Hm, any particular reason you decided on those clothes? Are they outfits you borrowed from other animes? L and D's outfits sound fine, but why did you put S in a china dress? I don't really have a problem with it, it just sounds... odd for her, specifically, to use as casual wear.

I was mixing and matching based on characters who either shared the same seiyuu as the Ace in question or bore a strong resemblance to another character in some other game/anime. D and L were straightforward since I already knew what I wanted. S was tougher since she didn't have a big enough personality to really identify what she should wear. But since she wouldn't care, she would be fine with pretty much anything that she deems acceptable.

Anyone want to stab where I got my inspirations from? I'll give you virtual chicken if you get it right!

Remembering what was Forgotten

Nanoha has a bit of a problem.

Just a teeny one.

The young Ace of Aces knew about it for the longest time but had told herself that it wouldn't be a problem later on.

How very wrong she was.

As Nanoha was scrambling up and down the stairs at her home in Uminari, Miyuki took a bite from an apple and grinned, clearly amused by her little sister's predicament. She was sitting quite comfortably on the sofa and made no attempt to help her sister up as she fell countless times on her way to the bathroom. Of course, Miyuki knew that near Nanoha's bedroom there was another bathroom but decided to keep her mouth shut, instead deciding to be the bad one for once and watch Nanoha's anxious antics.

“WhatamIgoingtodo!?” screamed Nanoha, waving her arms in frustration. “Ishouldhaveseenthiscoming!”

She then proceeded to go once again to the bathroom to check on her hair, not that it will do her much good. Wearing nothing but a fluffy pink towel to cover herself, she scrambled up the stairs and this time, slammed herself shut in the her room.

While it was true that Nanoha is a calm and gentle person, there are times that she succumbs to her raging hormones. In other words, she transforms into a troubled 15 year-old Middle School girl with a problem on her hands: she doesn't have a date to the dance.

Miyuki chuckled.

Even though she loves to see her baby sister act her age, she can't help but allow her “big sister” side of herself to take over.

After finishing up her snack, she stood up and headed towards Nanoha's bedroom. Knocking three times, Miyuki asked, “Hey, Nanoha? Can I come in?”

When no reply came, Miyuki excused herself and entered Nanoha's room. What she saw made her burst into laughter. Nanoha's entire room was covered in clothes, from neon colored panties to dresses and skirts.

“Nanoha! What the hell happened here?!” breathed Miyuki, looking around. "It's like World War III was fought in here!”

Nanoha only groaned, curling up in a fetal position on her bed.

“I have no date and to make matters worse, I can't find anything to wear even if I did have one...”

She trailed off in an incoherent mumble. Miyuki shook her head and sat next to Nanoha at the edge of the bed.

“Don't say that, sis. I'm sure we can fix all that.”

“How?”

“Uh, well. Let's see...”

After giving it much thought, Miyuki finally spoke.

“Well, are there any boys in school that you like?”

“No.”

“Hm...” Muyuki scratched her chin. “How about where you work?”

Nanoha shook her head.

“So that's a no, too,...” sighed Miyuki, rubbing her eyes. “Okay... how about... Fate-chan?”

In an instant, Nanoha's sat up, giving her sister an incredulous look.

“Sis... I'm not gay...”

Miyuki laughed it off.

“Could have fooled me.”

Nanoha only stared.

“You may not be gay Nanoha but I'm sure Fate-chan is gay enough for both of you,” laughed Miyuki, thumping Nanoha's back in a playful manner.

Nanoha on the other hand was not pleased.

“Fate-chan is not just a friend, she's also like a sister to me, Miyuki. Just like you are to me.”

Miyuki was taken aback by that response. The sincerity in Nanoha's azure eyes were so piercing that Miyuki knew she had crossed a line. The friendship between Nanoha and Fate transcended far beyond “normal” but love in the context that Miyuki was aiming at was far from the truth. Fate was Nanoha's other half and Nanoha was Fate's other half and it will never become something more than that.

For the first time in her life, Miyuki felt incredibly stupid. Groaning inwardly, she said, “I never knew. I'm sorry, Nanoha. I should have never assumed you two were-”

Nanoha had cut her off with a smile.

“Don't worry about it, Sis. A lot of people mistakenly think that, too. Honestly, don't worry about it.”

Miyuki smiled and hugged her sister. When they pulled apart, Nanoha asked, “Are you still going to help me?”

