Wow Ozen is so old. What a test that was, i wonder if there next test is easier than fighting against her. Happy that Lyza is in fact alive, that part about her when she was younger was nice too. Felt it go darker until the turnaround after Reg woke up, really thought it was the end.

Getting strung up naked seems to be a pretty common punishment in that world. I guess that just goes to show that the world those characters live in doesn't really shy away from nudity the same way some cultures do. Kids are regualry strung up naked and both Riko and her uncle figure showed absolutely no shame checking whether or not Reg had a penis. I'm sort of surprised that Ozen didn't attempt to check.

Whelp, Ozen sure fooled me, I thought she hinged on being some kind of sadistic scientist that modified her body for super-strength. Heck, when I heard her age, or rather, the amount of years she's been diving, I thought she'd try and do some body-swap shenanigans with Riko.... bottom line, I thought she was evil, so I was kinda taken aback when Reg woke up to find it was all a test. Well, Ozen almost got obliterated(unless she knew what he was gonna do and how long it'd take to do it, still 'playing' with him).
At least they'll get a bit of training before continuing. I was honestly afraid that Riko would be pretty much useless with Reg doing all the heavy lifting. Hopefully after this bit of training, she'll be able to hold her own against SOMETHING as of right now it feels like she can't protect herself from anything on this current level.

I personally really liked this episode. I think this was the first time I genuinely feared and felt bad for our duo! Just when I thought Ozen couldn't get any more intimidating than she already was, we got slammed with this.

That's just Ozen's hypothesis, if not merely a scare tactic during the act. We've seen Riko give her reasoning multiple times for why she's going in order to convince her friends to support her - a zombie would just dive in. Even supposing that she's compelled towards the abyss due to the vessel, that does not equate to having no "agency whatsoever".

And then, even if she is... everyone of those orphans goes to the Abyss. Their culture indoctrinates them into it.

Which by the way, we never see Lyza's face in the anime so her being alive is doubtful imo....

I really love Ozen's character, I get the impression she is a good but misunderstood person. Who knows better than anyone the degree at which the Abyss can warp a persons body and mind. I think her meanness was just her way of best preparing the two for the hardships ahead.
Her outfit is pure badass though.

Ok wow, the big reveal did not disappoint! So what exactly is Riko now, alive or dead? I already feel sad hearing her end would come soon when the effects of the vessel wears off.
I guessed wrong on origins of Ozen's power, wish they had told us more of the white whistle's secret powers. Ozen's truely quite a unique character. Reg got wreckt totally, but they needed that reality check if they hope to advance deep down the Abyss to where Lyza is. |

Episode 8:
I think the Abyss really is a fascinating place. Even at dangerous layers, there are beautiful sights. Riko should be more careful though since she almost got caught into a trap again if it wasn't for Reg. Interesting to see more of Ozen and Lyra's past. Ozen is once again being helpful although I think she realizes the danger of what Reg and Riko will face. Not bad for a buildup episode. That ending gave me some feels especially with this series' amazing soundtrack.

Given the current pacing, it seems very unlikely our plucky couple will reach the bottom layers in the remaining five episodes, but maybe things will speed up as they descend further. I hope whatever ending we get is conclusive.
