Japanese astronauts visit factory making 'Mobile Suit Gundam' models bound for space

SHIZUOKA – Astronauts Soichi Noguchi and Norishige Kanai on Wednesday visited a factory making models of humanoid robots from the anime series “Mobile Suit Gundam” that are slated to be launched into space.

The project is part of an effort by Tokyo 2020 Olympics organizers and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to boost spirits ahead of the games. In the project, a satellite carrying models of Gundam and Zaku, piloted by the main character from the series and his rival, will be launched into space.

Noguchi and Kanai visited the Bandai Hobby Center, which creates molds for the models, in the city of Shizuoka. They spoke with factory staff about special materials that can withstand the conditions in space, asking questions about what happens when radiation and ultraviolet rays hit the models.

“It’s like reliving a childhood dream,” Kanai, who played with Gundam models in his childhood, said after the visit. “It is a great project that is very Japanese.”

“I want to see how the models look in zero gravity,” Noguchi said.

If aliens found it someday, I wonder what they'll think of it .

Now that's.........interesting.....

Can't comment much on that. Like the supposed SEED movie, I'll believe it only when I see a trailer.

Legendary visual effects artist, futurist and industrial designer Syd Mead died Monday at age 86, his manager Roger Servick confirmed to Deadline. Mead had been battling lymphoma, Servick said.

I see the favorite of most people is my favorite: Gundam SEED, the story of Kira and Athrun spread over 50 episodes. Well, I couldn't see the rest, so obviously that is my favorite. ^^' I'm glad I've put my eyes only on the best from this series!

PS: I've watched it twice. Ah, young years...

^ Some of the overacting already made me cringe. Is that screaming guy supposed to be a teenager?

Anyway, let's hope that the show has less cringe, good story & hype battles.

That's kinda the point of the show: to see gunpla battles (via whatever medium they chose or the show).

No doubt they'll use CGI to make all the models do battles. My question is: how convincing can they make it?

Looks like the CG battles are decent, but he didn't talk too much about the characters.
