3) The author never really made the Saito x Louise official, so yes, any of the other couplings can happen.

Here are some detailed answers (mostly because I just love writing about them ).

Contains spoilers up to the recent volumes:

1. Saito first confessed to Louise way back in vol.6, during the little boat on the pond scene. However, Louise never responded. Their relationship remained somewhat awkward throughout the long war in vol.6 and 7. But Saito has been pretty open about his, er, love for Louise ever since they finally got back together at the end of vol.8 after the war.

As of the latest volume, Louise still hasn't responded to Saito's confession yet (or rather, she's still not even sure about her feelings). And she's determined to put her feelings aside and help Saito find his way home instead.

2. At what level?...
As close as it gets to being lovers, but still not lovers, I guess.

Saito and Louise shared quite a few intimate moments together, especially after they got back together in vol.8. But in the end, what we have is a tsundere master and a servant dog after all.

If you're just talking about physical contact level though, then "sleeping in the same bed while doing things that borderline on being adult contents" is about as far as they went.

3. With the way the novel is right now, Louise currently owns the majority of "Saito's love stock". With Siesta settling into a close but safe distance from Saito, and Henrietta being confronted by Louise in vol.9. It doesn't look like there will be much competition for the time being.

4. Saito managed to knock out enough commanders during the final battle to stall the Albion army, but he suffered mortal injuries in the process and collapsed. Derflinger then used the magic power it had absorbed during the battle to temporary manipulate Saito's unconscious body and "carried" him from the battlefield to a secluded forest, where he was discovered and nursed back to health by Tiffania (vol.8)

When Saito almost died, he lost his Gandalfr powers. For the majority of vol.8, Saito was trained by Agnes (captain of Henrietta's personal guard brigade, who was sent by Henrietta to look for Saito) in the art of sword combat as a regular person.

Saito eventually regained his powers when he renewed his contract with Louise.

5+6. I wish I could find time to keep doing them (although if I did, I would probably spend them on translating for Baka-tsuki's Zero project instead). But it's hard when your life is already occupied by work and school and volunteer job and other translation commitments (Negima). ^^;

What I dislike about the novel now is that if the author really makes Saito and Louise the 'only pairing', it'll take away ALOT of the fun then when he's being chased after by 3/4/5 girls...

(... Okay, maybe I'm just a tiny bit bias towards Siesta... Hope she gets a more important development. If not... Well, there's always the game =) ! )

Same as me then. I would simply love to see a Saito x Tabitha/charlotte couple together. They would look quite cute and sweet together.

Next would be Saito X hendrietta, followed by Saito x seista.

Too bad, anything other than Saito X louise is not very possible at the moment. He should listen more to his sword sometimes.

Who said that Saito's "love" had to be real. The author may pull out the classic, "compulsion" of being a familiar as a plot device that bind him to Louise. Could even use it as a justification for her doubts. Then again, that's some strong compulsion to willingly march to your death.

Everytime Saito ends up doing "funny things" with other girls, Louise would question his true intentions. "Does he really love me? If so, then why does he always flirt around with other girls?" She even tried to attribute his feelings to the power of the contract.

Saito, too, questioned Louise's true feelings for always avoiding his approaches. And as great of a guy he is, Saito has a big weakness called low self confidence. Once he has experienced rejection, he becomes dejected with himself, and with Louise as well. To recover, he tends to turn his attention to other things.

Unfortunately, for someone with high prides like Louise, seeing Saito ignoring her only makes her feel even more frustrated. What she doesn't realize is that all of this is caused by her own inability to be honest with her true feelings.

For us readers, this inexperienced love is where half the fun comes from. ^^

Slightly related to your questions, I'm pretty worry about whether Saito would still have a harem left at the end of vol 9, and vol 10 didn't seem to have any of that... This is of course, judging from the summaries- I'm at the mercy of the translator...

I love typing novel spoilers, but most people should probably avoid it unless they don't mind being spoiled. ^^;

1. The "70,000 army" really all began when the Tristan forces were practically on the doorsteps of Albion's capital, Londonium. The Tristan army was occupying the City of South Gotha preparing for the final attack when Cromwell's assistant (in reality though, Cromwell was only her puppet), Sheffield, led Waldo and the Fouque into a nearby mountain and used the water fairy's stone to cast a mind control magic of sorts into the city's water supply.

As the result, half of the Tristan army were affected by this water, and chaos followed the next day with Tristanians fighting each other. With all the top generals killed, the remaining forces had no choice but to retreat.

At the same time, as if they knew what's happening, the Albion forces that were bunkered down in Londonium suddenly moved out and began to give chase. So not only did Tristan lose half their army, the they ended up having to run from both the Albionians and their own soldiers (for a combined total of 70,000).

After Saito managed to stop the army and allowed the remaining friendly forces to escape, Galia's King Josef, who had remained neutral up until this point, suddenly sent in his military forces and attacked Londonium, which was completely defenseless at the time due to it's army being away. Galia quickly elimated Cromwell and took over Londonium, and with the water magic now worn off from the mind controlled Tristan forces, Albion had no choice but to surrender.

Galia claimed the sudden attack was a gesture of help for Tristan, and proposed that the remaining 3 powers: Tristan, Germania, and Galia, divide up and govern former Albion territories in joint after the war.

Henrietta, of course, was apprehensive. Josef is obviously plotting something, but it's true that Galia did help Tristan, and Tristan is only a tiny country compared to a superpower like Galia, so she had no choice but to accept his suggestions.

2. A masquerade ball named Sleipnir's Promenade was held in the magic academy in vol.9. One special aspect about the ball is the fact that participants are able to use a magic item called "Mirror of Truth" to change their appearances into "someone they admire the most". The ball has been traditionally held during the beginning of a new school term as a welcoming party for new students, as well as a chance for them to hone their social skills.

