I've read the latest chapters (raw too) and I don't remember anything like that. In fact right now the manga is in the middle of a training arc. As far as I can tell Magi doesn't have free power-ups or anything like that.

Finally got to watch the first episode, perhaps one too many boob jokes for me (but I have to admit even I laughed hard at the man boob scene).

The thing I like most though is this is somewhat giving me vibes of one of my favorite movies: the 1940 version of the Thief of Baghdad. Why? Because in both that case and here you have two protagonists and it is very much about the friendship they formed. Okay the connection is pretty loose but I am already enjoying the chemistry between Alibaba and Aladdin...I am sucker for a good friendship story.

I like what I've seen of Morgiana too. I am looking forward to learn more about her.

Just saw the first episode, I find the part where Aladdin waited till Alibaba has found his conviction, was bit generic. I have an idea who Alibaba is as a character, but the mystery is Aladdin, would love to see it be reveal later on, but with the beginning we see him and a giant, who most likely be his genie and base on the Disney movie, I'm assuming Aladdin is a human boy, though the chest wrapping and VA is swaying me otherwise and his mission is to aid is genie to find more genie and free them?!

Seeing slaves in an anime, made me bit queasy, but that's reality. I like most of the character designs, but the pink hair girl felt strongly out of place.

The main characters are a trio: Alibaba, Aladdin, and Morgiana (the slave girl).

He wasn't just waiting for Alibaba to make a move. You'll have to keep watching to understand Aladdin's character though.

Yes, those pics can be very misleading to anime only watchers.

Just a reminder that let's keep the manga spoilers out of this thread per the forum's spoiler policy (and clarified here). If you need to discuss elements of the manga, use the Magi - Labyrinth of Magic [manga] thread for that.

Thank you.

By the way isn't the magi only up to balbadd arc...since in the op there is that guy that should only appear after balbadd finish..if don't mistaken

Watched this a while back, really liked it, haven't enjoyed a first episode of a new shounen anime as much since Kekkaishi. Quite charming and I like the dynamic between the two main characters. Animation is high quality, music was nice and the OP was stunning. Looking forward to when Mor joins the cast and seeing where this goes.... So hard to resist reading the manga... though I might just read everything before the big arc... if they're going to speed through things to animate it.

And speaking of the manga...

Top 50 Oricon Rankings (01/10 - 07/10)

32. Magi #1 (25,934 / 227,781)
34. Magi #14 (25,226 / 183,698)
38. Magi #2 (23,322 / 208,533)
44. Magi #3 (20,650 / 203,712)

I hope to see a lot of this over the next 6 months! If this has a Kuroko's Basket sales explosion (or even better Ao no Exorcist) than a sequel would be a mere formality if the anime sales are decent.

It's a shounen series, of course the target audience is kids. Of course that doesn't mean that it can't appeal to demographics outside of its main audience, or that it has to be completely chidlish and cliche. It just started, while a weak defense... the majority of series like this start off very slow. Usually when they hit their first big arc is when they hit their stride... going by impressions and interviews... this series is going to sprint to that arc....

Wasn't it obvious enough by the OP ;p

Well maybe it was different in the manga but in the anime you can see no wrapping around his chest in the first scene, and who I assume is UGO says "My king, the greatest of all those who wield magic" blah blah.

It's his loss.
Like I said before, this series is closest to Fullmetal Alchemsit.
Lots of pararells, not in plot, but the atmosphere and storytelling.
The world building, faction conflicts, all these different agendas floating about yet focusing on the band of boys in search of destiny. Through out the series there's numerous pararells to FMA, and in a good way.

The chest wrapping and feminine design and choice of voice are all intentional, by the artist herself. She wanted to leave some of the characteristics of girl Aladdin she created before deciding to go with this incarnation.
