Hi. A little update from me (the Index/Madoka crossover guy) to let people know I'm not dead or disinterested in my story. I've hit past the 10,000-word mark for Chapter 4, which means that the upcoming chapter will be more than half as long as the first three put together. The reason why it's taking so long is computer errors that only recently got fixed, plus somewhat of a snag in fic research. I will get Chapter 4 out before April ends though. Count on it.

Spoiler for A Certain Masked Detective, Chapter 1, Act 2:

Tainaka dropped his head and sighed as he pulled into the parking lot of a certain convenience store, passing a M-cut redhead in a long robe as he did.

“A cosplay magician?” Tarou wondered aloud as he disassembled his helmet while sitting upright.

“Give it a rest, Cosplay Biker!” Was the retort.

The intrepid detective just shrugged and dismounted. The rumbling of the gas compression engine died as the esper ceased contact with the machine. His pitch black gloves faded as well with Tarou giving more mental dismissals to his psychic various projections. It might seem impressive, but for a Matter Control esper-type, this like scratching one’s nose when it itches. You just do it without much thought.

He passed a honey-headed Tokiwadaian on his way in, paying no real heed to even her baggy knee socks and rolled skirt because she didn’t have much in the way of chestitude. And because she had that Judgement tag on her arm. That told him she was useless, since if Judgement was even half as competent as he, Tarou would not be so busy with mere errands.

“Oh man!!” He exclaimed as he passed the storekeeper. “Just when am I going to get a big case?!”

“Slow day?” The lady greeted softly as she watched the young man strolled towards the manga section.

“Yeah,” Tarou replied while searching for the weekly Shounen Jack. “I’m in a drought.”

“Ara ara,” she giggled. “You want anything else?”

“The usual donuts, plain sugar.” Tarou replied as he hefted the volume up for a browse.

“Yes, yes, one usual, coming right up.”

That gave Tarou some silence to sink catch up on the latest exploits of a pair of gamblers trying to be mangaka.

“Hi!”

Or so he had hoped.

“Not interested.”

Tarou replied to the girly voice without looking away from his book.

“Oh don’t be such a stranger, Tarou-kun!”

He chose to focus on the dog ears on the pages instead.

“Someone had been reading this book.”

“Don’t most people?” Said the newcomer to his left, leaning closer to make out what was Tainaka so interested in. Close enough for the boy to notice the pressed lines of sky-blue squares on white swaths of cloth, the bright colors of Academy City’s SkyFLEET Command. The pips on the collar declared her a Commander, 2nd from the top of a student-led transport organization that had just 5 ranks in total. His gaze drifted lower to find his manga, but found it blocked half by her valley of paradise. Tarou was tall for his age, and the girl shortish for a collegian, so her meat buns were not being shoved in his face. There was the beauty of it, too close and he’d not be able to see them after all. Uniformed babes like her knew how to extrude confidence while giving away very little, and that was kinda hot. Hot enough to make him feel a bit of warmth in his face even. But this Commander of a certain experimental skyship hounded him often enough for much of the thrill to have worn off.

Tainaka sniffed the corner of the weekly periodical in an attempt to get rid of her.

“It’s sweet. Fierce, even.” Tarou said as he completed his analysis. “A girl, upper class.”

His mind went back to the Tokiwadaian who had just left. Didn’t she smell like that, too?

“The great Detective Tainaka is hard at work, I see!” Reported the harasser in a playful rather than irritated manner.

Tarou then wheeled to face her. “What are you still doing here, Bomi?”

“I’ll be frank with you, Mister Tainaka,” the girl with a long dark mane said as she straightened the front of her uniform with a sharp tug. “I have a favour to ask of you.”

“The answer is no.”

Tainaka brushed past to pay for his donut then leave.

“Come again!” called that certain storekeeper.

“I’m not talking about that favour,” Commander Bomi marched after him. “I need your help later today.”

“This job’s for the G-Man?”

Tainaka replied while taking a bite out of the donut.

“You could say that,” Bomi affirmed. “We’re making a yellow priority transfer of research items from Block 47 to an outlying facility and we need more boots on the ground.”

"Why don't you get Judgement or Anti-Skill?"

"Anti-Skill only does Reds, and Judgement gave us only 2 officers." Kataru said.

"Doesn't help that the device doesn't work, so with Judgement busy with chasing more espers than usual, they thought we didn't need as much help as them."

“Heeeh...”

Tainaka gave off vague interest while munching away. Which was true, this was yet another testament to Judgement's uselessness.

“So...” Bomi did a twirl, then held out a hand to him.

