Sailor Moon bishoujo designs from the later arcs are not that different from todays bishoujos like Nanoha and the like, so I don't expect much change in that respect.
I do think they need to upgrade their costumes and stuff though.

I think people are confusing "modernizing" with actually changing the art style. The former will just bring the series up to part to relatively modern productions, while the latter means literally getting an artist to redo the character designs. For this series, it's likely we'll get the former rather than the latter, unless they stick to the manga designs this time around...
And in all honesty, if they manage to give the transformations the same kind of sparkle and shine as what we're getting right now in Smile Precure (this season's MG show for Toei) then I don't think anyone will complain.

I have no complaints on K-ON!-like designs, but this picture didn't fit with the new series' mood at all, since I would like to see Toei keeping the same designs as the former ones with added modern elements.

An issue I've noticed since I'm rereading some Sailor Moon volumes is that Mamoru is younger in his manga counterpart (in the anime he starts as a university student while in the manga he is in high school). Not having a problem with age difference honestly but I think it's curious that they decided to make him older in the anime (well if I have to mention every single difference between anime and manga it would take ages).
Even if I already read the volumes a long time ago I'm still amazed about how fast things happen And why people hate Chibiusa? I really liked her Found this on youtube (fan made)

What I want is something akin to what Saint Seiya Omega has done... designs evocative of the originals but with a modern aesthetic. |

The Sailor Scouts' outfits are basically slightly stylized sailor-style school uniforms.
Those are still massively in style. Exhibit A. Exhibit B. So I'm not sure what really needs to be changed. Well, except that the sailor-style school outfit is now so frequently seen that Sailor Moon might actually look a bit plain (for a magical girl) without a touch more flash. Which is why I raised the possibility of her starting with one of her flashier skirts.

I think that since we got original touches on the live action versions of the Senshi (especially Moon) that it is likely the outfits will be basically the same with a few new touches. For reference in the liva action she has a slightly more ornate tiara, her red parts are now a pink color, her defauly brooch was switched for the S one in locket form and she had the hair clips, earings and choker dangly thing from the manga.

In style? Yes. Massively? Highly debatable, as more and more schools are using the blazer type uniform. Which is sad that they're declining in popularity, since IMO the serafuku is the trademark of joshikousei.

What I meant was that I just don't think the designs need that much of a change. It should and most likely will be updated to fit today's trends more so, but overall I don't think there needs to be a complete overhaul or a major costume redesign of any of the sailor senshi.
