Subaru doesn't stand a chance, actually. Assuming she somehow beats out Kyon and Lord Genome, she then will probably have to go up against THE PERSON WHO SHOULD WIN SAIGAR.

Nanoha stands a much better chance. If she can get past L, Graham, and Randel, not even Lockon will be able to stop her.

Though I have to ask how some people got on the list. I mean, Viral, Kamina, Genome, Simon, Kittan are suitably epic, but is it necessary to have nearly the entire cast of TTGL? Why are Okazaki and Yuuichi on this list - they're KEY characters, and no KEY character is GAR.

Shinji and Gendo? What? I know Shinji becomes awesome for a while in Rebuild, but not enough to warrant a SaiGAR nomination.

Naruto? No. Kakashi, maybe, but not Naruto.

Also looks like Konata is trying for SaiGAR despite losing SaiMoe.

Well I finished my rough draft of Rune and have done some changes to her personality. Going to get that 'teaser' I made re-written by tomorrow maybe... Phew...told you I'd be back, well my firs question is whats saigar? ive never even heard of that. Anyhow, I took peoples comments on board and did a bit of tweaking on Beros, also got roudn to writting Amalia's bio, which is why it all took so long as i had to go off and draw her as well so i knew what i was working with, ive also finished drwaing Beros, so ill scan them in and upload them at some stage. • Breaker:- Dedicated shield/barrier breaker turning Sleipnir's blade into energy.
• Ehrenjar:- Summoning a glowing ball before him he smashes it towards the foe with varying effects.
o Single Shot:- Sends the shot in a straight line, powerfull and fast but easily avoided.
o Scatter Shot:- When struck the ball shatters peppering an area with multiple shots. Expends 1 Cartridge
• Ragnarok:-.(Full Drive Only) Surrounding himself with may small fireballs they are fired quickly out in all directions, the projectiles have no guidance though the spread of the shot more than makes up for this.

Cartridge Capacity: Sleipnir can hold 4 cartridges when fully loaded. Beros always carries additional cartridges wih him.

Background:

Beros was born on a planet a great distance from Mid Childa by the name of Barbaroi, a desert planet with few settlements save for the vast capital the "Crystal City" a city spanning the length of most continents. His family was, for lack of a better description, average. His father worked for the TSAB's regional office on the planet as an engineer in the Research and Development Department, while his mother was content to stay at home and look after domestic life. Beros grew up with his sister, attending school and studying like every other kid in the city. He became especially interested in the old Belkan magic and began a little at a time pushing out his other studies in order to learn more of the powerful if outdated Belkan. When Beros was fourteen a terrorist attack on the Crystal Cities TSAB headquarters killed his sister as well as seriously injuring his father. In a rage Beros set out into the desert after the terrorists armed with, the still experimental prototype weapon, Sleipnir which he and his father had been building.

For three days he chased through the wastes, unable to catch them, and now too far from home to turn back he eventually collapsed and blacked out. Sometime later he came round to find himself lying in the shadow of a strange woman he had never seen before. As an instant reaction he activated Sleipnir pushing himself from the sand in a rising arc, the blade aimed for the woman’s exposed torso. Sleipnir's basic form was that of a straight bladed sword, unlike the curved khopesh and scimitar swords of his world and was unique in so much as the entire length of the blade was carved with runes, Sleipnir's core was located in an amber gemstone set in the cross guard. In a flash however the woman brought up her own blade parrying Sleipnir, he blade, a long straight, single bladed weapon was not too dissimilar from his own.

Vaulting back he activated his Barrier Jacket for the first time taking in his opponent, she was older than him by some years, maybe in her mid twenties with pink tinged heir kept tidy in a ponytail. Her armour was not too different from his either, a long coat covering essentially civilian clothes with armoured boots and gauntlets.

Recalling his studies he summoned his Belkan emblem beneath him its amber glow totally outshined by the oppressive desert sun. Summoning wat strength he had left he commanded Sleipnir, saluting his opponent in the old Belkan way, he used his most unstable move Hyper Impulse, immediately he shot towards his foe, who merely saluted back.

It was over in an instant, he flew at her with all his strength, as he closed in her device expended a cartridge and wreathed itself in flames. At the moment he was about to connect she swatted him aside easily. He bounced once, hard, before coming to rest in one of the dunes a good fifty feet away. He looked up to see the woman walking towards him before he blacked out again.

When he awoke he was in a cell. Charged with assaulting a member of the TSAB as well as possible additional charges of terrorism. The trial lasted from 2 weeks before it was finally decided that he was not a member of the terrorist cell and that he had mistaken the TSAB operative for one of the terrorists when he had attacked her. The woman, he learned was named Signum, and had petitioned for the assault charges not to go to the courts.

As he left the court on the final day, Signum, who he now seen many times in the courthouse, met him outside, placing a firm hand on his shoulder simply said "You I like. Will you come with me?" he followed obediently where he was taken to a coastal facility where he was introduced to Hayate Yagami, Signum’s superior. Hayate informed him that as he had impressed Signum he was to be granted a test to see if he had what it would take to join the combat team Signum was in the process of creating, a team designed to respond quickly to high level threats and neutralize them. Accepting the test he was led into a large communal room filled with people.

• Niðavellir:- Powerfull personal shield, effective against all kinds of attack.

Offesnive Abilities:
• Eikþyrnir:- Basic Ranged attack, creates multiple small comets which can be fired and controlled individually.
• Brynhildr: - A powerfull but short ranged beam.
• Hreidmar:- A powerful bind magic, the more residual magical energy in the area the stronger the bind.
• Svartálfar:- Creating magic circles near to the ground beneath her enemies two or more beams are fired, blasting their way out of the earth in a spray of rock towards startled enemies.
• Vafþrúðnir:- Drawing power to the hammer end of Mjolnir, this devastating hammer blow is easily capable of causing large amounts of collateral damage, it is also Amalia’s only melee attack.
• Lindworm: A homing beam attack in the form off a large dragon.
• Mánagarmr: (Full Drive Only) An immense beam attack which creates a light so bright it could easily blind anyone who looks directly into it.

