When you talk about taking some media from one file format to other it is calling remuxing. You don't actually convert the video or the audio, you just demultiplex it (extract the video and the audio from the file) and multiplex it (puts audio and video on a single file efficiently) on a different way.
I don't see any reason why you should re-mux things to avi, since mkv is a better container on almost every aspect. On linux, you can just use "ffmpeg -i file.mkv file.avi" on the console to re-mux the file. On windows... you can try AVIMux GUI. I can't explain how to use it, tough.