“You bet!” replied Miyuki, standing up. “So, there are no boys in school you like, not even at work and Fate-chan is most definitely out of the question...”

Silence soon engulfed, both lost in their own thoughts. They were like that for awhile until a thought struck Miyuki so hard that she felt relieved and ashamed. After coughing to catch Nanoha's attention, she asked tentatively, “Are you sure there is not a guy you can think of that you would take to the dance?”

Nanoha frowned slightly in thought but after a minute, shook her head.

Miyuki stared at her sister sadly. She sat beside Nanoha and took one of her hands. After giving it a gentle squeeze, she said, “I know one guy we missed.”

Nanoha blinked.

“Who?”

“Think, Nanoha. Think...”

“You can continue saying that but I still-”

“Let me put it this way,” interrupted Miyuki. “If it weren't for him, the bond that you share with Fate-chan would never have happened. If it weren't for him, you wouldn't have the job you love so much and if it weren't for him, the people you had saved with your magic would all be dead.”

Nanoha raised an eyebrow.

“Sis, I still don't-”

And then...it hit her.

Yuuno...

Without even realizing it, Nanoha burst into tears, allowing her sister to envelope her in a hug.

“How could I have missed him?!” sobbed Nanoha. “He gave me the life I love! He gave me Raising Heart! He gave me the power to save lives! Fate-chan would be dead if it weren't for him!”

“Silly girl,” soothed Miyuki. “That's what I said, didn't I? Well...except for the Raising Heart part.”

When Nanoha had calmed down somewhat, Miyuki made her look up at her, wiping away the tears as she did.

“Listen to me, Nanoha. I have the perfect dress for you to go to the dance. Wait here.”

With that said, she stood and walked out of the room but not before saying, “You know what to do, little Sis.”

Miyuki gave Nanoha a wink and left.

After searching around her messy room, Nanoha found her cellphone and as soon as she dialed the number, she blushed.

“Nanoha?” came Yuuno's surprised voice.

“Uh, Yuuno? Nyahaha...Um...I was wondering if you would like to...”

It was a day like any other in the Infinity Library. The chief librarian, Yuuno Scrya was reviewing the information to be sorted into the library for that day. With a multitude of worlds and literally billions of scientist, mages and archeologist working on them, information flows into the library like a raging river, and it is the job of the librarians to catalog them and allow the free flow of information to the public.

“Ah, lieutenant Signum, chief librarian Yuuno is in the section F91 and is expecting you.”
“My thanks”

Signum was there for much a reason. Looking up some information for a series of ancient artifact thieves, she had requested help from her old friend Yuuno to dig up more information on the artifacts to better understand the motives of the culprits.

“Hello Scrya, do you...” Signum's voice trailed off as her brain short circuited and a blush appeared on her face. Was Scrya always this good looking...?

On the other end, Yuuno was experiencing a similar situation. Entranced by Signum, he can only stare dumbly at the vision of beauty in front on him in stunned silence.

It was Signum who broke this awkward situation by speaking. “Ahem, Scrya, you said that you have found information on the Obscura artifacts?”

“Ah yes, the artifacts, I've found this tome which has several references to the artifacts, although I'm not sure if it will help.” Yuuno said as he held up a book to Signum, “hopefully it will”

Their fingers touched as Signum took the book, and both jumped back as if shocked by lightning, the book dropping to the floor with a loud thump.

Both keeled down quickly to retrieve the book, only to look up and see how close their faces are. And they got closer and close, until....

“I'm sorry, making out is now allowed in the library”

...a voice shocked both of them back into the real world.

“Haha, hello Elise, funny you should be here”, said an extremely embarrassed Yuuno, whose face was so red, it was in danger of catching fire. He look a look at his partner in crime Signum and gulped, she looked ready to start slicing something or someone up, like a certain someone who had interrupted them.

“I don't supposed you two have meet. Signum, meet Elise. Elise is the assistant chief librarian, she helps take care of business in the library when I'm not around. Elise, meet Signum, she's a lieutenant in TSAB rapid response squad and an old friend of mine. Ohmy,lookatthetime,gottogo” He said as he quickly picked up the book and started pushing Signum out of the section to escape Elise, or was it to allow Elise to escape Signum...

“Scrya, I am fully capable of walking on my own so there is no need to push me. Also I will not attempt to injure that lady so you do not need to fear that.” Signum said once they were out of the section and alone again in the corridor.