“Will you become mine, Hero?”
“I refuse.”

Tainaka said without batting an eyelid.

Bomi dropped her head in disappointment, then looked back at him sheepishly.

“Just one mission?”

“Well, let’s see... No.”

Tainaka finished off the donut and mounted up, the bike rumbling to life as he willed gas cylinders into action.

“But we’re UNION! We’re not like the other labs in the city,” Bomi pleaded.

“You know my reasons, Bomi.”

The Commander sighed, and then righted herself.

“Alright, I concede. But I won’t give up just yet!” Bomi declared as she pulled out her Gekota phone.

“Commander Kataru to Enterprise. Chief, one to port up.”

And with a faint foosh, the skyship bridge officer disappeared through the 11th dimension, leaving Tarou mulling over the offer he had just been given.The young man looked up to the yellowing afternoon sky and caught sight of a hovering UFO slowly easing off away from the sun. Kataru Tsubomi was a good girl, Child Error like himself even. She just had not the luck of having a manifested power, and somehow believed that there was a research unit, this UNION thing, in Academy City that was free of the darkness they had emerged from.

As a principle, Tainaka stayed away from the authorities. They were all corrupt and self-serving, and could only feel sorry that the forever positive Tsubomi was probably being led around by a brain of a puppeteer suspended in a tank somewhere in the city.

But it is because of that that Tainaka felt a little responsible. He checked his phone, and true enough, the manipulative officer nicknamed Bomi had left him the coordinates and time of operation in a short message.

“You sneaky git, Bomi,” Tainaka snickered as he rode off towards District 7.

Sorry I couldn't resist punning Tsubomi's voice actress.

Its just a coincidence.

But no, like hell Tarou is going to be riding a flying dragon.

Tarou’s current design was inspired by Dragon Rider. In my fic, Tarou’s antics eventually garners the attention of cake-baking maniac and tycoon Kongou Kato (Mitsuko’s old man) and his butler Klaus, and with all that money attempt to replicate Tarou’s hero power and make more money off it. The original Steel Dragon is Tarou's invention, a super-bike with specs like Dragon Rider, but with a ridiculous number of accessories, like docking with Uiharu and cannon parts to become a forever-cooled railgun platform, or docking with Mitsuko and a VTOL for air superiority, or [a certain girl esper] and [a certain vehicle parts] to become [a certain function], you get the picture. Dragon Rider simply leaves off all the unnecessary stuff and improves on the bike and the Steel armor.

I stuck with the Dragon motif because it’s symbolic of the divide between Magic and Technology. The antagonistic “rider” of Kamen Tantei Steel is a mage named Masked Girl Soul, and her ultimate form is Soul Saint.

The Saint and the Dragon. See what I did there?

Its just that now, 2 years later, we have Wizard’s Doragon.

Interestingly enough, the donut vendor idea was first taken from Fresh Pretty Cure’s Kaoru which appeared around the time I was working on the original Kamen Tantei Skull. I discovered this based on a Kamen Rider Decade x Cure Happy xover I found on danbooru while searching for pics of Skull.

In that original, Toaru’s Kaoru was well, male and working at That Certain Convenience Store who sold excellent donuts, and would interact with the cast as they wander in and out of the shop. Tarou would ask for the donut of the day, he’d got random ones, and some of them would contain hints to his current crisis.

Now in the current iteration of Kamen Tantei Steel, I made Kaoru into A Certain Lady Storekeeper (voiced by Takahashi Chiaki, hence the ‘Ara ara ufufufu’ giggle) who also sold donuts. In this current iteration, Tarou asked for plain sugar in this episode but for the rest I was going for Donut of the Day again. This change however, now that you remind me, is a shout-out to Wizard that I clean forgot!

As the boy began to accelerate, a figure clad in plates as dark as the night walked to the edge of the roof of The Certain Convenience Store. Tainaka felt the same shiver as he had that morning and swerved sharply, tyres screeching in a power drift, his gas compression pistol pointed at the empty store roof. The detective lowered his weapon in puzzlement, searching his surroundings for the same bone-chilling metal he had sensed. Turning up empty, Tarou put it down to fatigue, replanted his personal weapon and rode off. As he left, the watcher, still standing right at the same spot, slowly shifted to follow Tainaka’s dust trail deeper into the city.

And the face of the watcher was nothing but a glowing circle on polished dark steel.

The plot thickens. Oh I must say, at this point he still can't henshin yet.


