Oh pretty interesting, this def rates pretty high on my "must see" list.
I liked that trailer, with just the BGM playing leaves me wanting to see it more than usual.

surprisingly kickass movie. the shaky camera work and tense atmosphere really put it above average. plus they're not shy about killing off Marines, which always leads to better experiences. Aaron Eckhart does a good job as the lead, but the script is kind of not good... haha.

I suppose it's just a conceptual difference.
I'd rather see a movie starring a bunch of Jar heads than a bunch of LA condo residents. Holy shit! This movie was fucking incredible! Badass firefights. The Marines and the Aliens are all competent fighters. Great energy and interaction between the cast. This films like the ultimate action/scifi/war movie. No wonder the critics hate it Last edited by james0246; 2011-03-13 at 20:59. Reason: double post... |

The extreme level of the propoganda is a little hard to stomach at times (and just like any alien invasion film, it is extremely hard to stomach the inane reasons for the alien invasion), but some very good action sequences more than make up for lackluster characters (what were the character's names? Let's see, there was Black Marine, Blacker Marine, African Marine, Hot Latino Marine, Butt-Cleft Marine, and Southern Marine. I think there were a few more, but they left even less of an impression...) and a truly awful soundtrack (I can't emphasize enough how truly awful Brian Tyler's score is). C+ or 65/100.
That being said, did anyone see the SyFy version on Saturday night (Battle of Los Angeles )? I only caught the first 20 minutes or so, but those 20 minutes were some of the worst I had ever seen on SyFy... |

Then again, this is the genius network that thought wrestling on a Science Fiction channel was a good idea. Like much of cable programming, there's so much wasted potential on SyFy.

The film felt like a 2 hour commercial for joining the marines (kind of like the great fantasy recruitment ads from the early 90s). This isn't necessarily bad (what with the film being so much fun at times), but besides the lackluster segment with the LT doubting himself, and the later segment where Aaron Eckhart laments his fallen soldiers (which had horrendous dialogue that was too damn manipulative), the film goes out of its way to mythologize the Marine corp, turning its men and women from human beings to Saints and Angels (for example, one of the marines (was it Ne-Yo?) had a fiance that the film made a big deal out of, only to be quickly forgotten in the action. Did she evacuate? Did she die? Was the marine worried? Nothing is known and nothing is shown). Again, this isn't necessarily bad, I just felt B: LA was a little to blunt in its approach. But, to each their own. I liked the action, and I'll just focus on the action. That being said, Battle: Los Angeles opened to 36 million. Those are some good numbers.
