Im not a big fan of Marimite, Maburaho, or Ginban, so I can probably safely rule those out of consideration no matter how popular or good they are.

Suzumiya was great as an anime, but Im not so sure I'd like the book series.

"Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu" I have not heard of. This is going straight on my research list.

"Arianrod Replay Rurge" was a worrysome title, can I like a series with the word "replay" in its title? I have no idea what its about. Same goes for "Shin Fortune Quest", Im finding it heard to look into a series with a name like that unless someone recommends it. (Sushi-san, help me out here)

"Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo " sounds like Kagekara mamoru. I loved the anime series for its cuteness, but I know I wont be able to stand the book for two reasons: Mamo-kun is not someone i can identify with like a can with Saito. (at least the anime gives me the impression that he panics in romantic situations)

That of course leaves "Shakugan no shana". Im vacillating on that series, not knowing whether or not I should invest my time in starting it up... The storyline from the anime series didnt really capture my imagination so I have been avoiding it.

As a side note, I have a light novel called "とある魔術の禁書目録 " sitting on my bookshelf. I bought it sight-unseen based on popularity. (yeah, stupid of me perhaps). After I finish volum 8 of Zero, I'll give it a read, and report my thoughts if anyone cares to hear it

In any case, I know I'm going to need more raito noberu, because this stuff is addicting.
Here is more info on Arionrod (アリアンロッド・リプレイ(2)): Here is an Amazon link. It looks game related.

And "Mamoru-kun" may not be "Kage kara.." Here is the Japanese: 護くんに女神の祝福を! And this is the official website for it and here is an Amazon link.

why did that surprisingly hurt me in places i didn't even knew i had pain reception.

You would be happy t oknow that the anime follows the book almost to the word.

ZnT follows the novels not as close, but it is still good.

you should try both novels out.

Lol, sorry i didnt mean it that way. Suzumiya was an entracing series no doubt.
Hehe, I meant that since the anime was so good, i felt that I already know what the contents of the book were going to be about. With shakugan-no-shana, I get this sense that there is a great story trying to peek out from behind a so-so anime.

If someone tells me that the suzumiya novels have some juicy bits and suprises that are lacking in the anime version, I'll definitely give volume 1 a look

Otherwise I'll contiune my research into what to read next very soon.

ZnT volume 7 sucked me in and i was forced to read it in a marathon.

For what the anime covered (vol.1 + random short stories from 3, 5, and 6), they did a really good job with it. In many cases, the anime was even better than the novel due to the excellent scripting as well as superb audiovisuals.

Nevertheless, the anime has only covered a part of the overall series. Vol.4 (Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu), in particular, is probably the favorite volume for most of the fans of the series. It was vol.4 that finally exploited the full potential of the novel's supernatural settings, as well as drawing out the core of the settings for our main characters (Haruhi, Yuki, Mikuru, etc.).

If you thought the anime's main story (vol.1, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) was good, then you should definitely give vol.4 a read (while you're at it, vol.7 as well).

2) Shakugan no ShanaS
3) Maburabo~ Mottomotto Maid no Maki
4) Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu 4
5) Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo 8
6) Shin Fortune Quest 12
7) Arianrod Replay Rurge 2
8) Zero no Tsukaima 8
9) Ginban no Kaleidoscope 7
10) Suzumiya Haruhi no Fungai
Wow quite interesting, 9 of them are male oriented light novels (published under male oriented light novel labels), and the only light novel for females thats on the list is the first one (Maria-sama ga Miteru: Kamen no Actress, which is published under a female oriented light novel label).

Its exactly like how it is with the top 10 manga, most manga that will be on the top 10 will be male oriented (shounen or seinen) and a few are female oriented (shoujo or josei).

According to the publisher (Media Factory) volume 9 of the seinen light novel Zero no Tsukaima will be released on 25/9/2006

I'll post its cover when its available.
I'll also be adding them in my post in the Generic Discussion Thread (including the bigger image of the cover).

Okay, I'm sold. I'll definitely give volume one a shot if you recommend it.
For SF I have one overriding criteria: if it is believable science fiction (seikai no monshou), and not obvious junk-science(garasu no kantai) , I can enjoy it.

The reviews are decidely mixed. The reading junkies who love complex stories seem enthralled, while the casual readers seem overwhelmed. I guess I'll get my chance to find out where in the spectrum i fall.

It doesn't make an appearance again until vol.8 though, so I guess you can't blame the anime or manga for getting rid of it.

Think of the joy all us dirty little gits will have, to know the wonders of the novel, and see us all post to complain about all the stuff they missed out in the anime.

sounds fun, yes?

/Mod Edit: fixed link
KuroNeko are translating the novel as we speak. Check their site.

Withdrawal symptons? Ah, how I wished I continued my Japanese reading studies. All gone now. Waiting for someone to translate these novels up to Vol 8 is going to be awfully painful.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts on vol 8. Would you mind answering some questions about Vol 8?

- Thanks!
