Well, can't blame you. I expected at least one guy on the team too. None so far though.

Maybe Yagami Ko requested an all-female team. You know, so that she could feel comfortable sleeping in the office all-the-time, often with her underwear visible.

Pure speculation there, as I'm not familiar with the source material for this.

I hope the explanation is this, or something fairly mundane/common sense like this. I hope it's not something really elaborate, or it could feel very contrived.

Anyway, pretty good first episode. It's a little too light and sugary for me at times, but it's nice overall. I like how focused it is, and the visuals are very good.

According to the info I've found, Hazuki (the director lady with the cat) only hires cute girls.

Well to be fair, it's not like all-female production teams are completely unprecedented or unfamiliar. The best example of this in real-life would of course be CLAMP, one of the most beloved and influential teams of mangaka in the history of the genre.

Obviously the show chose an all-female cast for the moe: but at the same time, I think some of the comments suggesting this is unrealistic, or entirely a contrivance for anime purposes, are a little bit off-base.

i am still not sure they would later show the harsh reality of being a game designer,

well considering Shirobako somehow portrays an anime studio accurately which includes both physical & mental health degradation, underpaid salaries, someone passed out from overwork, annoying sometimes bitchy clients, a surprise sudden change in deadlines along with schedule which messes up the planning thus no choice but pulling an all nighter with no breaks, & a director who was freaking imprisoned for days in the studio as he was forced to finish his job (to be fair he always seen trying to escape from his duties ), but still not sure that was all for the sake of humor.........

Actually the harsh reality is there in the background. There are Red Bull cans on the table, and I heard wearing just a panty while living in the office is reality(a male staff though). But by the kind of super-thick sugarcoat presentation in this show those things will not be the focus.

Exactly. Just because the RL VG industry is tough doesn't mean you have to depict it as such.

And just because a show is serious doesn't mean it has to be serious all the time.

Great job by the mangaka to show the dark side of the VG industry without being too cynical and dark about it, while keeping the whole story light-hearted.

Um, it's not like the author won't deal with these serious issues within the game industry. Maybe NEW GAME! will be all about the positive side of it with occasional parties and some lighthearted moments.

FYI the mangaka had worked in the game industry for about 3 years before and he's basing the story from his experience. It is stated in the Manga's first volume afterwords. I think he most likely worked in the art department. That's why most of the characters in the show are in the art department.

Good point there, but I wonder if the author will tackle other departments such as programming, storyboard, etc.?

At first I was laughing when I saw the Red Gull, but then I realized why they are there:

Her intake is comprised of all sorts of drinks, which I for one know that is definitely not an ideal way to go about getting ones nutrients

I watched the first episode while taking a break from work and man... someone put too much sugar on my coffee. Heart problem is one of the side effects of watching this show. I loved this series, it would be my chocolate on a sleep deprived day.

8am to 9pm... Jesus Christ.. and, extra cringe when the helicopter manager gives them a hard time over a small tea break, claiming they are 'on the clock'.

Makes me appreciate US laws when it comes to overtime.

Lets break it down here:
* 12 hour work shift + 1 hour lunch
* 1 hour average one-way commute
* 1 hour dinner
* 8 hours sleep
* No doubt she has to work Saturdays

She's basically the female equivalent of a salaryman whose been forced to dedicate 100% of their time to the company. Nice try Japan, but cute animes will not change my mind about how screwed up that is. They need heavy reforms to fix this destructive trend.

Even though I saw some news and information before on how brutal the work hours in Japan, I agree that it needs to be changed.

Remind me of this timetable I found on the net. I dunno if this is some outlier or a portrait of average salaryman. The point is: It's crazy.

I agree that the work environment in Japan is screwed up. I believe it is entrenched in the Japanese culture it will be really hard to change. It might take generations to "fix" that.

Actually the average workers are currently not working weekends. When crunch time comes around they are all asked if they are willing to do so: no one is forced.

Also, please be nicer to Ko. She was hardly "giving them a hard time" about their tea break, nor even telling them that it was a bad thing, simply telling them that they should finish up and return to work soon rather than get caught up in talking. That's part of her job. If she didn't at least keep an eye on that to some extent she'd be a failure as their manager. Given that she's stated to not only do more work than any of them, but also work more hours than any of them, I don't think it's anyone's place to judge her. Please don't equate her to whatever managers you may have had in the past: she's being pretty good with everyone.

As it so happens, I have heard things about the life of the average video game company employee in Japan that rates it just barely above outright slavery, so I'm not trying to excuse the reality. However, I don't see that that has to have a bearing here.

I found a lot of viewers are expecting a Manga Time Kirara Carat series to have the same tone as Shirobako. That's ludicrous.
