Chuunibyou - DEPTH OF FIELD - BD/DVD shorts discussion

DEPTH OF FIELD ~A Play of Love and Hatred is the title to 7 shorts that will be packaged with the Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! BD/DVDs in Japan. The first short features a robot battle between Rikka and Dekomori, but there has been no details on whether this story will continue in future volumes.

Here are some screencaptures for the first "Phase" released on December 19, 2012: (caution, these are 1080x720 size screencaps)

The first short is directed/storyboarded by Tatsuya Ishihara (the supervisor for the show) and the animation director is Kazumi Ikeda (the chief animation director for the show). The two key animators are Noriyuki Kitanohara (ep 3/9 director) and Shinpei Sawa (also mecha designer).

Great mecha designs there. Wish, KyoAni would adapt the Muv-luv Trilogy into anime. That would be an epic day to see.

I expected something longer than the lite eps, but that's good anyway.
Well, the first Depth of Field was more like a brutal intro in that weird setting, and they sure went nuts on the mecha stuff.
It gave a lot of Zone of the Enders, Armored Core and Full Metal Panic vibes (THAT Lambda driver field ), and I wonder if they will dare add Mori Summer and Dark Flame Master to pack a messy battle royal afterwards.

To even watch the 1080p version on a laptop, we had to scale it to 1/4 and slow down the playback. This does give one longer to appreciate the shouting and posturing going on.

The opening reminds me of Ghost in the Shell, I tend to assume that's intentional, but I haven't watched enough other mecha shows to rule out some other stylistic source.

Yo, where's the Dark Flame Master? He's so freaking cool as hell, I mean the OAV's are cool and everything but no Jun Fukuyama to add more depth to the mix really just make them feel a little empty.

Dekimori and Rikka's fight looks promising, but needs the power of the Dark Flames added.

It seems to be like the Jintai shorts – one big story, told over separate episodes.

Looks promising, though.