“My thanks for this information, I will endeavor to return this favor to you as soon as possible.” Signum said regretfully, duty had won over the hormones, and she had to study this information. Thoughts of Yuuno and herself in bed going over the finer points of the book...
Shaking her head to clear them of such thought, virtually sprinted out of the library after a hasty farewell.

Yuuno's thoughts as he watch Signum leave was 'wow, she has a nice behind' as he stood entranced at the disappearing figure.

Neither of them got much work done that day.

Not sure of the direction I want to go with this, ah well, let's see how it goes.

I suppose that I must have been one of those weird teenage girls who never fretted or obsessed about dates and such , so I found it a bit overly dramatic. Nanoha has always seemed like a pretty level-headed girl, and indeed her only squeally moments were done for humour in the show, so I found this a little OOC.

The Nanoha and Miyuki interaction was great though, I loved Miyuki's bantering and yet her total support for her sister.

Hmm, you know, I did a little thinking after reading these two comments. To be fair, if it was a NanoFate fic, I probably would have found Nanoha's reaction to be funny (double-standard, I know ). Even so, I'd only think that her over-reaction would work if the fic was a fluff comedy, so those exaggerated emotions aren't meant to be taken seriously.

Nothing wrong if this fic was trying to be serious, but I'm just saying that in my opinion, if it was, then Nanoha's characterization didn't feel right to me .

It wasn’t the noise itself that spooked him, no. What terrified him was the possibility that what he would hear next was the phrase that would shatter him forever:

“We regret to inform you that your wife has been killed in the line of duty.”

It was something he never wished to hear, but understood that the chances weren’t zero that he would. As one of the top Enforcers in the Bureau, Fate was assigned advanced cases unfit for the lower ranks, meaning the danger was considerably higher. Even though she was highly skilled and fully capable of doing her job well, maybe some one would get in a lucky shot, maybe some one would catch her off guard, or maybe she would pay the price for saving some one.

All sorts of possible outcomes twisted around in Yuuno’s head, and it only served to worsen his anxiety. Even after being together for so many years, every time she walked out the door he was afraid she would never walk back in.

What would happen then? Would he be able to go on? He got through the death of one loved one, but that was only because Fate was there. If he lost her too, then what? He couldn’t bear the idea that their children would grow up without a mother.

Teana would be the one to break the news, Yuuno knew. Whenever her face appeared on his screen, his heart would effectively stop until she showed him that understanding smile that put him at ease. This was a recurring exchange, as Teana often called to speak with Alicia. The older twin idolized the carrot-topped Enforcer and loved talking with her.

On his end, Yuuno sometimes spoke with Teana’s husband and learned that Vice felt the same way. He dreaded that someday he’d have Fate on his doorstep with bad news, but maintained that it just comes with the territory. Being combat personnel means taking risks, and being married to them means you prepare yourself for the worst. It was just something they had to live with.

Unfortunately there wasn’t much else Yuuno could do about his morbid thoughts. Before he had suggested his wife finally accept the promotion she kept refusing, the one that would see her at a desk job, keeping her from the field and any potential danger. If Yuuno knew she was safe at headquarters, his mind would rest much easier, but Fate would have none of that.

Yuuno understood it. He understood why she needed to be out on the front, catching criminals and saving those in need. It was her calling to use the life given to her to help those in similar positions to the one she was in when she was a child. Her job was as much a part of her as her lovely golden locks.

That unfaltering drive, that strong sense of justice, that large, selfless heart were all things he loved about her, but still...

Sometimes it took such a toll on her. Yuuno had lost track of how many times she came home all bandaged up. Usually minor wounds, but there were a few close calls where a few centimetres had meant the difference between life and death. She considered them badges of honour when she succeeded and proof of shame when she failed.

Too often did he have to gather her into his arms as she wept, or whisper softly into her ear while she had a nightmare. She would be prompted to work even harder, bringing case files home and working on them into the wee hours of the morning. He would find her in her office, totally exhausted and sprawled out on her desk, before he picked her up and took her to bed.

If combat didn’t kill her, he feared the trauma and stress would.

But Fate was a strong woman and could hold herself together. Yuuno constantly reassured himself of this but a sliver of anxiety still remained. It would only disappear when he heard her, saw her, spoke with her, touched her. Having her come home or being there when he got home, safe and sound, were moments he was always grateful for.

