Artists Alike and from Afar - January 2009 Contest (Theme - BADASS GIRLS)

Ok... I suppose I'll throw in my 2 cents. I'll try to keep it short.

Toxic, I am always in awe with your attention to detail. but there are times such as this where it acts as a double edge. While you've shown time and again that you are capable of intricate details, you tend to go overboard. Everything looks extremely cluttered, there's no sense of direction or space, it loses proper focus and the viewer will have their eyes all over the place trying to figure out whats going on.

Also, there's some anatomy issue, particularly in the arms. There's no depth of shape or proper muscular form. The result is the arms produced what is called a "tube" effect.

C.A. Nice work, but there are issues. Your biggest problem is you rely too heavily on tone. There's only so much shade of gray the human eye can translate, forcing the viewer to actually stare at the image for awhile to see the tonal difference to make out detail. Also, because of this, there are several areas in your line work where it comes off as flat with no sense of depth. Once such area is the arms.

One last thing I'll mention is the upper torso to head area. The proportional relationship and placement is off. The head appears somewhat smaller than it should, and doesn't appear to be connected with the rest of the body. Also the chest area is much too wide. If you pay closely attention the way a human rib cage is structured. It's only wide from frontal perspective. From the side its shallow.

Zhaxra, I've always loved your art style. Reminds me of artists like Bruce Timm. You have a good sense of design of flow. The placement of objects and such are well done where it makes the viewers eyes focus on the primary subject. The main issue I am seeing, is mainly some anatomy problems. Mostly in the girl's arm. It's more of a force perspective issue than anatomy. The background characters have some minor issues, but its easily forgettable since they aren't the focus of the piece.

Well, I hope I didn't say too much >_>.. anyway, my vote goes to Zhaxra.
