I recently picked up this show, and am now fully caught up. Here are my thoughts after six episodes..

What I Like:

1. This is a wonderfully intense, hot-blooded show with a male lead that's just this fiery ball of righteous revengeful rage. In an age when anime male leads tend to be defined by their perversion, defined by their laidback nature, or defined by their helpful friendliness, its good and refreshing to see an anime male lead defined by his anger. The fact that his anger is totally legitimate, but also a double-edged sword, makes it all the more compelling and fun to watch.

2. The female lead being strong, silent, stoic makes for a great foil for the male lead. She also has an excellent character design.

3. The soldier uniform design itself is distinctive, what with the heavy focus on the grappling line aspect to it. The grappling aspect itself is great to watch.

4. No high schools, no romance, no harem comedy. This instantly heads off like 90% or more of the most obnoxious anime tropes of the modern era. Now, I'm not necessarily opposed to romance coming into play later on, but I like how this male lead doesn't particularly care (if he cares at all) about winning girls over. The female lead similarly doesn't seem to care much about romance. That is very different for modern anime.

5. The titans have an appropriately "epic horror" feel to them.

6. The action scenes are generally good.

7. The OP is magnificent. It really sets the mood and tone for the show, and I particularly love the part where all the soldiers are jumping up into the air in perfect synch.

8. The supporting cast has some neat character differences, and quirks. I particularly like Sasha with her obsession with eating and stealing food. It adds a touch of levity to a show that I think benefits from bits of comedic relief here and there.

9. While circumstances are obviously quite grim, it's not a total crapsack world. The scenery in the show is actually rather nice. The architecture has a generally quaint medieval Europe feel to it. It's not hard to see how this might be a decent world... if not for the Titans. That adds a greater sense of significance and worth to the fight against the Titans.

What I Don't Like:

1. Episode 5 did challenge my suspension of disbelief a fair bit. Thankfully, I didn't find anything in Episode 6 particularly hard to believe.

2. Whoever wrote this must have been the daughter/son of a salaryman who was brutally mistreated by his boss. It's downright laughable just how over-the-top EEEEVIL the lord/merchant class of this show seems to be, lol. But at least this is mitigated somewhat by it helping to give Mikasa a great scene.

3. Mikasa scored some easy-looking Titan kills. It does hurt the image of the rest of the cast a bit. I hope that future episodes will give the rest of the cast some kills of their own to compensate for this.

Aside from that, my only complaints so far would be minor quibbles, so I'm not going to get into them. On the whole, this show reminds me of Kurt Angle, given how it has the Three Is - Intensity, Integrity, Intelligence.

It displays intelligence in its pacing and writing. It shows intensity with its characters and drama. It has integrity in that its characters and story definitely come first, without much in the way of obvious pandering.

I'm certainly looking forward to more.

talk about milking MONEY!
The very first episode I saw them using those zipline tools and fighting made me think that it would make for an interesting video game. I hardly see how it's milking money, let's wait until they're selling Attack on Titan tea cozies for that.

So I decided to pick up this show and I really like it so far. But hey, any anime that's not a bloody harem or stupid fanservice has to have some potential.

The plot is pretty simple (humanity fighting gigantic zombies) and yet it's executed in a really compelling way, even though it retains a lot of shounen tropes. The animation has some great moments and the fights are very dynamic. When I heard the show was a tragedy I was worried it'd treat every bit of human affection like a lie just to put the protagonist through more crap (coughMiraiNikkicough), so I'm glad the cast has some decent relationships between eachother.

The opening is beyond awesome.

EDIT: Just watched episode 7. I think it'd be really interesting if some titans showed sentience and got into conflict with eachother. Granted, I'm a bit biased because I've always thought zombies are pretty boring antagonists.

Youtubers reaction of the end of episode 5.

Spoiler:

Apparently these videos are a hit in Japan. Even the manga author likes them in his blog since it let's him know international viewers enjoy Attack on Titan.

I really hope they go with an original ending for this series + Movie or whatever like most series of that kind tend to end up with, see FMA, BE etc.

Than when they remake this in 5+ years time or whatever when the manga is winding down they can actually give it to a studio who will actually treat this like an anime instead of a VOMIC.

Guess the production staff are really nearing their wits' end, hence the recruitment. Episode 8 felt like a picture drama, which is a shame considering what an important plot point it contains.

True, this episode really showed that there's a severe lack of either animators or animation budget in this show. They turned virtually every scene they could into a still shot to save time (and, Haruhi forbid, money) for the high profile action shots. I just hope this doesn't turn into a trend and we're just witnessing a temporary issue that'll be quickly fixed.

I can't believe all of you aren't heralding this new Anime as undoubtably one of the greatest animes of ALL TIME! IN 8 EPISODES NO LESS!

Swerves left and right, emotionally powerful storytelling and dialogue that blends perfectly into the superb speed and finesse of the action. This anime knows how to get your adrenaline going among other numerous things. I can't think of any other anime putting up this much of an effort into all categories of the genre. No other anime takes itself this serious in such a fantastical world, enough so that it instills a genuine real bond between the AOT world and our own where we enjoy viewing this anime. This animation is all in! You must be blind and in denial to not realize and embrace the feats this anime is reaching.

IT IS SINGLE HANDEDLY TAKING THE ANIME MEDIUM TO A NEW LEVEL! And trust me when I say I am not easily impressed and have been following anime for a very long time, but this animation is trying to blow everyones mind.

To those saying, this anime has a run-of-the-mill plot and is generic in any way is smoking some powerful stuff. Stop being pessimist and open up to a good thing for once in your life. Try to embrace the first anime in a while to try and put up a worthy effort.

Considering the anime quality we usually get, I would think people would openly accept a cure such as this. END>

I'm not so sure if this really happen in some animes due to lack of budget in production. I'm sure some manga viewers had noticed the changes in episode 8, but I hope they won't make an original anime ending if the staffs don't wanna ruin the series.

BTW, how come they have difficulties in recruitment?

They have around 70 Key Animators and over 22 contracted animation companies working on this show. So neither staff or budget is the problem, it's lead time. That's why you have one episode like episode 4 airing unfinished in some stations that require the materials early.

Yeah, I didn't find the behavior of those two strange, especially in this type of era. Nobility has a rather well known history of mistreatment of the low classes in RL.

They really messed up their planned schedule. I bet they aren't even sleeping to complete these episodes in time and that's still not enough.

Yeah, I fear a recap episode may be necessary in the future, just to give them breathing room. At least their managing the individual episodes well enough to smooth over some of the problems.

Why? You don't want to see the manga chapters this series covers actually animated in a remake in 5 or so years time?