The future was full of unknowns and things could change drastically at any moment. Yuuno knew this, and so he never missed an opportunity to kiss Fate goodbye, kiss her hello, and tell her that he loved her.

Considering that this fic was originally written for 00-Raiser's eyes only, OF COURSE Nanoha would be a bit out of character. I KNOW that Nanoha would NEVER forget her friends, including Yuuno. This is a "what if" story and was created to cheer Raiser up. The point I was trying to make was that if it wasn't for Yuuno, Nanoha would not be where she is today. Yuuno is the most important person in the series because he started it. If he had never excavated the Jewel Seeds, they would never have scattered and thus, Nanoha would still be in Uminari probably working in her family's Cafe (Hell! If it wasn't for Yuuno, there wouldn't be any NanoFate fics because Nanoha would never have met her).

So yes, Nanoha is most definitely out of character on purpose. And her outburst wasn't exactly a declaration. I won't say anything else because it would ruin the ending. But thank you for reading a leaving a comment.

Very nice . I really liked the moments when Yuuno thought about how Fate viewed herself getting injured, and how it would depend on whether her mission was a success or not (but for him the worry is the same regardless). The last 3 paragraphs were really great, it calls to the fears and worries outside of regular combat.

Hilarious morbid thought: Shouldn't Yuuno also fear some random TSAB Enforcer on the screen, because then it would mean a mission so nasty that both Fate and Teana were killed? *shot*

Something this made me think of...maybe the TSAB recruits so young because by the time their officers grow old enough to start families, they'd already have years of experience in the field so that they would be eligible for promotion to safer jobs? It would be a change from the "TSAB likes to use up its officers" idea?

Well, speaking for myself, my comments on over-reaction didn't really have anything to do with Nanoha forgetting Yuuno, just in how she was reacting. Nanoha has always seemed to me like someone who goes "Oh no, I forgot about ___ ....*pause*....I'm going to do something to make up for it right now!" . So I totally agree with you about the importance of Yuuno in Nanoha's life, and in the series even. My comments were just looking at Nanoha's reactions independent of what the issue actually was.

Of course, it's fine for her to be out of character if that's how you intended on writing her. The specific storyline or backstory you have in mind might completely justify her actions for all I know .

And her outburst wasn't exactly a declaration. I won't say anything else because it would ruin the ending.

I don't think it's too off base, as people often fail to notice what is right under thier nose, especially in foreign contexts. Since Nanoha's always thought of Yuuno as 'friend', it took her a bit to see him as a 'date.' Her resulting outburst could be from her being ashamed she overlooked a close friend (because you know how much she values her friends), coupled with horomones and the common teenage urge to be dramatic

And yeah, Yuuno is really important and I've written fics about that before. Always glad to see some one else acknowlegde him

Actually, it would probably be Shari who told him in that case. I was going to mention him being jumpy when either Shari or Teana called, but it wouldn't fit right with the tidbit that Alicia idolizes Teana. I guess I could have removed that tidbit, but I just wanted to establish that for the future.

Course I couldn't help but also establish that Teana and Vice are married in this timeline The fear for that couple would go both ways, though, since he's also combat personnel.

Really I've been plucking some plot ideas from Nora Roberts/JD Robb's In Death books, which are about a kick ass homicide cop and her billionaire husband in the future. A few of the books have dealt with cop killings, so she'll have to go inform the family. Her husband also has to deal with the nature of her job and what might happen to her. Doesn't help that she comes home bloody and bruised all the time

I honestly don't know. Even if it was intentional, it seems a little strange to me. Like DC said, Nanoha isn't the type to be over the top about any realization she has. She'd just accept it and set out to do what she has to do in her own quiet kind of way. I get the point you were trying to make, I just feel that the overall execution and feel of it could have been a little bit better and not quite as jarring, even if the OOC-ness was your intention. On top of that, in some ways.... maybe it's me, but the OOC-ness actually takes away from the realization of her feelings about Yuuno. It's just so over the top and strange that I can't find myself taking it seriously, so for me it kind of hurts the fic more than it helps.

Still a very nice read, though. ^^

No, it works great the way it is . I was just having a bit of (morbid) fun at the thought . The feeling comes through, and that's what's important, not the specifics of how anyone linked to Fate who calls Yuuno would get the man frightened for Fate.
