Character discussion - Battler

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place to discuss all things Battler related.
To keep the discussion enjoyable for all Umineko no Naku Koro ni fans, please follow the guidelines below and stay on-topic!

Note: Please don't use this for the specific episode / chapter / game talk, there are other threads for that stuff.

Thread Guidelines
  • No campaigning!
No "hate" or "xyz must die" posts. Discuss why you do or don't like characters without whining and whining or blatantly campaigning for your favorite.
  • Be polite to your fellow forum members.
Do not insult or harass other members for their likes and dislikes. Do not take it so seriously that you end up in an argument with another forum member because they express a fondness for a character you loathe. Discussion and good spirited banter is always welcome, but harassing people won't be tolerated.
  • Discuss, not Chat.
Please remember that AnimeSuki is a discussion forum, not a chat room, there is a difference. If you wish to chat, then please make use of our IRC channel (#animeuki) on ZiRC.
  • Have fun, but post intelligently.
It's great to have fun, but please try your best to add substance to what you post and make your thoughts interesting for the generation of fans that will follow after you’re long gone and on to watching some other series.
  • As the anime progresses, Please use spoiler tags!VN Spoilers are NOT allowed, except if they are used for comparison sake about events that have been already shown in the anime (or if the timing has been bypassed with no way to be disclosed later on). These must be enclosed in spoiler tags clearly marked with a proper title. Failure to do this can result in a BAN. Also please be sure to use spoiler tags for critical scenes from the Anime series with a proper title (like Episode X-Y) in order to not spoil people who didn't catch up the latest anime episodes yet.
  • Adding a Spoiler tag:
Just highlight your spoiler and click the button found
on the "Quick Reply" and "Reply to Thread" forms.
Make sure that you include a title for the spoiler!
  • Please use the Report button if you see any spoilers:
Click the button found to the left of the post, just under the poster's avatar.
Using the Report button is anonymous and helps the Moderators
to locate and deal with problems quickly.
  • Posting prohibited spoilers may result in a ban.
Note: Reporting a post does not mean the poster will be banned instantly.
The Moderators will use bans if warnings are repeatedly ignored.

Battler's a pretty unique name. I always wondered if it's pronounced Battl-er or Batt-ler.

The thing is that... if we consider how it is pronounced in Japanese, it is arguably not even close to the english pronunciation.
As a reminder, Battler's name is pronunced "Batora".

Despite how Western the names sound they're much different from what you would think.

Ma-ree-ah is pronouced Mar-e-ahh for example.

But anyways, I've always liked Battler. Despite his almost cliche perverted tendencies, he has a good head on his shoulders.

Battler is like a loose English translation of the kanji since the kanji can be translated as fighting man.

Battler's name is the most unusual in the whole family. In every other case the western names are recreated by using the phonetics of the kanji. but their meanings differ greatly from the original names meanings.

In the case of Battler it's the total opposite. There's no way you can read 戦人 as "Batora", but the meanings of these two Kanji are respectively: "war" and "person". So in this case it's the meaning that matter however you must use the english word "Battler" which then becomes "Batora" in the limited japanese pronounciation. Quite a mindfuck.

This is somewhat similar to Light Yagami from Death Note. His name is the Kanji of "moon", however you must read it as "light" (this isn't even a correct translation!), and then in japanese becomes "Raito".

Oh it must be so cool having to explain how to pronounce and write your name everytime...

I dunno why but Battler reminds me a bit of Sunohara from Clannad. Maybe because the first impression he gives is pervertedness.

Hmm... isn't Battler really like, some sort of homage to Naruhodou (Wright)?
Like for example, a certain character in Higurashi is to Ciel in Tsukihime?

You can't really base that idea off, because besides that one pose they don't really have similar traits...

well okay besides the odd hair

Here I thought I was the only one to make that connection when I first saw Battler. The pose did it for me, but yeah they are worlds apart personality wise.

He's a pretty cool guy though, even if he has a one track mind focused on breasts.

I would say there are MANY homages to Gyakuten Saiban in Umineko.

Heck, even this BGM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhMwqlK2rzA

Sure reminds me of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB0Fu7N-Zw0

Although I've never played Pheonix Wright games before (or even own a NDS..), I'm guessing it's safe to say that Umineko is superior? Or not...?

This reminded me more of Shirabe.

Eh, I wouldn't want to compare them. They are very different types of games, really. GS isn't really meant to be taken too seriously, it is just silly fun. And it has more gameplay elements to it, while Umineko of course is all about sitting back and watching it unfold, so the experiences are completely different. The GS games are masterpieces in their own way.

You can't compare them really. It's because Gyakuten Saiban builds it's cases on logic and real world rules...
Spoiler for spoiler on Phoenix Wright series:

Aanyway, you can't compare them really, and I'm a fan of both series.

Why would you care to state which one is superior? Phoenix Wright is a great game and most certainly inspired Ryukishi for his latest work.