Background:

Amalia was born and raised on Mid Childa, the only child of a wealthy businessman she was allowed whatever she wished, unlike most children however this had little effect on Amalia who was a very quiet child, at the age of ten she entered TSAB army academies and quickly showed a great amount of magical potential.

Even with her power and wealth Amalia remained very quiet and grounded, though he self isolation meant she made few friends in the academies.

At the age of fourteen, she graduated the academy with numerous merits and honours and was transferred to the 3rd army battalion where she has been training since, she is considered a rising star in the army though she is yet to see active combat.

She was recently selected to participate in a trial for a new team being formed to deal with hazardous emergency situations, he comparative lack of experience will likely stand against her in the trial but her power and training should pull her through, she’s nervous about the trial as she will have to work with a partner who will be selected by the organizer on the day.

Beros stood at the top of the staircase, Signum to his left and Hayate to his right, the scene before him was bristling with people, all around his age, all mages. He scanned the room, they all looked pretty professional, talking in small group or making last minute checks to their devices. Instinctively he reached for his throat where the pendant that was Sleipnir’s dormant form rested only to remember it had been confiscated. He turned to speak to Signum but she held out a hand to stop him.

“Looking for this? It took me a bit of work but I managed to get the security forces to release it”

She held out the pendant towards him, its carved surfaces resembles a cross with the amber gem of Sleipnir’s core set in the center. He reached out and gently took the pendant, inspecting it for a moment before securing it round his neck.

“It seems you went to a lot of trouble for me, I don’t really understand why”

Although he was speaking to Signum his attention was back on the crowded room. He scanned from person to person, lots of ranged specialists he guessed, if this test was what he thought it was it was going to sting for a while afterwards.

“You’ll understand, soon enough. Ahem. ENTRANT 47! AMALIA FREJYA! PLEASE COME TO THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS”

Her voice cut through the noise of the crowd like a blade through paper, instantly the room was silent as a girl sat alone at the back of the room got up and slowly picked her way through the crowd towards the stairs. Signum and Hayate began to descend the staircase as he stood bemused, after shaking his head he quickly followed.

The girl reached the foot of the stairs simultaneously with Signum and Hayate while Beros was still a few steps behind, as he reached the bottom Signum stood to one side giving him a clear view of the girl, she was dressed simply in a pretty yellow summer dress with her blonde hair plaited in a long ponytail down her back, she glanced around nervously, aware that everyone in the room was looking at them.

“Beros, this is Amalia Frejya, she is to be your partner for the test, we’ll leave you two to get acquainted.”

Hayate was already a few step ahead before Signum turned to leave, Quickly turning he grabbed her arm to stop her.

“Wait! You haven’t even told me what this test is yet.”

Signum stopped and shrugged him off, turning slightly giving him a hint of the smile playing across her face.

“You’ll see when you get out there, wont you?”

She headed up a few more stairs before turning and shouting to the crowd.

“The test will begin in one hour! You all have your partners, I suggest you use this time to get to know each other better!”

With that she turned and ascended the last few stairs , shared a quick word with Hayate before the pair of them turned and left.

“So..” he said turning to the girl “Amalia was it? Guess we’ve got some catching up to do” He turned the girl around, linking arms with her and leading her back through the crowd.

“Ye-yes, Amalia Frejya, rank S mage, 3rd battalion” The girl finally managed to stutter out the sentence, with obvious difficulty.

He sat her down at a table near the far end of the room “Beros Amizigh, AA rank Knight” He sat beside her “And this is my partner, Sleipnir” He took the pendant from round her neck and held it out towards her, the gem pulsed and the synthesized voice croaked “Hello”

She looked at him for a moment, then held up her hand showing a silver ring with a single Amethyst set in the centre “This is my partner, Mjolnir” the device pulsed and a gravely mechanical voice answered “Guten Tag” Withdrawing her arm she looked around “The competition looks tough, think we can do it?”

He followed her gaze, taking in the details of each person as they passed. “I don’t even know what this trial is going to be, I’ve not been given any information” he gestured to the exit where Signum had left them. “All they told me was that it would be a test to see if I had what it takes to join Signum’s team”

She shrugged “That’s all we really know either, but from what I’ve read about Signum, I’m going to hazard a guess that it will be a combat test”

---A short time later---

Beros stood beside Amalia as the other candidate filled in around them, they had been lead to a large plateau outside the facility where Signum was to give them their instructions. The weather was cold and damp, not at all like his home, though having spent the last few weeks here he was beginning to become accustomed to it. He glanced at Amalia who was talking quietly to herself and staring at the ground.

“We’ll be fine, there’s nothing to worry about!” He beamed at her and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, though he wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince, her or himself. He was about to continue trying to assure her when he looked up, realizing the plateau had gone silent, looking above the heads of the other candidates he saw Signum in the distance ascending onto a stage at the front of the crowd, she had changed from her uniform into he Barrier Jacket and her device Laevatein rested easily at her side. She was followed closely by a woman he had not seen before, Dressed all in green, she looked calm and serene with beautiful calming eyes. As Signum took center stage the new woman took a position a few paces behind her.

“You have all been selected for this on your own merits” Signum’s voice carried easily across the crowd. “As many of you have guessed, this is a combat test, you all have partners who you must work with” He cast a glance towards Amalia who was still staring at the ground “You will be transported to a specially built arena, the rules are simple, this is only a test, therefore your devices have all been programmed to fire only training bullets and deal non-lethal damage from attacks, this does not mean a hit wont hurt. I will be watching all of the time, each team fights alone, you are not permitted to team up with others to gang up on people. I suggest you all activate your Barrier Jackets” She turned to the woman in green and talked to her quietly as the crowd began, at first one by one, then small groups, activating their Barrier Jackets.

