We need to wait for season 3 to find out

It was stated as a backup measure in case she went on rampage like what'd happened 100 years ago.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

It hasn't really helped so far. Tsugumi did go on a rampage a few times, not obeying orders, and the pilot was helpless to do anything. Also, if she really rebelled, she could either eject the pilot or tentacle attack the pilot. It just did not seem to make sense, unless it was more to appease the population as a charade.

Loved the episode. I would agree with Thundra that the pilot is just for the illusion of control for the population.

That's exactly what it was for. Without spoiling anything, Ochiai didn't want the chimerae to be controllable.

They tried to give this season a finale vibe the first one didn't, and that's worrisome.

Can anyone spoil me about what Nagate and Izana were talking when Tsumugi overheard them?

Did they? They set up a shit-ton of unanswered questions, like: What kind of nasty shit is gonna go down, now that Sidonia has made orbit around the gas giant? What, exactly, is the mad scientist planning to do with that second chimaera? And since he's making a second chimaera, what's going to happen to Tsumugi? Is this the last we'll see of Benisuzume? For that matter, how many more of them do the Gauna have? What sort of magic juju was exchanged when Benisuzume tried to rape Nagate? (He demands that the Gauna stop making Hoshijiro copies before, and then acts like he thinks Hoshijiro's somewhere inside that most current copy afterwards.) For that matter, who will ultimately win Nagate's heart?

They just had him wax nostalgic a bit after getting the first medal anyone on Sidonia's gotten in a really long time; and then he goes right back to work. It's a setup for a third season if I've ever seen one, and I'm surprised they didn't announce one right then and there.

Oh well. I'm just waiting to binge this on Netflix when it pops up this weekend.

Compared to the first season, they did. It was a very different approach, as there was no cliffhanger this time, and the ending credits recapping scenes since the beginning while playing the opening screams "finale'. Same for the very last scene with the medal, which could be seen as a payoff.
There were lots of question with no answers in sight, sure, but this last episode pretty much ignored all of them, while the first season ended with a strong feeling of buildup for the second. Like a regular episode instead of a finale.
I think the difference is that they planned the first one knowing there would be a sequel, which wasn't the case this time, as there was no announcement yet.

What was a flaw in the first season now the pilot corps strength.

In the first season pilots saving each other was a death sentence.

Now here the Aces, Tanikaze and Tsumugi, rescues what is left of the recon team, it turn they were rescued by the rest of the pilot corps. There is that solidarity and camaraderie among pilots.

Given the dirty looks En, Ren and their sisters are giving Kunato I think they determined who was really at fault during that operation. Kunato was team leader that was utter unprofessional-ism and betrayal at his part.

Not that Kunato can try to redeem himself as he is a meat mech for a parasite.

In the first season, they didn't really have the tools for the job. They spent much of the first season fighting with weapons designed with the last war (which took place a hundred years before) in mind.

In the last season, the only way you could kill a Gauna was to poke it with a special pointy stick. Everything else just pissed them off. Also, the giant fighter-robots were a bit more fragile back then.

Now, they've encountered so many Gauna in such a short period of time that the piles of actual combat experience have dramatically reduced the turnaround time from R&D to operational, effective, weapons systems. So now, dramatic displays of epsirit de corps are no longer guarantees of horrible death.

Can anyone tell me what manga volume the anime ends with? I want to pick up the rest of the story, so I'd like to know what volume to start with. Thanks!

The director's cut of the finale is out on Netflix, and it is 9 minutes longer than the broadcast version. They add a ton of little moments to make the orbital bombardment more exciting and make the other scenes flow better, and they adapt a whole extra scene from the manga; worth watching even if you've seen the broadcast version already.

It totally is worth it to catch the Netflix version. In that version, the Gauna don't just act like mindless moths converging on Tanikaze and Tsumugi (some decide to go attack the Gardes in orbit.) Also, Tanikaze doesn't just stand there with his jaw hanging open the whole time, he mixes it up with the Gauna tentacle-to-giant robot sword.

And yes, there is a whole extra scene they animate. It is very briefly quite emotional, and then Tanikaze needs to put burn cream on a place a man should never have to put burn cream.

It does show how forgiving he is. (And Izana too.) And I don't mean about the burn. I know Tsumugi's a child, but what was she thinking?

Okay so like I finally got around to finishing both seasons and while the first one is sorta generic the second is actually p engaging what with the introduction of Tsumugi who for my money is one of the better characters of the series and like also had an adorable relationship with Nagate and Izana and probably one of the stronger dynamics in the series and also I didn't mind the shift to SoL 'cause it's all like the calm before the storm but then crap hits the fan and everyone's shooting lasers and swords like bam bam bam bam bam bam bam! but I kinda figured hijacked!Kunato actually had more ambitions than just saving the world and I was kinda right and that's prolly gonna be up for a 3rd season or film sequel along with Nagate and Izana's romance 'cause it's still up in the air 'cause maybe Tsumugi will finally perfect the human form but idk I'm just guessing but the problem is the story on a whole ended on a note that was all like 'this story ends but their battle continues' so I'm wondering how they're gonna continue from this point 'cause Nagate's character arc seems kinda done so anyway yeah this show was turned out to be p good and the finale was so awesome I was all like AHEM okay I think I'm done fangirling now.

Must...restrain.....manga spoilers.

Kidding. Anyway, I finished it too after an oddly long pause for me, and I have come to a conclusion.

Finished S2 on Netflix this past weekend. Love this entire series! I really hope they make a third season. I want to see what happens with the Chimerae, the multiple "Hoshijiro," and uncover more of the gauna's secrets, among other things.

One thing I was wondering about in the season finale: that giant gauna Izana and the other Garde pilot (forget his name) encountered on one of the floating rocks was never shown again after they escaped from it, so isn't it possible it's still alive down there? lol All the other gauna who attacked Nagate and the orbiting Garde units were destroyed, but we don't know for sure what happened to that huge humanoid gauna.
