The first part was heavy in action, the second was just talking. But the action part was awesome and very well done. The OVA once again suffers from tedious reaction shots and lack of focus and impact for the special attacks.

In the OVA, the scenes dragged on a lot… Biscuit takes her time and walks slowly towards Bara. In the manga and Madhouse’s adaptation the transformation and attack were instantaneous and fast. Also, in the OVA she had a manly voice! And I don’t a masculine female voice; no… she had a male voice actor for this part! And yes, it makes things even more confusing by making you think Biscuit is actually a man who likes to hide as a little girl………..

Which kinda means I have to wait a while if I just wanna read the latest review.

Again, it's not like, killing me or anything. And I'm not sure what would solve the problem, other than scattering the review over several posts, but it's something I noticed.

And we’re finally done with Greed Island arc. Like last time with Yorknew arc, here’s the retrospective and rankings:

Originally, I didn’t think the arc was that hot the first time I’ve read it and didn’t think of Genthru that much. But going through it and taking a more detailed look at it, it’s a rather good plot and Genthru wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. If anything, he was one smart and manipulative villain with scary powers, and he had the honor to be the first major villain to be defeated by Gon in a real life and death battle with no rules.

Madhouse’s direction was rather good. At the beginning there were the same issues Yorknew arc had and that is omitting what the studio thought were unnecessary scenes. It did help fixing the pacing issue, but not always.

The first G.I OVA wasn’t that bad and it was closer to the manga than Madhouse. But the second OVA had a lot of problems: unnecessary changes, censorship, awkward animation, and the art… holy crap the art!! I don't know if you blame the new technologies used to make them, but I don't think that's an excuse to hire terrible artists!

With that out of the way let’s see how I ranked each episode and what the rating of the arc is:

Now... as a series as a whole, Nippon's adaptation wasn't that great. From faulty direction, bad writing to bad film masters. It's not the best representative for the manga. Now there were instances when it was more faithful to the manga than Madhouse, but they are few and badly executed. Some may argue the old series is better just for the soundtracks. Some tracks are nice, but this is not a musical. Soundtracks alone do not judge the whole series. Especially a shonen action series like this.

Madhouse sure played it safe at first and that made a lot of complaints, but as it progressed it proved from time to time that it can handle the manga just fine as long as you ignore the minor changes like gore censorship that doesn't affect the plot. It's not perfect, but it's better than what we had as the one and only HxH anime.

So in the end, I conclude that Madhouse is the better adaptation. It knew how to handle the series better helping the fact that it was able to research the whole series beforehand and doing the least amount of necessary changes as possible. It knew what the direction was and didn't go to one like for an example making it strictly comedic or strictly serious. It was funny when it needed to, serious when it needed to, tragic when it needed to, heartwarming when it needed to, etc.

up until this point, Madhouse shied away from any clue or mention about this guy which made us all wondering if they do plan to adapt the Chimera Ants arc. But here he is now. That’s Kite for you all. But Madhouse made some drastic changes… first off, Gon doesn’t remember Kite as he used to in the manga. And the flashback was too quick and not as in-depth as in the manga and they combined some dialogue with current timeline.



And sadly, this forces me to go back to episode 1 and look at Furuhashi’s point of view and what changes he made… but as a special bonus, I’ll take a look at the pilot version as well.

So in the old series, we get to see more of him… obviously…




The pilot gave us this scene based on the page spread of the first chapter

In the old series: Gon’s leg was wrapped by vines, but in the manga we don’t see that. Plus the wounds on his shoulder are not existent.

Now here’s the famous “Kite saves Gon” shot. Not so impressive in the old series. Madhouse didn’t give us that






The mother bear’s death is also different. In the manga, Kite decapitates her. In the old series he mdae a bloodless stab. In the pilot he slashes her like in the manga but he no decapitation. In Madhouse’s he seems like he decapitates her.

