It is the lure of the super black hole the allegedly exists there and like lemmings humans rush towards it. On a more serious note I guess going towards the centre means that they can hop from star to star, whilst travelling to another galaxy means that they need to deal with the issue of getting to it first. Earth is on the edge and I guess moving inwards might seem like a natural thing to do.

All Macross series after Macross II have yet to go forward enough in time enough to even give the possibility of Macross II's plot coming into play. I will still consider it a part of the correct universe as it was originally writen with that purpose in mind.

In the end though what does it matter what the affiliation is since it takes place 30 or 40 years after the current timeline.
Not true.
Macross II is a story extention on the Macross DYRL theatrical storyline, and not directly related to the original Macross TV timeline. Since DYRL is retelling of TV series but with diffrent plotlines, you can say there are two diffrent Macross continuity worlds, one following the TV series, and one spawned off the movie.

The movie is considered a movie in the TV world also, which is even more confusing.

This info about Macross II being an extention from the DYRL storyline is by the words of the director himself, from Animage and B-CLUB interviews. Furthermore, the official Macross continuity line given by Studio Nue excludes Macross II. And even furtuermore, in the Macross Plus extra video footage, they clearly and specifictly say that Macross II is a parallel universe. That's right, they actually say it's a parallel universe, outright. So unless you're saying that the creators of the series are lying, it obviously is a parallel universe.

I think after the staff and creators tell you that it's not part of their official continuity so many times in major publications over the course of 20 years, it's pretty safe to say it's not.

If you're still in doubt after reading this post, here's the quotes from wikipedia.

If you want to double check the facts, check out Animage November issue 1991, B-CLUB June issue 1992, and Macross Plus extras on DVD, LD, or VHS.

Wow, what a disappointing episode. Both the writing and direction are awful, and the combat choreography is stiff and uninteresting... Oops, I was thinking of a different show . I think that the first episode of Macross Frontier was fantastic:

-The opening narration was just awesome - I especially loved the diaspora pattern with the date in the background. That five second sequence is one of the best pieces of exposition I've ever come across.
- Sheryl is shaping up to be a very interesting character. I tend to dislike Alto's archetype, but I like what I see so far. It's still to early to determine what to make of Ranka so far.
- The scene with the pilots practicing their routines is an homage to Macross Plus, but it's also based on how real pilots and other athletes visualize their
- I like Ranka's cellphone. It shows a sense of visual style on the part of the creative staff, and it's fun. On a similar note, I like the fine attention to detail placed on mundane stuff like the way the cleaner robots get rid of soft drink cans. These, and the other bits of animation go a long way in making the setting come to life.
- The intermix of music, sound effect, and silence with the visuals is another very nice touch. Kanno Yoko is doing a great job so far.
- I had no idea that they were going to use Ai, Oboete Imasu Ka as the ED, and I really like the way they incorporated it.
- The one place where I think they could have improved on the episode would be to use Destroids instead of tanks as the colony defense force - it'd have been great to see updated versions of the Spartan or Tomahawk, especially since they're so iconic.

There's almost no similarity between the two shows, so why would there be even cause for comparing them?

That isn't correct. SDF Macross was supposed to have a 2-cour run (26 episodes), and it was probably going to end with the final battle for earth. The reason the creators extended it to 36 episodes was because it was much more popular than they had anticipated.

Given the legal hurdles that get in the way of any Macross license, it seems rather unlikely that any R1 company will pick up Macross Frontier (and it won't be for a lack of trying). Currently, there's no signs that Do You Remember Love, Flashback 2012, Macross Zero, and (especially) Macross 7 will show up in R1 land any time soon.

Macross II isn't part of the Macross universe - the fact that humanity hasn't yet moved beyond the solar system is the biggest giveaway.

The missiles and the Ghosts' guidance systems were being interfered with by the aliens - that's why Skull Squadron switched to using just their autocannons.

All you people who just got introduced to Macross with this episode should watch at least the original and Plus in the meantime. Aside from giving you some back story they're two awesome shows to watch. I'm personally going to watch the entire Franchise from Jan-March even though I already watched Macross this year again which would make my re watch of it next year my 6th viewing.

Of course, it was made for DYRL, imo nothing else comes close to Ai, Oboete Imasu Ka in terms of Macross insert songs.... best insert song ever.

Interesting, the way jamming that's 100% against missiles and AIs never, ever seems to interfere with a fighter's predictive gunsight.

And was it just me, or were the VF-17s organised in three-plane Vics at the beginning of the engagement? No wonder they got their heads handed to them after the merge...

That person is not an ATC, that person in the bubble (literally and note that this is the correct term for the enclosure) is the catapult operator. An ATC would be working on the bridge or CIC.

The hand signals issue is due to directions, if you were to give voice commands, you are giving them relative to your point of view not his. This is already an issue when you're giving commands to a person facing you, where your left is his right and vice versa. Even with walkie talkes, when we do crane operations and the operator can see us, we still use hand signals to relay the instructions. This problem is compounded in space with up and down.

