Retelling of The Golden Bough? Are you sure this is not just people seeing things that simply aren't there? You can stare long enough at a slice of toasted bread until you see the face of Jesus, and you can play around with a plot long enough to think you're seeing analogies with existing myths and stories (especially considering how deep run some of the archetypes those stories use). Doesn't mean that something was intentionally put there by the author instead of being just a result of your imagination.

It is not subtle, they practicality beat your head in with a sledgehammer made of mistletoe and the link between human fertility and that of the land. And if that is not enough they name drop the book as well.

True that (I didn't remember it was name-dropped but now that you mention it, you're right, the children were reading it in the Garden), but "link between human fertility and that of the land" is a pretty old traditional concept. It doesn't mean it's especially deep (in fact, I'd say, since the whole point of The Golden Bough is to be a collection of old myths and superstitions, if you take those things literally you're actually missing the point), and if anything that's one of the big criticisms that was made to Darling, that it seemed to push a very backwards view of sexuality and fertility. You don't get much more backwards than the iron age. It still doesn't make the plot deep or good or well written, to say nothing of the characters.

I think the more important question here is: did the so-called "retelling of The Golden Bough" actually make FranXX story better? I don't think so.

Sometimes, retelling good past-works does not improve the story at hand. It can even cripple it if the storyteller doesn't know what s/he's doing. For example, The Dark Knight Rises tried to retell the classic A Tale of Two Cities but it doesn't really improve the story in the movie. In fact, it actually generates some lapses in logic, plot holes and conveniences. Thanks to that, TDKR is still widely considered as the lowest point in Nolan's TDK-trilogy.

I still find it hard to tell whether he hates the show or not. I mean would you really go through all this effort for a show you hate?

I agree with him about sitting through 24 episodes that had a huge plot hole and yes Trigger makes no sense.

That is an extremely shitty reason to put so much unnecessary effort into something.

That's you, yes. But you're not the one having to go through extreme amounts of effort to make just a 10 minute video.

And by that logic he also hates Re:Zero.

There's nothing unnecessary for the sake of comedy.

Implying living is shitty and unnecessary, but I can not really argue that

Gigguk said that he initially liked Franxx, but didn't like the VIRM development

So

And he said Re: Zero was entertaining, just not a masterpiece.

Dude, these days, popular youtubers doing videos about Franxx is guaranteed tons of views. And "tons of views" is very good for their channels which will eventually get them more money. Not to mention that they get to vent something by making those videos. There is nothing unnecessary about Gigguk's Franxx video when it comes to the big picture.

Well, that is enough information to discount his opinion on just about anything.