Speaking of that Kamen Tantei GIRLS idea, so far the list goes like:

No Hokago Kohi is a UNION-sponsored high school girl band that Tarou will encounter in 4 episodes time during the SSSPMA Open House arc. Taken altogether however, its essentially, that's SPHERE [Kazari, Mitsuko, Felli, Wakana] with added Hokago Tea Time [Mia, Ayane, Banri] and a Koshizumi Ami.

Imagine taking a fraction of your brain impulses that make-up your psyche. You basically run it through somewhere and it runs around there statically. Especially in another brain. You have an imprint of yourself somewhere else. Ofcourse you have to concentrate to maintain this. What happens is that there is a feedback where the imprinted brainwaves send back signals that occur where it is situated AKA the tagged person's brain.

Maybe I should remove tagging non-living things

How her secondary ability works is by taking control of the connection between the original and the imprint. She can use the imprint to take over the mind by forcing her psyche to dominate the imprinted person. Oppositely she can run the impulse patterns/thought processes in someone else's mind through the imprint and back to her own.

Imagine they are separate but still one being. Rikou's ability is negated because Tag Trace user is the imprint as well as the original. Tampering with the imprint only alerts the original.

Did you factor how the Queen would react to this? I usually depict her as an omniscient being toying with everything around her, and I don't think she'd appreciate someone with such a power infringing on her territory...

...which about covers the whole city. Even Haruue and the Child Errors are her pawns, or Rooks, Knights and Bishops at best. That's Tarou included, you'll see why soon enough.

Would just hearing about the ability get the queen's attention?

Tag Trace is very discrete about her ways. You have no idea when she tags you as all it takes is a touch. She's also gained enough experience with the ability so that her psyche is not detectable even by psychics who specialize in mental abilities. By all means she might just be a match for Mental Out. I once imagined a scenario where Tag Trace tagged Queen, while Queen took control of Tag Trace. The result was... a body switch like thing... though now that I think about it Tag Trace wins because the mind control works by Queen issuing commands, not her diving into someone else.

She makes it a point never to tell anyone about the secondary effect of her abilities. She either explains the primary ability, or she borrows an ability from someone she's tagged before. Unlike the level upper network, she is not borrowing personal realities so much as she is emulating it so all powers she borrows are fairly less effective, mostly 1 level lower. Then again she makes up for it by stealing calculation power so

But that's fine I guess. For me, I've characterized her as omniscient and having complete control over anything to do with the mind. But that's my interpretation. I think your's can work, just get to writing! :3

I forgot to say that a sufficiently strong psyche can beat out Tag Trace. Most likely Mental Out can beat Tag Trace when Tag Trace tries to dive into Queen.

The problem with this power is that it is an instinct-manipulating power and Humans are mostly rationale creatures so it will take prolong exposure to her power before she can mind control that said person.

Also this power is more or less gender-limited. Males has (much) higher probability of being affected than female (much lower chance).

Her Command is absolute and can not be resisted since the said person's mind will create an excuse/justification for by he should obey her command. At the worst case scenario: She can force the body into overriding the victim's control.(read: Overwriting Mental-Out's mind manipulation).

Has some level of enmity with the Queen (mostly one side since the Queen has never heard of her). Even if she has, what can a level 3 do against a level 5?

Ability to use sounds to manipulate others mind through the use of "sublime messages". Being sisters, it is no wonder that her ability is similar to Queen Bee, Earworm's ability affect human subconscious mind.

With that being said: Don't forget: humans are mostly rationale creatures who are capable of resisting such power. However, Earworm is capable of "grinding" such natural resistance...because her power can be recorded into music and distributed online, allowing others to listen and slowly losing their defense against her power.

The Queen has never seen this Esper as a threat since she has not gotten in her way yet.

Overwriting Mental Out is probably too powerful. Theoretically if two similar powers conflicted the more powerful one would probably win right? With mind control it would be more likely to overload the person and probably knock them out.

Queen Bee is called as such because her power worked like a real Queen bee(the insect). The pheromone basically hard-wired another person's body biologically into obeying her.

As such, her power is actually capable of turning another person's body into mindless zombie (forcing them to use only the basic function of their brain without accessing to their basic thought and decision making process).

Being hard-wired means also mind-manipulation has no effect on them since the Zombie "has no need to access their decision making process in their brain".

However, Misaki still have the ability of interference. By interfering the part of human's brain which control basic function such as walking, she can stop them all instantly.

This is why Queen Bee hate the Queen and Misaki can't be bothered with the level 3.

The "Subliminal message" is the actually the basic "sending certain signal to the brain" which all Telepathic is capable.

The brainwashing is a literal brainwashing... keep telling the person that he must obey her.

