Well I never used my MAL either way. Or atleast updated or finish my list (only got up to 152 animes before I stopped). But I might have updated it to remember this Fall season... I hope it doesn't get hacked so I have to start all over..

I didn't realize people don't use it.

I love MAL. It's especially great for making lists of things I want to remember to watch on a rainy day, also if I want to remember exactly what episode I'm on if I'm taking a break from a series, or to look up a specific persons work portfolio to see if I want to watch other things by them, etc.

From what I've witnessed over at the forums there, it seems only the forums and user accounts have been attacked/tampered with in the recent incidents. I haven't heard of the hacker messing with people's lists so far, at least not yet.

MAL already f*cked up long time ago. I left MAL when too many 4chan addicts ruining the site, especially the forums. Its hard to start a good discussions without getting trolled.

You don't check clubs, do you? XD

Let's just say: random clubs get their "faces" replaced with a lot of GORE pics.

I think a lot of people are overreacting to this. The problem seemed to have been nipped in the butt quite quickly (I didn't even notice it myself) and it doesn't seem to have made any permanent damage.

Any site can get hacked if someone really wants to. This time it was MAL, but AS may be next. And even though the site staff may be well on their guards, they can't see everything and often, a problem can't be fixed until it pops up in the first place. IOW, you won't know about a security leak until you find it or it gets exploited.

My question is out of all websites on the internet, why did they choose to hack MAL?

You're right about that, I don't. No one was talking about clubs getting vandalized over at the Support and the CC section of their forums, so I didn't catch that. Or, when I posted what you quoted, the attacks haven't spread over to the clubs yet.

It looks like the problem there isn't quite over yet, this time, several forum threads (mostly new ones) have been deleted, including their own Forum Rules and Guidelines and some new threads in the clubs. Still, no sign of anyone's lists getting messed up, so no real reason to panic.

From what I've been able to learn, the culprit is a german hacker with the handle SSJMaster.

I don't think so, since not all of the newer threads were lost, and I didn't realize when it happened, but some of the other, much older threads also disappeared, including anime/manga series episode/chapter discussion threads, some of which I created (I'm sure it happened today, just not at what hour since I can remember seeing those episode/chapter discussion threads yesterday and the days before the hacking). Even a relatively old club I'm in lost all of its discussion threads.

Their Forum Rules and Guidelines thread isn't exactly a new thread either, and it's missing, including all announcements related to the hacking. I believe the hacker is randomly selecting threads to delete. Also, if a rollback happened, a recently locked thread we used to post in would be unlocked and have its posts reduced. Well, as long as the lists themselves aren't touched...

Yea. Hacker boy seems to be in the mood for deleting stuff this time.

Also, I had a friend request from a user "TrojanHorse" (characters in mixed uppercase-lowercase). Naturally, don't accept that friend request.

I saw that user post in one thread with a suspicious [spoiler] button signature. Don't click it either.