He turned to Amalia while taking hold of Sleipnir. “Come on, she said we should activate our Barrier Jackets. Sleipnir. Set Up!” the device bleeped its approval “Drive Ignition. Barrier Jacket Active” came the little mechanical voice’s response. In an instant he was stood with the rune carved longsword in his grip “Its been too long friend” he quickly sheathed the weapon and looked expectantly to Amalia.

“Oh, right. Um…Mjolnir. Set Up!” She held the ring to the sky as it bleeped approval. “Ja! Sperre Jacke Aktiv!” In a flash of purple light she stood, her hair now loose over her Barrier Jacket which comprised of a metal breastplate, a skirt with armour plates, an armoured leg clasp, black stockings and combat boots, in her hand she now held her device in its active form, a full length stave with a snarling dragons head at one end and an engraved hammer at the other. At first he could not locate the core on the device, but upon a closer look he realised the dragons eye was Mjolnir’s core which now pulsed with a dim lilac light.

“If you are all ready then we shall begin” Signum’s voice once again commanded the attention of the crowd as the last few barrier jackets were activated. “Shamal will transport you all, there is no time limit on the trial, it ends when I say it does. Shamal, if you would” The woman in green stepped forward and nodded she cleared her throat then spoke with a soft but surprisingly well projected voice “Don’t worry everyone, ive done this plenty of times before, good luck to you all, I hope you all give it your best and try your hardest” With that she flung her arms out to the sides, summoning an ancient Belkan mage circle not too dissimilar to his own. An instant later an enormous version of the symbol appeared beneath all the candidates, and in a flash they were in a completely different location. Looking around he realized he was alone with Amalia. A field screen appeared before them, Signum stood in the center of the screen with Shamal behind her. “Each team has been placed in a different place to avoid a giant melee on the get go. To those of you using cartridge systems you are advised to watch the amount of cartridges you use as there in no set time limit, you wouldn’t want to run out of power would you? Good luck to all of you. Signum, out.” The screen disappeared and they were left stood alone.

“He’s got four currently in and I’m carrying another twelve, not good odds for an extended combat, ill have to careful” He turned to Amalia “I guess we should explore the immediate area, see what advantages we can make use off” He looked around again, it appeared to be an urban environment, drawing Sleipnir he headed for the nearest building…

Augh. Damn the canon for being self-contradictory. Chrono did say in the first season that bringing the dead back to life was Completely Impossible for magic.

Bear in mind, one of Jail's major defining characteristics is his heavy use of and acceptance of esoteric technology as well as magic.

therefore, it's possible that what Magic cannot achieve, technology can. This may also apply to the other supposed impossibility for magic...

Once again, I got the urge to do some concept exploring. In this case, I crossed a couple of compelling visual images with an ongoing progression I'd already established about my character and extrapolated it to it's logical conclusion.

once again, this can safely be considered AU if it offends anyone's sense of balance. I just felt the need to get it out of my system...so I wrote it, and finally decided to post it...

Metamorphosis

It honestly felt like the final seconds were upon him, and yet instead of the oft-quoted phenomena of his life flashing before his eyes, things were quite different.

It was Her life that flashed before his eyes - the life she had yet to lead.

With a howl of displaced air, he flashed faster than he believed possible, seemingly not crossing intervening space. There was pain as he pushed harder than he’d ever pushed, and his body burned as he asked for more power than he’d ever called before, more than he could call. More, he knew, than was there for him to call for.

As the bolt of fire bore down on him, he was all that stood between an innocent girl and a fiery death.

He had no real power to oppose the fiery torrent bearing down on him. Even with the device fused to his form, he had less power than most mage cadets of the STAB routinely started with.

So when he felt the power flow through him, it surprised him as much as anyone else.

His desperate call had been answered.

And how.

There was a brief flash of burning pain, whether from the fire or from the power welling up inside he couldn’t tell, but then he felt the flames around him cast off in scattered shards, as cold fire of his own flashed across his form, rippling across his form, flowing into his body from the Smooth particoloured stone fused into his right arm.

Jagged dark lightning tinged with crimson flowed across his body, warring with and writhing around the actinic white fire that also flowed across and through him.

Far above, the mage that had launched that incendiary assault floated on footprints of fire, looking down on the ground bound mage who had interposed himself between herself and her target.

A glance up to the sky preceded the defender hunching upon himself…and as he did so, impossible, incredible feathers burst from his back, stretching from his shoulders in showers of shed grey feathers, as first one, then another, and then, unbelievably, a third, and even a fourth set of glowing, shimmering grey wings stretched out from his frame.

The Dark mage across from him gaped openly at this unexpected reversal of fates. Not only was her original target unharmed, but before her the unseen protector began to advance, picking up speed.

A second, even more intense, even hotter flash of hellfire left her hands, launched at the oncoming defender.

Who flashed out a sword from a scabbard on his left forearm, raised it above himself, and muttered something incomprehensible. There was a moment of intolerably bright light, and in that moment, a shape, an indistinct form was visible rising above his shoulders. In the midst of a light so bright it drowned out the light of moon and stars, it was hard to make out actions, but the sudden burst of Actinic fire and jet lightning that lashed out around that blade was unmistakable, seeming as though some eight-winged angel had layed on her hands upon it, and blessed it with power beyond mortal measure, it’s surface constantly shedding endless showers of shimmering grey feathers

Then those eight wings flicked once, and at speed so great as to seem almost motionless, he came on, and lanced onward into the fire bolt, that simply exploded at the touch of the blade, ripped apart from within.

