I was waiting for the BD, since the tv broadcast had so much censorship that it was almost incomprehensible. In the end, it's an interesting watch, original to say the least, though this format didn't help at all, especially for one not familiar with the manga, like myself.

Does that monster living in Maria's cave have any meaning? or is it just another guinea pig?

From what I remember Maria was weird even as a young girl. Somebody spilled hot tea (or something in a pot) onto her, leaving her scarred. She finds some weird caterpillar thing in a forest somewhere on an expedition and apparently extracts the virus from that.
The mutant boy dissolves into butterflies at one point. The manga shows later than the anime that Maria has impregnated herself. She confronts the brother and sister and mutates, EVENTUALLY COVERING THE ISLAND. The few people around get absorbed and they meet a the giant fetus...thing and the brother and sister mutate until they too dissolve into butterflies.
Here I forget if she just turns back to "normal" or what, but Maria gives birth to a caterpillar thing. That's as much as I can remember, but I think it was pretty much just an open-ended uh...ending.

Thanks for that tad of spoil information, since I do not think I can muster up the guts to look for and start reading the manga.

As of today, I finished with the last episode of the series, and as someone previously posted, the last episode is so lighthearted which makes the overall conclusion for the siblings' fate so sad on what they are going to turn to be in their teenage years.

Still, the anime didn't go further with that creepy Maria woman except that the last time seen in the show she was buck naked and pregnant with whatever monster thingy growing inside her while wearing her peculiar hat.