The intensity of the power is the duration which a person is exposed to the brainwashing part of the power. The longer means the said person is more likely to obey her command.

Miski's power work 100% (hence the reason why she has larger army) but her power have a chance of failing if she did not "prepare".

As for the ability to record it... remember well the limitations that that has. As for her reputation....*Cough*she is an Idol, she has a reputation for singing but other telepathic esper hate her song because they sub-consciously detected her power, the conflicting signals (her power + music) transformed her music into noise for other Telepathic Espers.

Also to justify why Level 0 Skill-out stay in Academy City despite of their bad treatment there: They can't get out or have difficulty trying to get out. (since the directors used her power to make them believe that Academy City is a paradise, a home for them)

Spoiler for A Certain Masked Detective Ch1 Act 3:

Block 47. Set in the heart of District 7, this 4 block, 74 storey tall, glass-encased complex was home to a handful of small laboratories derided by the others as a show horse. A perusement of the distributed pamphlets yielded an impressive spec list: A powerful quad-core supercomputer ran in the spine of each block that any of the occupants could access by voice command from any room; 8 holographic simulation halls excellent for experiments by reducing the sunk cost of equipment; environmental controls; office comforts; and a maid cafe.

“Oh yes, definitely the maid cafe.”

Tarou mused from his vantage point on a certain bridge crossing. And it got better. This complex was the crowning jewel of a group called Curriculum EXTRA. It is, Tarou would quote, “the bridge between the thinkers at Curriculum, the financial might of UNION, and the teachers on the ground.” It was created by combining the research laboratories formerly under direct UNION funding with the established Curriculum department. They were most concerned with the fact that almost 60% of the city is Level 0, and have been working to reduce that number. And when the International Union of Students took steps towards going beyond just producing good balance sheets and journals, EXTRA, with the help of many disillusioned scientists, worked towards improving the development of students, without forgetting that it is the students who must reap the most benefit.

It sounded so hippie that Tarou felt like he was already drinking the Kool-Aid just by reciting it from his photographic memory. There was just no way any of it was true. ‘Disillusioned scientist’ was already a DEFCON-5 oxymoron. It was more likely that the docking ring sitting on top of the complex over which Kataru’s little play ship hovered over was a staging area for rapid deployment of the Academy City Aerospace Force. A force that could win a war just by air superiority alone. That was much more believable than this G-Man spin.

He turned his attention back to down below. The late afternoon throng was beginning to appear as schools began to let out and students headed for the evening crams. Even so, he could spot the SkyFLEET officers dotting the crowd from a click away. Who else would wear bright red, yellow, or blue on white? Only space hippies.

The hippie of focus stood at the doorway of Block 47, observing her ‘away teams’ with arms crossed around her chest like a captain of a spacefaring organization from the 24th century who was lost in a remote part of the galaxy. Occasionally, someone in red would come up to her and point to a slate, to which then Commander Kataru would send that officer scurrying off in a different direction. Funny thing really, if the Enterprise – Tarou’s brain hurt at even the mention of the name – had teleporters, why would they need ‘boots on the ground’? His guess was that something was being delivered that exceeded the mass limits of those transporter officers. Hopefully, it was not because UNION was trying to save money – it was supposedly not-for-profit.

With that thought, he suddenly wheeled around again, and was confronted with vacancy, again. He had been sensing a lump of metal materializing behind him for almost the whole time he was there, but chose to ignore it, waiting for its move first. When none came, he picked his time, but again the illusion had vanished.

Tainaka frowned. Something had been messing with him all day, and the only thing out of the ordinary was this ‘operation’ SkyFLEET had put together. Just what the hell were they moving in the city?

“Whatever those hippies were smoking, I want none of it.”

His phone rang.

“Glad you could make it,” Tsubomi said.

“I’m just passing by,” Tarou scoffed as he cast a glance at the hovering UFO. “Remember that.”

There was that shimmer again. Tarou wheeled about, scanning the bridge he was on. No one, again.

“Bomi, what can your ship scan?”

“Pretty much anything, I think.”

“Could you check if anything picked up some obsidium the size of a person that’s teleporting around the area?”

There was a moment of silence.

“Nope, Ops didn’t find anything. Are you sure you’re not sensing my transporter chief’s moving things around?”

“Depends if you are moving obsidium through the 11th dimension.”

“That’s of course, every metal construct in Academy City has a bit of obsidium in it. Its even part of the alloy in batteries.”

Tainaka looked down at the Commander, now with her green Gekota phone to her face.

“How about... 47 kilograms of obsidium arranged into a suit-like frame?”