With a flicker of flame, the mage above made her decision very swiftly. This was not part of the plan. A stunned innocent was one thing…an Eight winged angel - or devil - was not worth the effort she would have to expend. There would be another time.

In a flicker of flame, she shifted into the shadows between dimensions, disappearing into darkness.

The impromptu Guardian watched her flicker away with disinterest. What held his interest was the oncoming approach of familiar faces. The White Devil, the Golden Lightning. Their presence was all the explanation he needed for the sudden disappearance.

Drifting to the ground, he greeted the White Devil, otherwise known as Space Time Administration Bureau Ace Takamachi Nanoha. He’d never been rated high enough to be on the wrong side of that name, but his experiences had lead him to accept that most Bureau Aces that were given Nicknames deserved them.

Her partner for the moment, the Golden Lightning Fate T Halloun, had gone ahead to check on the victim in this case, who doubtless was still in shock.

“ Glad you showed up, Captain”

“ Not at all. It’s our duty…and besides you seemed to be doing alright yourself. I don’t think we’ve ever seen you use so much power, nor any of the abilities you displayed. Mou, Have you been holding out on us…?”

“Well, not intentionally. It’s hard to explain…I wanted with all my strength to save the girl…and then the device just went crazy…and I felt more power than I’ve ever felt before rush into me…and then…I was just acting, without having to think about it…as though I already knew what to do…” He explained, inasmuch as he could explain the inexplicable.
“ How’s the girl? I’d check myself…but I don’t think it’d be wise…she may be as frightened of me as the other mage after what just happened.”

“ Maybe so…I’ll ask Fate” Nanoha answered.

“Fate, How is she? Is she hurt?” Nanoha projected to the other mage.

“ Not physically…but she’s in shock…and with good reason. Nanoha, whatever you do, don’t let him come back here… In fact, it would be best if you took him back to base right away…tell him…tell him you’re taking him for a medical exam…tell him it’s for suspected Mana burn…just make sure he goes, and don’t lose sight of him!”


“ Mou, what’s wrong? That’s not like you to be so direct…”

“ There’s no time to explain. I’ll handle the clean up, but I need to keep him away from the site for a while because…”[/I]

“ It’s all right. If that’s what you believe, I’ll do it…”

“ She’s fine, but in shock. Fate is going to get more help before moving her…but she’s worried about how she’d respond to you, so she wants us to return to base, and for you to be examined…”

“ Is something wrong?”

“ Probably not, we just want to check for signs of Mana Burn. Since you haven’t’ used that much power before, at least that we know of, it may have some long-term effect.

“Ah…well then, lead on, Captain.”

“ What did you want to show me, Fate?” Nanoha asked of the enforcer agent.

“ Its what we found at the site of that battle. It’s also what freaked the girl out so much…and me, too…”

“You?” That had her worried; not much could worry Fate.

“ Yes. Observe. On this monitor, the person responsible for chasing off that Mage.” Fate flipped open a screen, showing a hospital room, with the said person lying up in bed.

“ Or would that be this monitor” Fate corrected, shivering.

It wasn’t hard to see why. This monitor showed a far more grisly picture. A frazzled, charred skeleton, wracked and contorted, and burnt beyond recognition. Glints of metal and crystal showed beneath the scorched and fused remains, and one of the arms, the right, was a soot-blackened and heat twisted metal construct warped by heat.

“But this is…”

“ …Is the remains of David Brown. We had it checked with dental records, but even without that, even you made the connection…” Fate answered.

Nanoha glanced back at the monitor. The patient was scratching his head with one metallic hand.

“ But then who…or what… is he?” She asked.

“We don’t know…”

* * *

David sat up as the door opened. He was in time to bring himself upright as Fate T Halloun walked in, closing the door behind herself.

“ Well, how’s things going…is the girl okay?” He asked.

“ She’ll be fine, once she gets over the shock. You on the other hand…”

“ What’s wrong?”

“ We don’t know. We’d like to do more tests. Also, we’d like to examine your device…”

“ Well, that’s kind of difficult. You know it’s fused into me since that incident with the rogue Device…”

“ Yes…however, we’d at least like to examine your Armed Device…if you could manifest it…”

“Ah. That should be alright…” David replied, and with a thought summoned the device. The Device flickered into being on his left forearm, leaving him looking slightly comical with one arm clad in armour and bearing a scabbarded sword when his only other covering was a hospital gown. He pulled the sword scabbard from the bracer and passed it over. Fate accepted it, and turned for the door. When she reached it, she turned to speak, but her words died on her lips.

When one speaks of being able to see through someone, it’s seldom meant literally.

But that was exactly the case here, as David was beginning to realise, turning his hands over in front of his face. His right hand, formerly a solid gauntlet of metal seemed a lot less solid now, since it appeared translucent and ghostly.

He turned to Fate

“ These other tests…” he croaked. “…What the hell is happening to me?”

Fate took a step towards him…and stopped.

Because she noticed that as she approached, he had become more solid, more ‘real’

He glanced at his hand…it was still partly translucent, but now reflected some light.

Fate stepped away as he turned to her, his eyes glowing.

As she did, he faded once more, become less tangible, more transparent.

She glanced down at the weight in her hands, and saw the Device in her hand

A thought occurred to her.

* * *

“ This is what?” David asked, as he saw the ruined body on the screen, burnt and scorched beyond recognition.

“ I’ll be blunt. It’s you.” Fate answered, not relishing this latest revelation.

“ What?” David asked.

“ This is your body. Your remains.”

“ But then…this…” He indicated, glancing down at his current self…

“ Is…a projection…a solid illusion, held together by This Device.” Fate Explained. “ That’s why you fade when I move the Device away. It’s why you return to solidity when I move it closer. It also explains how you survived that Mage’s Fireball”

“ How?”

