept for the english article...

And in the same issue, the Big in Japan listings (presumably from the August Newtype Japan issue) have Meloncholy at #1 anime, Kyon at #2 Male character, and Haruhi, Yuki and Mikuru at #2, #6 and #10 Female characters (respectively).

Not really surprised by the standings of the 3 girls. I would guess in general public eyes, it's hard to look pass Haruhi, since she was the main character in season 1, and the main storyline revolved around her and Kyon. But I would guess and hope that if you take a poll with just the hardcore fans, it might be a little different, and that is giving me tiny bits of hope that Yuki might be able to pull off the upset come next Thursday.

What kind of poll was that exactly? Like who was included in the sample?

The poll is Newtype Japan asking its readers to vote for their favorite anime series, male and female characters. Simple as that!

Well, it aired on a number of channels in Japan every week, though the first to air was Chiba TV. It's distributed by Kadokawa.

That's the FULL choreography of the ED dance (including parts that were cut out due to the still shots + credit) put up by Kyoani on the 18th.

Next:
http://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/haruhi/diary/09_20.html

Kyoani art staff all gathered in one room, with pages of art storyboards that's "a little too thin for an anime episode". In the middle of the room is the series producer Yamamoto-san, making a very familiar looking pose...
As I expected, Kyoani has just announced that a full version of the ED dance will be included in vol.7 (final volume) of the DVD.

Hahaha... well, personally I think this was also a much-needed announcement. Episode 14 (Someday in the Rain) is sort of a wierd episode to include by itself on a DVD (one of the disadvantages of the chornological order), so I figured they'd have to throw in some sort of extra. If you were buying the DVDs anyway, this is a good thing.

Damnit, you beat me to it. I was just about to post that.

Anyway, I think it's great that Haruhi has been recognized. I'm not sure I'd have awarded it best of the year myself, since I thought Mushishi was better, but I'd imagine this is a popular win. Very good.
