That's not it, he took 300 players that were going to be unplugged from SAO and rerouted them towards his own place effectively still trapping them.

basically. It's a poorly plot device overall and the arc plot it's self sucks. But I like the Alfhiem world itself it's beautiful, and I like "Leafa" helluva lot more than Asuna but that's just my subjective opinion.

I don't really care about either of the girls (tsundere watashi-no shumi janai kara-ne), but I do agree that a world in which I could fly is definitely a world I would gladly spend many hours of my life.

Specifically, he's trying to use them to develop research involving manipulation of the brain, for things like mind-control and such. It's practically told to your face.

You could even theorize that this sort of ties in with a later arc (that hasn't been animated)

They didn't volunteer to be tortured and brainwashed. And if they start being unable to logout, the police will ask him questions, instead of blaming the first terrorist.