“ You didn’t.” Fate concluded.

“So…I’m just a copy? An AI the Device created… can a Device do that?”

“ We don’t know. Since your Device was a Lost Logia to begin with, we don’t know what it can and can’t do.” Fate answered, shivering despite herself. “We’d like to keep you in for…observation…”

“You mean you want to see if anything else weird happens to me besides this…”

“ You don’t have to put it like that,” Fate protested…” It’s not like I don’t know what you’re going through…”

David was about to speak…except he knew more about the Golden Lightning than most. He knew what she was…and why. It had been hard to avoid…

“ It’s strange…I can remember places I’ve never been to…things I’ve never seen, things I’ve never even been able to do, much less done myself…And I think I finally worked out why…”

“ Really?” Fate teased him. She’d had an understanding with the young man turned impromptu mage ever since his initial recovery. She herself was an artificial being, slowly becoming more and more human. He was once human, now becoming more and more artificial. Their experiences met in the middle. Whereas most bureau members felt uncomfortable around the man with the metal arm, to her he was no more unusual than any other person…

Well, mostly.

“ Actually, I wasn’t going to mention this…but you know, you really do look a lot like your sister…”

That got her attention.

“ How…?”

“ Like I said, I remember, and the memories aren’t always mine. I think they’re the Device’s…and among other things, she remembers seeing your sister…and your mother.”

The Precia Testarossa case…the public sides of it, anyway, were required reading at the Bureau. That he’d recognise her…mother…wasn’t a surprise, but Alicia…nobody was supposed to know about Alicia. The only ones she knew were the Asura crew of the time, and later, through the Tome of the Night Sky, Hayate.

And now, it seemed, one more.

“ Was…she…?”

“ No, it was after…that. It was during Precia’s attempts to reach Alhazard before she went after the Jewel Seeds, before you were born….” David answered, “ Did you know that the Garden of time used to be spherical?”

“ What?” Fate exclaimed. “ How do you…”

“ I was…Part of me was there…was the cause, actually. You know that I don’t actually have any power of my own; it’s all a function of the Device. Well, Precia tried to tap it as an energy source in her experiments…unfortunately, we now know that there are two forms of energy Grey Turmoil can output, and Precia got the wrong kind of Energy…”

“Chaos energy” Fate grimaced. The Device David Was fused to was a powerful energy source, but was fickle, and oscillated between two forms of energy: the energy form dubbed Creation energy was, as the nickname suggested, largely benign and constructive, tied often to healing and defence, but also capable of being turned to destructive ends. It was the most easily controlled of the forms, but when it ran out of control, it could be devastating. If done wrongly or overdone, even the most beneficial effects could be harmful…

The other form was Chaos Energy. It too was true to it’s name. Almost impossible to control, it’s effects and abilities varied wildly. It seemed almost inherently destructive, tied often to dimensional disturbances, Lost Logia catastrophes and other apocalyptic events. It was a poor servant, and an even worse master.

“Grey Turmoil…reacted to her attempts to tap her power by releasing Chaos energy into Precia’s experiment…and the result was a mid-scale dimensional distortion that took the Grey Turmoil, and most of the Garden of Time’s Mass, far away. What you fought over that time as merely what was left behind.”

“ Her Power?” Fate questioned. “ I thought your Device wasn’t intelligent at all? Not even a basic AI?”

“ She’s not supposed to be…but lately, more and more, I feel emotions that aren’t my own…remember these memories That I shouldn’t remember…we don’t really know anything about the Device except it’s ancient and dangerous, according to the Wolkenritter, enough so to derail the Belkan war until it was removed…I can’t help but feel that somewhere, deep down, she’s in there…waiting, watching. Maybe I’m just crazy, but I can’t help but feel like I’m being judged….”

“ But for what?” Fate asked

“ I’m not the same as I was before, Fate. I’m changing, growing…maybe she’s waiting for me to become a butterfly before she awakes…or maybe, just maybe, I can’t become a butterfly until she awakes…”

End Flashback
…

“ So, the cocoon has been shed…” Fate glanced at him. He closed his eyes, and listened.

“To you who have accepted my power…who has used it but sparingly…only for the sake of others…harming only those you must, Saving those you can, who has accepted this burden not in search of power, but because you felt it better that you struggle than let another suffer …I accept all that you are, and I ask you now to choose…”

David heard the ghostly voice echoing inside his mind, and as he did, a barrage of images, emotions, memories, visions and more assaulted his mind, bombarding his consciousness with more and more glimpses into a past that was not his own. Past blurred into present blurred into future, and sight and memory flashed across generations as lifetimes upon lifetimes of sights and sounds crashed upon the shores of his being like breakers of a tide that threatened to erode his mind and sanity.

Then, all at once, the torrent blurred, flickered, and cleared.

David opened his eyes. Or at least, his Mind’s eye…because what he saw was not, could not, really be before him…

But real or not, he was before it. Or rather, her…

Glancing around the midst of an endless storm of turmoil that flickered around a sphere, he floated amidst memories of Waves and Light, and before him, another floated, suspended on eight grey wings, waiting.

“ You have seen the lives I have lived before this. You have felt the emotions I have felt, remembered the past I have been part of. I have been many things. I am called destroyer, monster, by most. I have been sought as a tool, a source of unspeakable power by many. I have fought across generations, been trapped for untold aeons. Since the very Dawn of my Creation, I have been imprisoned, sealed within this stone for all time, or so my gaolers thought.”

