So, Ogata is early 20th century Satou. With how cool and collected he is, you wouldn't expect him to be one of the most insane people in the cast, and good lord, the competition is strong in that regard.

Oh god, the latest Tsurumi fanboy's family name is Koito. Explosive emotions do not run in the family, it seems.

On a different note, I love how Sugimoto can go from jaded soldier to purest boy when animals are involved.

Umi daaaa! Again.

When I cringe at the Bara comedy, that was funny at times, still too cringy(this anime lost a point for this), still..better sumo than hinomaru

Inkarmat...still confused but still she is the least trustworthy....is possible hijikata is the key for everything.

That twist at the end....Still we're going to jail soon.

As always the most burning question after watching an episode of Golden Kamuy is... "dafuq did I just watch?"

Had a good laugh this episode with the shenanigans as a consequence of partaking in the sea otter stew.

Lt. Tsurumi's charisma sure attracts some wierdos.

So we've got four episodes left this season, and as far as I can tell the underlying story has hardly moved forward at all. Most of the last few episodes have felt largely like filler. They've been okay, but not really compelling like the first season. Are they waiting on the manga-ka to write more?

Knowing this manga...that was not filler at all...

I don't read the manga, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know where the anime is at currently, but back when it started there was tons of manga material (100+ chapters). The anime actually has a faster pace than the manga, they've skipped at least one entire arc (the one in the OVA, and since there's a second OVA coming I guess that's another arc skipped) and they've shortened a lot of stories. Basically, the manga has even slower progression. It's not an an issue with the adaptation, that's just how Golden Kamuy is.

Personally, I don't feel this season is any slower than the first one. The main difference I can think of is that the heroes in S1 encountered quite a few prisoners and got their tattoos. That just doesn't happen anymore, so it feels like they're not making progress.

Despite all the mystery around Asirpa's father, my mind is still stuck on the Sumo match.

That was basically the point I was making. The whole purpose of the quest has been relegated to the background recently. At most they might have a couple more skins at the end of the season at this rate.

Well, at the end of the first season, the goal changed from "acquiring all the tattoos" to "meeting Nopperabou" so it makes sense they don't focus on it anymore. You can argue they're taking a while to get there, but I don't feel they've wasted time. Each episode brought something interesting to the table. I particularly liked that the show has explored the past of several characters and fleshed them out in the process this season. Tanigaki and Ogata's flashbacks were really great. As was Shinpachi and Hijikata's. Tsurumi hasn't gotten a flashback, but we've learned more about him through his interactions with his subordinates.

I dread watching the next ep of Hinomaru Sumo. That's going to be weird.

All I know is that it wouldn't have ended in a simple sumo match.
