Lame jokes aside, and somewhat back on topic; I just can't see Ranka as being that submissive. I think we're going to see her strength come out over the course of the rest of the series. I don't get a moe-blob vibe from her anymore per se; mostly she just makes me think of a throwback Japanese idealized Disney-blob. Meh.

The Nanase faction is strong there! she gets 3 single votes in a poll for the entire female cast of Macross and here she can only get 5 in a multi vote lol.. Sheryl took too many votes from Misa Hayase... (ranka didn't hurt Minmei at all...) pretty sure Hayase would absolutely destroy Minmei in a one on one poll on MW.

Majority of people tend to root for the underdog (Ranka), but in this case, it's surprising to see her fans are the underdogs as well. I can see why it's hard for Ranka fans to like Sheryl when the entire miniscule Ranka faction is up against an almost unanimous board of Sheryl fans. Underdogs in both character and fans, how fun.

Ranka didn't become the underdog until the end of episode 6 with the earring gift and the goodbye concert. In fact, if we take the deculture version of episode 1 into account then Ranka was the presumed leading lady for over 5 months. The Ranka support base was strong and healthy going into the series while Sheryl's was almost non-existant with many Frontier's fans hostile or at the very least ambivalent to Sheryl's character.

Unlike what Wolfboy suggests, the show's fans were in fact not rooting for the underdog, Sheryl. It took episode 5 to really grab the audiences' attention and then it took episode 6 to install an initial fanbase. After that, Sheryl's character development has slowly, but solidly, won over a number of fans while at the same time maintaining the loyalty of the older fans. It has been quite fascinating to watch the evolution of the main characters' fanbases. Just go look at the older episode threads and listen to how the tones and opinions evolved.

^ Yep, for a lot of people it took Ep5 for Sheryl's fanbase to really develop. We were shown the Sheryl beneath the persona of work.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. The last few episodes has had some key scenes that have slowly grown Ranka's character into a more "young woman" role instead of the loli, moe-blob. It's the type of character growth that a lot of people have been waiting for.

Well Ep8 reminded me as if it were of something out of FMP: Fumoffu. It was a funny filler that barely touched on any side of the character development spectrum... which ended with a cutesy Alto x Sheryl flying scene.

And if you mean "hatchet" by animation quality. Yeah that episode was the WORST by far, so far.

I for one want Ranka to develop into her own character and I'm more than glad to see that happening. I wont touch on future eps but it's going to happen one way or another.

In any case, Sheryl is Sheryl, no one compares.

I've never thought of her less for needing to be saved or for her being helpless. The only things I had a gripe with were her brooding in jealousy and at a point, her dis-concern for anything except Alto.

Yeah, Ranka was completely disfuctional on more than one occasion all because Alto didn't leave a text-message. And her jealousy of Sheryl, so strong and uncompromising. You'd think Ranka would be happy about being constantly obstructed in all facets of her life, by an unlikeable and self-centered person like Sheryl, but the nerve of her to actually be disappointed because something didn't go her way.

If she became a carbon copy of Sheryl she would still be disliked. Why do we want a copy when we have the real deal? No, she needs to come into her own. A growth spurt to get rid of that loli moe design certainly wouldn't hurt either.