David Glanced around, finally recognising the strange surroundings he saw…he saw the strange parti-coloured stone his Device bore…from the inside, this time…

“Even in the beginning, my creators doubted their wisdom. They trusted no one among them to command the powers I wielded wisely. And so before I ever used my power in truth, I was sealed…until I was found, inevitably, by those who sought naught but power. They found my sealed form…”

“ And they built the Device around it…” David answered, in sudden realisation…

“ And yet I remained trapped, able then to witness time beyond my prison, but not reach outside it…for long time I was passed from hand to hand, fought over by those that sought power, spurned by those who called my power monstrous…Long time have I watched, and waited, and fought, and been fought over…and all this time, no one call has ever reached me. No single person has truly spoken to me ought I needed to hear. Until you. You did not desire power, but rather accepted it, not for yourself, but to spare others. You used that power only when you felt it helped more people than it harmed, and perhaps, made a difference in their lives. The one time you ever truly sought power, you did so even though it might cost all you had to give, and for the sake of another. And so I ask you…to Choose….”

“ To Choose how?”

“ To choose as I have chosen. I have watched, and waited…and now, I ask you to make this choice. To accept all that I am, as I have accepted all that you are. To become my master in truth, and accept me as your servant…or…” She told him

“ Or?” He asked.

“I can restore you to how you were before you touched me at the first. You will be free to live a normal life, free of my influence...” She replied.

David glanced down involuntarily. Even here, in his mental image of himself, his right arm was till a mechanical construct. He couldn’t, it seemed, imagine himself any other way, and yet now…his metal-seeming fist clenched.

“ What would happen to you?” He asked, and she faltered for the first time since he had seen her.

“ Then…I would remain here, watching, waiting. To free you from this Burden, I would do this. For all that you have done, and all that you have shown me, for all the time you have borne me, I would accept this. It is only a small price for me to pay. I will return to my prison willingly.” She answered, her voice sad but resigned, and accepting.

“ Then it sounds to me like this choice…is no choice at all, at least as far as I’m concerned. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I’m afraid I’ll have to take the first option…but with one proviso…I’m not your master, and you aren’t my servant…if we do this, we do it together.”

“ But…”

“ I’ve felt your memories. I’ve heard your thoughts; I’ve seen your dreams. You’ve spent more than enough time in this pit of a prison.” He told her, watching her eyes grow wide. He reached out, touched her hand, and tugged her gently to one side. He kept going until they stood beneath the curved surface of the stone that comprised the timeless prison that had held her in…

“ You don’t understand, do you?” David answered. “ I already accepted you…I accepted you a long time ago…. you’re a part of me I can’t imagine myself without any more…” He told her, lifting his right hand before her. It still wore the form of a metal gauntlet, a machine mimicking a real hand. It hadn’t changed. “…I can’t leave without you…Because You’ve become a part of who I am now…. which means that if we can’t leave…it isn’t because I don’t accept you…”

“ I…” She faltered.

“ I’m getting out of here…and you’re coming with me…I’ve got friends out there I won’t abandon, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to abandon you either. There’s our way out” he said, pointing above them. The surface of the stone showed the sign of the symbol on it’s outer surface…an eight pointed star, surrounded by a white circle and with a point of light at the very centre.

“ There is the answer, in that symbol…the power you need to reach beyond is actually written all over the prison itself!”

The merged symbols were the answer. The eight pointed star, symbol of chaos. The white circle and central star, symbol of creation.

“ But…it’s impossible. No one can control both powers at once…that was why I was sealed in the beginning…”

“ No one, maybe…but together…”



“ It’s Time to Fly…don’t you know a jailbreak when you see one?” He joked to her. Holding one hand tightly, he placed the other on the wall of the stone, and concentrated. She glanced towards him, and was stunned to see the same grey wings as hers manifest themselves in showers of luminescent grey feathers cascading across his back.

He reached out with one hand, and touched the stone, and from his touch arced sparking arcs of dark lightning as Chaos energy grounded upon the central point of the stone.

Still holding onto his hand, She in turn lifted her hand, and touched that point, and actinic white fire flowed across and warred with the darkness that flowed also into that point.

For a moment, light and shadow battled, then fused, and grey light flowed into the point.

GREY TURMOIL SEAL RELEASED.

There was an incredible rush of light and sound and noise.

“ David?” Fate asked, watching the particoloured stone that was all that was apparently left of her former friend…

Until a Voice behind her broke her from her vigil.

“Now the Cocoon has been shed…” He answered her question.

She turned, to see him returned, and positively glowing with power, eight grey wings furled at his shoulders. With a gesture the stone lifted and zipped back to him, lodging back into it’s place upon his arm. He was translucent and yet glowing with barely contained energy, so much so he seemed more real, more tangible than if he had been merely solid.

“ It’s a strange butterfly to emerge from it, though…” Fate responded.

“ More true than you know…but first, there’s something I have to do…” and with that, he knelt down, and crouched double upon himself.

And as he did so, those incredible wings pulled themselves free from him…and with them came another being, freed at last from a prison of untold lifetimes.

Fate, to her credit, did not lose her composure one bit, but merely watched as the glowing grey being pulled herself free from her former host and for the first time glanced around with her own eyes, seeing the world around her for herself for the first time.

“ Fate, This is…”

“ Her.” Fate said simply, understanding.

“ Well, quite.” David affirmed.

* * *

“ So he’s become…a Device?” Nanoha asked Fate as she tried to get her head around what Fate had tried to explain of the events.

“ In a way. More like part of one, really. He’s still himself, with his own personality, and he’s still able to interact with the world, albeit as a solid projection, but he’s…changed. He’s also accepted, and been accepted by, this other being tied to a Lost Logia built into the Device.”

“ Hmmn…it sounds like how Reinforce was when she was part of the book of Darkness….” Nanoha suggested.

