For now there are 12 volumes released of this light novel series.

But I'll post what I'm up to in Volume 3... I'm not that far in to the to the book at all

how did the light novel end

wow, I didn't even know there was a thread for this one.
How did the novel end, uh. From volume 9 onward, the author proceed to completely reverse the informations we got before about the world, history of the world and about most of the main character.
It's very entertaining to follow due to the amount of astounding revelation (the initial setting was full of lies from a lot of origins, the government lied, lots of the main character either lied or were mistaken, and so on ) coming at you one after another in a quick succession. But because of this the question " how did the novel end " would be very long to answer because I would need to list all the things that were changed in between, or else just telling the ending will give you absolutely nothing, I'm afraid.

It would be even more useless since the anime removed anything pertaining to progress of the main plot line in the anime. Yes, EVERYTHING. They basically only kept arc plot. So any hints or foreshadowing of all the revelations in the second half of tje LN don't exist in the anime. So for an anime watcher any of those revelations wouldn't even make sense.
