US Bill S.978 (Very important to know)

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...?bill=s112-978

^^^ MAKE SURE TO READ IT CAREFULLY!

Well this bill will change everything if it gets passed in the US. This bill will not allow any copyrighted material such as video games, TV shows, music, and etc. Anything that is copyrighted material on the website will not be allowed to be streamed on the internet. This will mean any site with these stuff will be shut down and be no more.

In the eyes of the people who came up with this, they think that this will help them keep from losing money. When you consider the fact of piracy it is understandable since people can watch or hear stuff for free. What's suprising and funny is that most people are a bit panicked about this because they think that this is targeted towards video games, but it is focusing on anything that is copyrighted regardless, and this will allow the government to take control, looking over which site has copyrighted material in take it down as part as a Ten Strike warning thing. Only excepts to streaming stuff on the internet is that you NEED PERMISSION FROM ANY COMPANY THAT OWNS ANY MATERIAL YOU WANT TO STREAM WHATSOEVER. Even if the video game company didn't give two s**ts about you streaming a game or whatever but if they gov't takes control, they will give a darn about it and will take down that video.

Did I also mention about this bill also includes public performances such as Karaoke, or just own over guitar cover of a song from a music artist, the bill includes that too so you'll get in trouble for that.

The punishment for 10 attempts at uploading copyright material is pretty much jail time up to 5 years or more and fines. Something like that.

Somebody must have heard already about this, I decided to bring this up for discussion as it is an issue I think that should not be ignored. This S.978 bill has gotten some people riled up and I think even the people of this forum should have a say on this.

I OPPOSE THIS BILL OUTRIGHT. I KNOW DARN WELL I DON'T PROFIT FROM JUST UPLOADING VIDEO GAMES ONLINE FOR ALL TO SEE, BUT I ENJOY IT. I made a hobby out of it, and this bill could take away it all. Not to mention it pretty much affirms that the freedom that this America is supposed to stand for is pretty much dead. I do understand that from the supporter's persepective that this bill is supposed to help not losing money from companies, and probably help people to go buy. But I don't think it will help at all but hurt...it pretty much kills the internet and the freedom the people have left in the United States, but that's my opinion.

What do you guys think?

I read about it on a video game site. Involving the government in this worries me, but I don't understand the extent in which the government will become involved, so I'm not sure how worried I need to be.

Regardless, I hope this doesn't make it harder to stream or make videos [I mean, I know it will, but I hope it doesn't make people stop doing it and I hope the government won't go on a persecution spree]. I enjoy watching fighting game and League of Legends streams.

Whoever brought this law up needs to die in a grease fire.

It's overblown like the orphan works law was a few years back. At largest you might get some defunct class action suit against a bunch of *tube users that gets thrown out of court and loses the RIAA and MPAA a few hundred thousand in legal fees and a few million in political graft.

Edit: in essence, the bill adds streaming/embedding streams to existing piracy laws. If you've followed piracy cases before you know how impotent those turned out to be. The music industry would have been better off setting those millions of dollars into hedge funds or t-bills or shoe boxes.

Even if something as totalitarian as this was ever passed I'm sure there would be ways around it.

Also USA =/= world.

There might be stuff passed in the US, but the internet is bigger then the USA. No single country can hope to make a dent in the internet, so relax...

Busybodies. I hate them. Although I try to keep the word "hate" out of my vocabulary, I do use it to describe my feelings regarding busybidies and politicians. Often they are the same person, always trying to take fun and enjoyment away from others.

Even if nothing comes from this bill, some busybody was hard at work trying to take away your fun.

That's what the US doesn't seem to understand. The US Government seems to think historically that if can act as world police and effectively do what Interpol is actually supposed to do (as ineffective as Interpol is but you catch my drift). So I wouldn't be worried either. The US can't control an entity that has come to function on its own without a universal governing body that has come to be known as the internet.

The thing is.. that is only true as long as the participants actively *WATCHDOG* the Internet. So you have to pay attention, you have to write and complain to your politicians, you have to write the programs that work around such "failures".

Even if it passes, so what? You can still download using torrents. The content in question isn't at the torrent site so you can't shut it down. They're doing similar thing in here Europe but I'm not really concerned..

I wouldn't be surprised that someone would play dirty to get this bill passed, that would be so low. It's bad enough already their stupidity also puts the country in a bad positions. thing is, what if this bill passed, and something good came out of it, they wouldn't get rid of this bill ever. Then again, I bet someone will find a way around the bill and still have people getting their stuff illegally.

It's all for the money.

Makes me think how politicians in my country do: name recall, photo ops, "crusades" against "immorality", and some other repelling PR spins in time for the elections; wash, rinse, repeat ad nauseum while they receive the payola under the table.

Remember the prohibition era from the 20's to the early 30's? If the bill passes, that's what's gonna happen, except this time, it won't be with alcohol

This bill criminalizes a lot of good people. Some people who wouldn't do any harm intentionally. There are those of us who pirate, but I must confess I have bought more things due to it. I'm well below the poverty line on disability, and there are just some things I can't obtain. So I often have to pirate it in order to see it. Otherwise I am basically in the dark.

Yet there are so many karaoke bars here, and young bands do plenty of covers in order to get started. It is easier to gain popularity doing songs people know first before exposing your own material. Since people are often less likely to pay attention to something original if you're not popular. So this bill effects my brother who doesn't pirate anything, buys all that he owns, and is basically law abiding.

This bill is highly facist, and it never ceases to amaze me what new limiting rules, laws, and bills come out of the United States. Yet the citizens are taught they're truly the most free.