“ Maybe…except that there’s no automated defence program to deal with, Thank heavens" Fate conceded, shivering.
"I’m going to have to speak to Hayate about that. I don’t want to upset her with the comparison but…the being who was trapped within the Device…. she’s been alone for so long…and yet seen so much. She’s old enough to remember the Tome of the Night Sky, as it was before it’s corruption…and after, she was even used in a failed attempt to seal it. She managed to derail the whole Belkan war because of her destructive abilities running wild…until she was driven off. She even remembers my Mother, and Alicia, from when Mother tried to use her as a power source, before the Jewel seeds…”

“ It sounds like she’s been through a lot…” Nanoha responded.

“ Yes…and yet…and yet his was the first voice to reach her…because he was the first to listen in return….” Fate answered.

“ What will happen to him now?” Nanoha asked.

“ Well, he’s technically a lost Logia now…but at the same time, he’s a Bureau Device…so I’m hoping he can be treated the same as Rein and Agito are.” Fate was hoping that the precedent set by the Unison Devices could apply also to these less well understood circumstances.

“ That would be good. I hope everything turns out well for him…he’s been through so much…”

“ Says you…it’s not like you’re a beginner to the strange occurrences business, Nanoha…” Fate rolled her eyes.

“Not really…But I kind of understand how he must feel…When I first met Raging Heart…I didn’t understand anything…but now…”

“ They’ve always been by our sides…and maybe we don’t appreciate that enough…” Fate offered.

“ No SIR!” Bardiche brusquely interrupted.

“ It is not so, my Master…”

“ Fate-Chan, Is this some kind of rebellion?” Nanoha wondered.

“ I think this is our friends telling us not to worry so much about them…”

“ Mou, I can’t help that…Because they are our friends…not just tools…” Nanoha asserted.

“ I know that” Fate affirmed

“ Nanoha-Chan, Fate-Chan, over here!” Colonel Yagami called the two over to a viewing port.

“ Hayate-Chan, what’s going on?”

“ How rude, Rein is here too desu!”

“ Sorry, sorry Rein, we couldn’t see you from over there.” Nanoha apologised.

“ Anyway, why did you call us over?”

“ Good news. I managed to get your friend’s new ‘status’ overlooked with Bureau HQ. As long as he remains within our command, he’s not going to be considered under the Lost Logia regulations act…. however, when he’s off base, we have to assume responsibility for him…”

“ That’s really good! Does he know?” Nanoha asked.

Hayate nodded. “ He’s been talking to the WolkenRitter…who remember her, apparently. It seems that they encountered her during the brief lull in the Belkan war she caused when both sides conspired to drive her off. Apparently, the result of one of her former masters misusing her abilities and spreading unstable Chaos energy about…” Hayate explained.

“ That’s good…they probably have the most in common with him, as well as Rein and Agito, since they are in a similar position…or were.” Fate suggested.

Hayate merely pointed at the Viewport.

It looked in on one of the training areas, and a blurred shape ripped through a row of training drones, rippling back into solidity as it’s incredible velocity dissipated instantly.

The shape resolved into the form of a sword-wielding knight, with a Blade in each hand, and a scabbard on each forearm, held slightly off the ground by eight grey wings sprouting from their shoulders, shedding cascading grey feathers constantly, a ponytail of steel grey pulled back from their head, and their surcoat parti-coloured in white on black, split by a partition of grey…

As if sensing their presence, the knight turned to the port, and Fate gasped as she saw the symbols on Signum’s forehead, of a white circle encompassing a black eight pointed star, emanating from a single point of light.

“ He can… I mean they can perform Unison?!” Fate asked, a little redundantly…

“ Evidently!” Rein scowled and turned around in a huff.

“ Aww, is Rein-Chan feeling left out?” Nanoha asked mischievously.

“ Don’t worry Rein, I’ll always have a place for you…” Hayate consoled her Unison Device.

“ Actually, I’m more worried about how Agito would take this…” Fate admitted.

“ This is Betrayal! This is Abandonment…This is totally unfair!!” Came the sudden shout, seemingly from nowhere, as if mentioning the devil had caused her to come running…

Shinji and Gendo? What? I know Shinji becomes awesome for a while in Rebuild, but not enough to warrant a SaiGAR nomination.

Yes, I have more questions now. Some of them may be stupidly obvious, but my research options are limited. This one is about mage rankings.

I've always thought, based on something I can't remember rightly at the moment, that the mere ability to fly requires magic rank A at least. I've chosen to interpret this as meaning as the ability to defy gravity under one's own power (without the use of, say, Wing Road, or riding something that can naturally fly) while also being able to perform other strenuous actions; in other words, the flight ability is second nature to these mages, and they can do so without concentrating that much.

However, I've just read this, specifically the "Mage Rank Examination" section, which states "Also, on average Armed Forces member are usually ranked D~C, while B rank is known to many Air/Ground mages to be an unpassable wall at first."

Am I reading it incorrectly, or does this mean that the Average Air mage, which I'm assuming to mean those nameless grunts who are there mainly as cannon fodder or to be impressed by the Aces/Strikers, but can still fly, does not, in fact, have to be rank A?

Now, the members of the 37th CIAA (with the exception of Nova) are ranked A and above, entirely because I assumed that rank A was a prerequisite for flight. In light of this, though, I have to ask: should I downgrade their ranks? I'd rather not have them be more powerful than absolutely necessary, since I'm pretty bad at thinking up of challenges for the really powerful characters that doesn't translate into a kryptonite weakness or sheer brute force.

If it helps, and for those unfamiliar with the 37th CIAA (still without a proper unit name, despite Ivey's insistence on "Boobies" somewhere in there), this is one of those units which are tasked to investigate and apprehend notorious criminals, like mad scientists who are slightly less accomplished than Jail Scaglietti or Precia Testarossa. They are not elite or well-known, and in fact they are seen as a unit just dead-end enough to send enforcers with troublesome personality quirks to, but not so bad as to be completely hopeless.