We don’t see the punch in the old series as directly as the manga. In the pilot it was a quick cut and in Madhouse’s it was a moving still frame





Kite doesn’t give Gon the anti-biotic in the old series and pilot. We did see him give it to Killua earlier

Also, Kite didn’t seem to realize who Gon’s father is or decided to wait a whole day before asking unlike the manga where he knew just by looking at Gon’s eyes and asked him at that moment

And that ends the long waited Kite’s Flashback… Nippon’s version was… I wouldn’t say terrible, but it was badly paced! All that filler and it’s even the first episode!! And Madhouse didn’t give it justice either. That was one of the weakest writing of a manga material in the whole series and it’s for a key character! So, if you want to see the flashback, the closest and probably the best version is the pilot. It matched the manga way better than the two TV adaptations.

And that was the first step to the Chimera Ants arc… what do I think of it? Honestly, it was a mess. From the change of bond between Gon and Kite, to the butchering of the manga flashback. I mean, those two are what we were looking forward the most since the first episode and instead we got filler flashbacks. Well, as I said earlier if you want the best adaptation of the flashback go to the original pilot and stay away from Nippon’s version.

I thought about that, but it's actually a pretty easy problem to solve. You just click on the post # on the top right of whatever episode comparison you want to look at. Will just load up that one post which helps in avoiding all the pictures loading on the one page.

Personally, I'd like to see the comparison continue even if it's just against the manga. Much as it's been interesting to see how it differs from the old series, the comparisons to the manga have been interesting as well. But, it's not my free time being used to do this .

I will be honest, 2011 was not needed. I was watched the 1999 version like it was the bible of anime. Nearly one of my favorite series right next to the show that started it all Yu Yu Hakusho. Actually if a show should get a HD remake it should be Yu Yu Hakusho. I will rewatch that over.

I find myself with this anime skipping most of the episode content to get down to the one thing I like about this anime, the fight scenes. Ooo boy the fight scenes.

The problem I had with this anime, until episode 40. Was the very colorful pallette. The 1999 version was a lot darker, and maybe that was a tehcnology limit. But I like much darker much grittier animes. And wish the 2011 would have kept to that atmosphere of HxH.

I will be honest, 2011 was not needed. I was watched the 1999 version like it was the bible of anime. Nearly one of my favorite series right next to the show that started it all Yu Yu Hakusho. Actually if a show should get a HD remake it should be Yu Yu Hakusho. I will rewatch that over.

I find myself with this anime skipping most of the episode content to get down to the one thing I like about this anime, the fight scenes. Ooo boy the fight scenes.

The problem I had with this anime, until episode 40. Was the very colorful pallette. The 1999 version was a lot darker, and maybe that was a tehcnology limit. But I like much darker much grittier animes. And wish the 2011 would have kept to that atmosphere of HxH.

So the one concrete critique you have about 2011 is the color palette, and everything else boild down to personal preference. Is that correct?

The best part here is that the color palette is a result of corrupted dvd's that were sent out of japan, and is not representative of the actual 99 version that aired there.

I am going to clarify a bit. When I say darker, I do not mean the color pallette in the 1999. I mean darker as in the way the anime was handled.

For example I have to find some cutscenes to explain what I am talking about. But the episode where Hisoka gets his card thrown into his shoulder blade.

I stictly remember in the '99 version the card had blood on it, the 2011 episode at least when I watched it had no blood.

I think the 2011 probably had that dark atmosphere that I was talking about better in the Phantom Troupe arch, which is my favorite arch.

The other thing were some of the things cut out. My Favorite fight scene of all time, especially in the first arch where they were learning to become Hunters, was Kurapica v.s. Hisoka. It just doesn't exist and they magically cut to Gon being injured. We don't even get to see Gon's fight only through a flashback, ooboy.

When I say darker I mean the atmosphere. The mood of the anime. I feel like this took on, a very 4kids approach to HxH, not as bad mind you. It's not as horrible as the abominaton of 4kids. But I like twisted anime, with dark moods.

The very few animes I watch that are light, are reverse harems its just treated better and those are guilty pleasures. And Gintama.

My entry anime was Akira, then it was Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, and then Ghost in the Shell.

From there I went to Technolyze, Serial Experiment Lain, Sci-Fi Harry, Mushishi, Mononoke, Japanese Classic Horror, Ghost Hound, Ghost Hunt, Jigoku Shoujo, etc.

I watch very dark, heavy animes. But sometimes a man has to watch something fun and light which is reserved for reverse harems generally because I like the relationship aspect better than normal harems. To many big boobs and submissive females. And Gintama.
