Congrats on the increasing popularity in Japan! The upcoming official guide book even became Best Seller No. 1!
It's a shame the Western audience doesn't realize the quality of this anime, but well, they can continue hyping themselves with hype and miss the true gems.

Spoiler for ep5:

I think they did most of the interviews over the phone but the two this time were in person. Or at least that is what it sounded like.

BTW, the reason some characters have dead eyes (Toki, the new character at the end of ep5) are because they came from extinct/endangered animals. Apparently, this setting existed since the game was around.

We've now run out of OP characters but new Friends of the week keep coming, apparently. The Friends were once real animals. We've learned that before but it has never been stressed so much like in this episode.

The "professor" is what? A human, a very smart Friend, or the park's main computer?

This is unexpectedly interesting. I was not expecting the darker undertones of a post apocalyptic world underlying the cutesy park full of anthropomorphized animals. I wonder where this will go.

EP 1: 1.2 million views on NicoNico, twice as much as Konosuba (although I don't know if that's a fair comparison).

The future of the franchise may be decided when the Blu-rays of the series start releasing next month.
And call me a cynic or pessimist but if that success really translates into BD sales and they're going to make a second season, spin-off or what have you, it won't have the charm of the original. So I'm indifferent towards that possibility.

Well well, someone finally has some idea of what Bag-chan is. Well, Tsuchinoko had a guess as well, but she didn't feel like sharing it. Shoebill-chan seems more inclined to talk in a useful fashion.

Next week's episode is titled "Japari Library." So are they going to make it there at long last? Will all their (and our) questions be answered? Will Raccon ever catch up? Keep watching to find out!

Ep 06

The wisdom of the shoebill!

-_-

What is it with Japanese anime and shoebills anyway?

Anyhoo, kinda interesting episode, and I wonder what Racoon was holding there at the end with regards to Lucky-san? Hmmmm.

I searched for an image of a real shoebill and had a giggle. In a way, the anime's is pretty loyal to the original source and in another way, it is far better to look at.

Well, considering Kemono Friends got absolutely no hype from the start, I'm sure the sales will at least be higher than anyone expected.

Wait, have they been in other things? I actually had to look them up, because this was the first time I remember ever hearing of them.

It appears to be a feather like the one on our amnesiac protagonist's hat, which caused Lucky Beast to play a recording when he saw it.

They have. The most immediate that comes to mind is the currently airing Classicaloid.

One more thing, though I don't know if it affects the sales chart, but the anime is being sold as a book. It's an official guide book that happens to come with 2 episodes of the anime each. Which is why if you try to find it in the Rankings for Amazon, you will need to look at the Book section
https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/bestsell...ef=zg_bs_nav_0
And as you may expect, it's already sold out. And it seems there was a resupply, but its also sold out.

Also, I'm not sure how much profit goes to who, but the episodes on NicoDouga (which require payment to watch) have incredible number of views and comments.

Isn't first volume supposed to come out only in March though (according to its page)?

The typical way they're used is that they stand stock still staring at a character, until they either suddenly spread their wings (but don't fly away), or lift their bill, or let out a squawk. Even in Shirokuma Café, where all animals speak, the shoebill was quiet and just staring. (He was the editor of a magazine, and his human reporters magically understood what he wanted, just from where he positioned himself and what he stared at.)

Basically, anime shoebills are there to creepily stare at you. (As this episode of Kemono Friends demonstrated.)

Ah. Well, good to see that tradition is being upheld, then.

I don't think it's that much of a mystery. I'm reasonably sure that it's become popular because its cutesy, animal-girl theme park exterior seems to be hiding a dark, post-apocalyptic scenario that almost no-one in the series realizes due to their situations, in which our protagonist may be the last human alive.