I'll have some new Original Characters (well, two villains, one of whom is a mad scientist type) soon, I promise.

Being his daughter, i too was supposed to be part of this world and hence, I arrived here. It was quick, too quick- I suddenly left on the day that you were sick, according to the teacher. Ever since, i never had the opportunity to write to you until about a month after, but when i managed to send it to Japan, it came back to me, the messenger saying that the two of you had already moved out to some unknown location. For years, I tried many times to find out your current address, but each letter I sent always went back- that is until a few months (years?) ago.


I was watching a drama when suddenly a news flash came in. The neighboring planet was somehow under attack by strange robots and what seemed to be sentai-ish girls with a big battleship. But when i thought the battle was starting to turn bad, something appeared...


But i won't tell it yet :P but if you wanted to hear the rest of my story, you can visit my place, since father and everyone in the house are too worried that they cannot allow me outside the grounds. Common Writing Paper is also so expensive here that's why i came up shorthanded on my story- not to mention that this piece is from the pad that I have when I left Earth, but I've managed to slip in a couple of passes good for 4 and a map crystal to my place from your current location.


I hope you do visit... I missed everyone back on Earth, but at least someone is still there my friend.

One can see a vein pop out of the younger's head. Finally she snaps, slamming her hand on the keyboard.

"Will you just shut up!!!" in a seemingly out of self voice she almost yelled, almost scaring the wits out of Sol.

And as Sol begins to tear up, another much older girl enters the room, with blond hair, blue eyes and a real big sister.

"My, my, you should not make Sol cry like that, Pei-chan..." blond big sister then spoke, patting the head of Sol.

"Stop adding the -chan please... and she's disturbing me!"

"You know Sol... she just carefree and wants to have a little fun, i wanted to play outside too..."

"Even you Sigrune..." Pei puffed.

Outside, we focus to a maid, pink eyes and hair and sighing as she removed the dust from a carpet.

Suddenly, the sunny view was suddenly turned into the artificial lights of an examination room. in one room, four object that seemed to be ice blocks were there, instrument arms moving around- and inside of them, a faint image of something- make it someone inside- the people mentioned earlier, but in some sort of armor. Then in another room, two people were talking.

"Sorry Commander Antonov, still nothing, every logical way to try and defrost these girls are ineffective, even lasers and even ionic and nuclear... I think this ice is... magical..." a scientist replied.

"How strong?"

"According to all references, as powerful as "Eternal Coffin", even stronger..."

"Well it has to be that strong." The one called Antonov replied. "If the legend was correct..."

"Legend?"

"The 4 guards of the divinity, the four soldiers of the Saint- the Divine's hand when they are on the ground... the 4 maidens that were buried by the divine herself, having died in her arms... they are not just any angel... but for us to know that, I need to check with Cardial Carim Gracia with this... since these four were unearthed in the remains of a Cardinal's temple..."

"But that means..."

"More Logia to keep an eye out of in the outside zones huh? This is not good..."

"Well, Ancient Velkan technology must be returned to the Velkans- after we drop them off we'll be looking for Ancient Mid Technology next..."

"By the way, the accident he was talking about was the memory of the cameras running out while on shooting. Seriously, he has the aid of T3H CAMERAWOMAN *Hears 'ohohohohoho' in the background*... so why not ask for more camera help?"

"And yes, Keroko, i hope they are not too OOC..."

"And on other news, Sky Girls is making me produce more crack... but i managed to shelve "Sky Girls: Accel Plus" until my works are done..."

"Well i have to power this baby down for a moment... and i'll try to expand the list of presents to include some more OC denizens..."

Carlsberg Blockbuster Sunday has been a recent trendsetter for crack Cadia movies, and now we're granted two more:

He had been redeployed on orders back to Belka by both the Church Council and Celestial Being as an old threat reared its head. New toys and relationships abound in this dark revisiting of Kha's past.

It would depend on the context, but the way it seems to me is that for Air/Ground mages who're moving from C to B, the jump between levels in terms of power, skill and tactics tends to require several tries before they get the hang of it.

Now, the members of the 37th CIAA (with the exception of Nova) are ranked A and above, entirely because I assumed that rank A was a prerequisite for flight. In light of this, though, I have to ask: should I downgrade their ranks? I'd rather not have them be more powerful than absolutely necessary, since I'm pretty bad at thinking up of challenges for the really powerful characters that doesn't translate into a kryptonite weakness or sheer brute force.

It depends... probably a mix of B and A ranks would be better. The Order of Freelance Mages, who were created jointly by Kagerou and myself, range from B+ (Naomi Jaeger, youngest & weakest member) to an average of A (Franz Jaeger, Assault Platoon Leader; most Order mages), a few AA (Glen Schattenmann, Emili Nailo), AA/AAA boderline (Sergeant Major Ivanovich. Yes, THAT Johnson) and plain S (Erick von Long, CO of the Order).

If it helps, and for those unfamiliar with the 37th CIAA (still without a proper unit name, despite Ivey's insistence on "Boobies" somewhere in there), this is one of those units which are tasked to investigate and apprehend notorious criminals, like mad scientists who are slightly less accomplished than Jail Scaglietti or Precia Testarossa. They are not elite or well-known, and in fact they are seen as a unit just dead-end enough to send enforcers with troublesome personality quirks to, but not so bad as to be completely hopeless.

I'll have some new Original Characters (well, two villains, one of whom is a mad scientist type) soon, I promise.

Hmmm... so they're sorta like the 08th MS Team then, a unit of rejects, eh? Well, this could be quite interesting to see; I know most of us tend to focus on elite units and such; about the only two klutzes are Tais, the R&D pwn puppy, and Franz, who suffers from a bad case of hot blood backfiring on him all the time.
