The one which Lelouch is the main char is Code Geass. Nice choice

I second the Macross F and Gundam 00 recommendations, and also suggest Gundam Wing and Patlabor. Patlabor is more focused on the chars than on the mechas tough, but it is the closest to "real robot" i've watched.

Both Macross Frontier and Gundam 00 are good choices.

If you liked Gurren, then I suggest GaoGaiGar: King of braves (TV), then Brave King GaoGaiGar Final and
Brave King GaoGaiGar Final Grand Glorious Gathering (TV)
as a special.

This show is about Hotblood, and gattai with trains lol

No one recommended Gundam Seed? It's a good show and hass all those thoughts about the reason for fighting, attaining peace, etc..

Gundam Seed's fight scenes gets repetitive as the series progresses and Freedom has too much bling-bling.

Here are my recommendations:

As you mentioned Lelouch, Code Geass and Code Geass R2 is my top pick, and here are the others.

Macross Frontier
Gundam 00

Hopefully you've seen Neon Genesis.. I'm not big into mecha (Neon Genesis and Eureka 7 are the only two i've seen) but it absolutly amazing.

I say "Neon Genesis Evangelion". That anime is the classics upon classics when it comes to mecha.

I also highly recommend "Gun X Sword". Another of my favourites and unlike any other mecha you'll ever see. T'was produced, directed, and drawn by the same people that done Code Geass. Although I personally found it a lot better. Just my opnion.

I think Strike Freedom has a lot more bling-bling than the Freedom. Well, Gundam SEED is decent, but don't even get close to Gundam SEED Destiny, it was awful.

Seconding Heroic Age. Also, watch Sousei no Aquarion and Sousei no Aquarion: Wings of Betrayal (OAV). Another good series (And with awesome music!), IMO.

I just finished watching Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machena.. both got a good storyline with mecha suits (not giant robots like Gundam or Pat Labor) ..however both are just movies not a series.

Best thing about them is the animation style, its 3D anime ..not like FF Spirits within..but just Anime in 3D like in games ..but better (specialy the Ex Mechina)

I suggest Gasaraki, one of the more realistic use of mecha though I will say it gets Eva ish at the end.

Just my personal favorite though is the English dub of Dai Guard. It's about office workers piloting a giant mecha to save japan from monsters :3. But seriously watch the dub and not the sub. The office jokes that come off as well when you have to read them and the english voice actors really do a great job once they settle into their roles (about 3-4 eps in)
