That's why I felt it was such a pity he couldn't join the science club as it was, or at least continue it as the science and shogi club. I'd have loved for him to get a true hobby, outside of shogi.

Focus and ability within a very narrow field has become a fiction hallmark of Asperger's and even autism (the savant in Rain Man) but the social disability that goes along with it, rarely shown clearly in such works of fiction has been co-opted to label people who have deep focus and are socially inept[1] rather than being truly unable to comprehend human behaviours and respond to them flexibly and appropriately with the syndrome.

[1] I have a Black Belt in the martial art of Faux Pas.
I'm sorry, but again I myself have Asperger and know others who have Asperger and I can tell you that not every person has it that severe. There are indeed people who can pick up on certain levels of cues, and Hina was far from subtle about her joy and later sadness. This is just a stereotype and one that hurts a lot of people as it encourages people to make untrue assumptions based on the diagnosis. Consider the number of people out there with Asperger who have families, friends, spouses who love them and get along great with them. It's a difficult thing for them to learn but they are able to learn, especially with people they care about and focus on. What you're suggesting is like saying any person with a learning disability will never make it past 2+2, or that having dyslexia means you can't make sense of any text at all anywhere. There are some whose disability makes them just a little slower, or who simply have a little more trouble getting through the text, and there are Aspies who have some degree of ability to understand people around them, even if it's intermittent and the reasoning doesn't always connect (for instance, a girl going crazy and clearly demonstrating happiness may clearly register as happy just as much as she later registers as sad when she's bawling, but the reason that this shift would occur may elude him). But again, as I said, hard work and effort can lead to improvement and part of the reason he doesn't appear as a "classic" Asperger is because he's worked his butt off trying to fit in and keep his place, a place built not on an ability to relate but an ability to play, and when he was given this new place he worked even harder still until he started to understand things. But even now he doesn't completely understand and has basically made it barely to the point where he tends to stop himself BEFORE his faux pas rather than after.

What a powerful scene:

This was probably one of the most important episodes of the season. Souya vs Rei really picked up and it shows the integrity of both players.

The shogi match itself was pretty tense. I love the focus on the details, body movements, expressions, and inner dialogues used to capitalize on the psychology of the game. Character chemisry between Souya and Rei is also strangely entertaining to watch. Considering they are both prodigies, it's interesting to see how they are protrayed as human characters.

Really liked the quality of the animation this week too.

Someone on Tumblr mentioned this show was taking three weeks off for the Winter Olympics. Has anyone else heard that?

This news item on the series website confirms this. Episode 16 airs on February 3 followed by a hiatus to accommodate olympics coverage on the same NHK channel. Episode 17 will be aired on March 3, after that three week break.

(Episode 15 will be broadcast 10 minutes earlier than the previous episodes and will start at 23:00. When the series resumes it will be at 23:00 as well)

I had forgotten about the Olympics. Sucks we're getting a break.

Souya was really fascinating in the latest episode. Really feels like he's an otherworldly being. He's apparently deaf, but the narration implies the origin of his condition might be psychological rather than physical. At least that's how I understood it.

It's a known effect of autism, auditory overload. It's not deafness per se but a limited ability to differentiate speech from everything else. One young man I know suffers from this among other effects of autism and he regularly wears a set of headphones, not to listen to anything but to dull down outside noises and reduce distractions. He tried wearing ear defenders but headphones are more socially acceptable in today's world.

In Souya's case it's being reimagined as a synaesthetic deal, replacing speech and dialogue with gestures and other methods of expressing himself (such as looking at the fare adjustment counter for example rather than telling Rei explicitly "It's over there".) Nicely done.

"Godlike" isn't how I'd describe autists in real life, usually they're just an annoyance to the neurotypicals. Souya is endearing, and in shougi circles I could even see people being envious of his way of life. A unique snowflake to whom I can't really ascribe any particular condition.

Wow. Thanks for that bit of wisdom. So he can't have our or similar conditions because he's not as annoying as you find the rest of us?

It's a possible interpretation, but I don't think the show will justify Souya's quirk in that way - at least not explicitly. It would be a romanticization, which the writer has done a pretty good job of avoiding up to this point.

We may recall that the Souya that Shimada faced, and which other players speak about, is a monstrous, overpowering "shogi demon." Very few would have been able to visit Souya's inner world before Rei and saw what he saw: a serene, silvery world, where moves flow like water droplets, natural and inevitable. None, I suspect, would have found it as Rei did; welcoming, comfortable...

We noticed Rei's restrained euphoria. What about Souya? Surely even his closest competitors and colleagues, even if they "get" him, would have been very different people from who he was. How happy was he to finally meet someone like Rei, someone so very much alike?

I recall when I was reading the manga wondering how it could possibly keep up, after the romantic conclusion to the emotionally intense Hina arc, and Umino-sensei promptly delivered this incredible portrait of the two's silent connection. SHAFT, in turn, gave it the color and sound it deserves (even if they were saving the budget on movement!). Absolutely spectacular episode.

Why did my heart suddenly went "kyun!" during those scenes between Rei and Souya?

I think someone else mentioned that that's kind of typical. Saying that a person has X condition locks things down, making it so that people will judge a lot. The claims back and forth her based simply on the suspicion that these two might be autistic is surely minor compared to the stuff people would say if it was confirmed. And there'd be no winning; as has been seen here, there are people who will insist that a person doesn't have X condition unless it's severe enough or has excessively specific traits or fits a stereotype. At the same time, the firm definition of the condition makes it so that the author can't just make up new symptoms that would be useful or fitting; even if those symptoms could occur people would still say "that's not X" and complain about realism. Far better to just have them show all the traits and deal with them without specification, and let the audience interpret it as they see fit. To me, it's a perfect fit and I'll stick with it, but I too don't expect Umino to constrict herself like that.

That's been changed to 23:05, on the same day 3/3.

I enjoyed learning more about Souya, but the scene with the sisters and Rei's reunion with Nikaido were amazing, in very different ways. Endearing and funny for the first, emotional and heart warming for the second.

I can't wait for the next episode, but unfortunately, I will have to.

Nikaido's return was great. He never was the type to let something like his illness keep him down and anytime spent in the hospital was just more time to practice and come up with new strategies. Rei laughing happily at having Nikaido back was a nice way to end the episode.

Now the 3 week break begins.

I don't recall Rei laughing that heartily in quite some time, if ever at all.