2). The female Lt. who escorts Sheryl Norme is a Misa Hayase look alike.
3). The Chinese restaurant is decorated exactly like the "Little White Dragon" (The restaurant from SDF Macross that Minmai worked at.

5) When the episode ends with Alto in Gerwalk posed as he was and the enemy posed is a play on Hikaru's first close encounter with the Zentradai in SDF Macross.

theres more, i just can't remember... tired... lol

6. Michael's Group do 'hand flying' just like how Isamu did in Macross Plus
7. Vending machine wanders around and bugs people to buy juice. That's from the original series.

I actually didn't know or forgot this series was coming out. I saw it on the list this morning, downloaded it, and watched it after work. All I can say is.... meh. I'm also one of the elders who watched Robotech on TV 21 years ago, and then died and went to heaven after watching DYRL... and after that did the dying/heaven thing again with Macross Plus.

The other three series ranged from very disappointing (Mac2), boring but great graphics (Zero), or overly long (Mac 7, though I loved the music).

It's early to guess, but I'm think this one might be like Macross Zero. I'm not seeing the great formula which made SDF Macross, DYRL, and Mac Plus such great animes... interesting new giant robots, a good love triangle between realistic characters, and musical masterpieces. If y'all hadn't told me, I would not have guessed my favorite composer Yoko Kanno did the music for this... her work in Macross Plus was far more futuristic and awesome than what's been sung in this anime. I expect from Kanno totally different but rocks-kicking soundtracks like what we got with Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, and even her music for a dull video game called Napple Tale.

I hope I'm pleasantly surprised by the next episodes.

I don't think that is necessary, though I think it'd be nice of people to catch up. Then again, there isn't much of an option with the original Macross show on DVD since it is so pricey and the alternative is a huge lump download for those that didn't catch the original/can-understand-Japanese.

Good thing I caught it a LONG time ago so no problemo.

Speaking of Heroic Age, that was the last major sci-fi anime I was totally impressed by the first episode in the same epic scope as Macross Frontier. Replete with awesome soundtrack and epic action. That said, I still don't think ANY soundtrack this year really touches Heroic Age's anyway.

It's not just that scene either. The CG is done so extravagantly and without restraint, it's just a feast to watch. It's like watching an anime movie instead. Like I was saying before, I really wish this is a 40+ episode show with this kind of quality throughout. That is almost unfathomable to think of, but if that happens, just wow.

Sheryl to me, is the anti-Lacus. Lacus was almost doggedly trying to help others, Sheryl doggedly tries not to. I have a feeling she could turn it around as these heroines typically do. I won't mind though.

As for Alto, I always liked the pretty-boy heroes and it seems that Alto isn't exactly the permanent hotdog like Isamu in Macross Plus or a permanent stuckup pretty boy.

As for Ranka, I ADORE her. Anime like this always needs the naive, cute girl and her cute naivete was at level 100 for episode 1. I just wish she doesn't change that part about her throughout. That's what annoys me with a few mecha shows where the naive little girl grows into a full man by the end.

I don't think a Destroid would make sense in place that is probably least prone to open warfare such as a traveling colony though.

Well, one can always start with a crash course by watching DYRL. Then maybe after that, Macross Plus or go all the way with the original series up to Macross 7 if one has the time and money (or resources... whichever).

If there's going to be some sort of widely accepted canon for anime (ala the canon of Western Literature), I believe that Macross—at the very least, its first series—should be in there somewhere.

I'm not sure about that one. To me, Lacus's defining characteristic wasn't so much her desire to help others as the incredible talent for politics and leadership she concealed under that airhead pop-princess facade.

As for Sheryl... it seems a bit early to speculate on her motivations. All we know about her right now is that she's not inclined to play the hero. She gives the impression of having become rather world-weary and cynical, as opposed to being simply outright selfish; the contrast with Alto's more idealistic outlook is sharp. It'll be interesting to see where she goes from here.

Sure, Destroids are going to be bulky and high-maintenance compared to tanks. But this is Macross, after all - it just felt right when they used the Destroids in place of normal CIWS systems on the carrier in Macross Zero, despite the ridiculous impracticality of it all.

Macross 7 is a very polarizing series among Macross fans. Some love it, others hate it with a passion. Personally, I like it a lot, but going in you should know that the mecha action takes a back seat to the characters in this series. Lots of reused, and yet poorly animated, action sequences, and each episode repeats the same drama->attack->Basara formula, worse yet using the same song over and over until you're absolutely sick of it.

Macross Frontier seems to be putting much more of an emphasis on the action and mecha, and seems to have a much larger budget.

Also, you're more likely to want backstory before going in to Macross 7. While not necessary, it will fill you in on a lot of in-jokes, references, and at least two of the major characters were major characters in the original series and movie.

Before 7, I'd probably recommend the first Macross movie (Do You Remember Love?) followed by Macross Plus Movie Edition. The movie you can only get fansubbed these days, and the Macross Plus movie was going fairly cheap last I saw it.
