It seems like some anime that I have dont show subs like they used to while other files show subs on vlc. i have a mac and my vlc is up to date. it seems like more ppl are having this problem as well. any way to fix it or find an alternative.

so i fixed the problem it seems like i had to revert back to VLC 2.2.1 since 2.2.2 didnt display subs for some weird reason. probably an error on their part when making an update.

Glad you worked it out, Apple comrade. VLC just needs that initial TLC and I find it works quite nicely.