For many students, the ball is much less of a formal dance, but more of a fun event where friends would play "guess who?" games with each other.

Anyway, about your question. It began when Louise asked Saito to attend the ball, and promised "the continuation of what they were doing in Albion the other night" (referring to their little almost-18+ experience in bed when everyone stayed over in Tiffania's house after they were reunited).

Naturally ( ), Saito attended the party (not knowing about the magical transformation twist). But soon, he spotted "Louise". Saito approached her, and questioned if she was serious about what she said earlier. However, Saito soon noticed "Louise" was different from usual, she seemed so much more refined and shy. Saito wanted talk to her away from the crowd, so he led her into a corner behind the curtain shades. Saito scolded "Louise" and told her to not tease him with fake seductions anymore. "Louise" seemed confused, but apologized quietly. Unable to withstand her "cuteness", Saito attac... I mean kissed her.

When they finally seperated. Saito was shocked to find Henrietta in his arms. It turns out that "Louise" was Henrietta all along. For some reason, all the transformation magics have worn off even though the ball was not over yet.

Apparently, the person Henrietta admires happens to be Louise. Unlike herself, Louise has a pure heart and always held true to her ideals no matter what. That's why the magic transformed Henrietta into Louise.

Saito asked Henrietta why she came, and she responded by saying she came to see him. Now that the war has ended, the guilt she experienced from the aftermath and all the deaths has taken a toll on her. But as a queen, Henrietta knows she needs to remain strong for her people. Still, when she saw Saito's name on the list of deceased, her heart went cold. That's when she realized just how important he is to her, and why her heart aches evertime she thinks about him. Henrietta dreamed for a moment of rest. But the only person who's capable of giving her that feeling of security and warmth is... you guess it. Henrietta knows what she's doing is not appropriate, but that's her weakness, and a weakness she's only willing to show in front of Saito, even if it's only for a fleeting moment (why am I writing a summary in poetic words? ).

As she spoke, Henrietta was unable to hold back her tears. Seeing somone truly wanting to be with him from the bottom of her heart, Saito could not hold back, and they kissed again.

Just when Saito held onto Henrietta tightly as she kissed his neck, he saw peach-colored hairs from between the curtain gaps, and under those hair, a pair of auburn-colored eyes...

I'll leave it at at.

3. Serious competitors? Probably only (only?) Louise, Siesta, and Henrietta right now.
Possible future competitors might include Tabitha and Tiffania though.
Kirche has John already.

4. You can't give estimates for these kind of things...
At the very least, it won't end anytime soon, that's for sure. There's too much going on right now (especially in terms of developments behind the scenes) for it to end in 1 or 2 volumes.

5. You'll have to make do with this.

From what I've heard/read about vol 9 & 10's summary, what's the 'score/statis' on the harem now? I know about Saito and Louise's 'activities' , but has there been any development with the other girls? Or is it Louise all the way now...?

Well, I finally finished volume 10.
Lots of thoughts, but it was certainly an addicting volume this time as well.

Hehe, yes. I'm very much waiting to see what will happen next when they are reunited with Anreitta. She didn't make the "cover my country's ass" warnings to garia. And Aniesu gave them quite a serious and potintially lethal send-off. Speaking of aniesu, her reunion with corubeeru was a touching scene. I want to see what become of corubeeru, i guess it is up to anrietta how he was disposed of, since aniesu decided not to kill him. (her nemisis and savior combined)

Louise giving up her noble status and name was somewhat of a surprise. I'll be really surprised if she stayed that way though.

Yes! I finally have to give Ruizu respect- the fact that she could give up her katagaki and mibun like that. Finally, Im starting to like her character. I still cant stand the way she interacts with Saito. Its not fair to be bot horribly jealous, then alternatively extremely cold to him once he pays her attention. grr

About Tabasa, I guess the sides-story is pretty much critical reading. I would have enjoyed this novel much less without tabasa's backstory. As presented in this volume, I would think she's one dimensional, and quite at odds with her previous behavior. I guess seeing the whole picture makes it a much nicer story As i predicted, she has joined saito's harem Noboru even apologizes for it to an extent in his atogaki.

On the whole, this volume had very little in the way of progress between ruizu and saito. Instead, they took three steps backwards, and ended up where they started, or a bit worse than before. (her lording over him while he begs like a dog again, blech)

Saito is not the kind of person who would suggest assassinations, and it makes no sense for Galia to fall so easily after building Josef up for so long)

Lol, remember, they are not out of Garia yet.
I have a feeling is going to be a long ride to the border of Gerumania.
Josef may have been caught with his guard down, thinking noone could possible best his elf pet.
And 90% of the rescue belongs to Kyuruke and her social skills, crowd pleasing dances, and seduction prowess.

She might have feelings for Saito now, but we don't know about the harem thing yet.

Yamaguchi's explanation looked nothing like an apology to me. In fact, he referred to the characters as a representation of his desires and values, and joked that it's common sense for the main character to have relationships with all the girls. ^^;

Actually, I think this volume showed, for the first time, how Saito has completely fallen head over heels for Louise.

Their relationship before the war (vol.6), that is, before Saito's confession, was a lot more jagged. They conflicted with each other a lot during the war. They were apart for most of vol.8. And vol.9 featured little of Saito's monologues about Louise (a lot about Tiffania and Henrietta, on the other hand ^^; ). Vol.10, I think, was the first time Saito clearly expressed, through monologues and actions (especially like how he begged for a kiss in the end), just how much he's "addicted" to Louise.
